Pacific Sunwear Scrambles For Rent Money

by The Editors on November 28, 2011

Pacsun LogoThe New York Post is saying that things at action mall retailer PacSun aren’t going as well as many at the company would like.

“Dude — if you can front us some dough to help cover the rent now, there will be a sweet payoff later.”
That, in essence, is the deal that surf-and-skate retailer Pacific Sunwear of California has been floating with private-equity investors as it scrambles for cash to pay the punishing leases for its struggling, mall-based shops. . . In addition to shuttering dozens of its more than 800 stores this year and haggling with landlords for lower rents, PacSun recently hired Los Angeles investment bank Guggenheim Partners to raise cash, sources told The Post.

Sadder news still is that it seems few investors are interested in chaining themselves to the PacSun anchor. Looks like it won’t be long now.

Montreal Moves The Big O

by The Editors on November 28, 2011

Bigo620

For those of us who live in a country that seems to go out its way on a regular basis to destroy skate spots it was nice to see that the Montreal Impact was able to move the entire structure to a new location, according to a post on Impact Montreal.

The 175-ton concrete structure known as the Big-O is an historic monument that was built in 1976 for the Montreal Olympic Games. It became a symbol for the international skateboarding community. . . The structure was moved 25 meters and will keep the same incline at its new location. . . “We understood when we first build the stadium that the Big-O was a huge deal to the skateboarders,” said Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo. “When we decided to expand the stadium, we had no choice but to put a big column in its location. We needed to move it to save it. Everyone in the project was pretty confident it could be done.”

Amazing what can be done when people take skateboarding seriously.

Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing: Flat To Fat

by The Editors on November 28, 2011

Pancho64

After weeks of flat and mostly small surf for the first jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, surfers got a faste of North Shore juice as the $250,000 Vans World Cup of Surfing kicked off its first day of competition yesterday (November 27, 2011) at Sunset Beach in 10 to 12 foot surf. Pancho Sullivan explains:

“Every time you think you’ve got this wave figured out, it humbles you,” said Sullivan, 38. “It takes a lot of time and dedication to the break and your equipment, to surf well here. The adrenaline you get as you come towards the inside bowl, the wave is warbling and you just have no idea what it’s going to do. I think that’s why we all surf: that excitement of the unknown. Sunset delivers that on all levels. It is a tough wave.

Today, Sunny Garcia will face off against women’s ASP World Champion and Vans Triple Crown wildcard Carissa Moore. For the official word, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Billabong Stock Takes A Mystery Dive

by The Editors on November 25, 2011

Billabong Logo-1When shares of Billabong dropped 12.5 percent on Thanksgiving Day everyone was a bit surprised. In fact, the company has no explanation for it at all, according to a story in the Herald Sun.

The unexpected surge in trading volumes on Thursday prompted the Australian Securities Exchange to write to Billabong, asking the company if it had any undeclared information that could explain the activity. . . Billabong responded yesterday by saying it was not aware of any information significant to the company that had not been announced.

The sell off (which was reportedly the busiest trading day since August) saw 9.26 million shares traded and the Billabong stock to $3.64. Taj Burrow winning a contest didn’t scare people that much did it?
