Jim Rippey’s Conversion Story

by The Editors on November 25, 2011

Bilde-1-3For all his snowboarding feats of daring, we’ll always remember Jim Rippey for being the first guy to do a flip on a snowmobile and then immediately credit the Lord Jesus Christ. But that was then, now Rippey is an associate pastor at Grace Church in Reno, Nevada and, according to a story in the Sierra Sun, he doesn’t miss the pro shred life at all.

“I felt like the Lord spoke to my heart,” said Rippey, a Truckee resident who was working in the Tahoe backcountry with Standard Films at the time of his decision. . . “There were these younger kids who were trying to film some lines, and I was sitting there watching them and I remember the Lord spoke to my heart and said, ‘Jim, you’ve been there, you’ve done that and you’ve done it at the highest level, and now it’s time to let go of it. I’ve got something else for you to do.’ . . . “And I was just like, ‘Wow, OK.’”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Rippey has gone in on his new life just has hard as he did his old. All we can say is, amen, bro.

Penny Skateboards Goes Big With The Nickel

by The Editors on November 25, 2011

Penny Nickel All

Just in time for Christmas Penny Skateboards, the company behind the popular fantastic plastic skateboards, is launching a new 27 inch board for those looking for a little more size. It’s called the Nickel.

“Everything about the Nickel is impressive” says Nick Timms of Penny USA. “Our fans have been pleading with us for a year now to bring them a larger plastic board that was more stable that they could ride. Structurally, we weren’t even sure it could be done without compromising the ride that was uniquely Penny… but, as usual, our team has managed to produce another industry first. Our fans are going to be impressed.”

The board is 7.5 inches wide and features custom 4-inch Penny trucks, 59mm 78A “super smooth” Penny wheels and Penny ABEC 3 bearings. Click here to find a shop that carries Penny, or follow the jump for the official details. [click to continue…]

Never Summer In Entrepreneur Magazine

by The Editors on November 25, 2011

Never-Summer-Tracey-Canaday-Shredded

Never Summer Snowboards have always been outliers in the snowboard industry. And they’ve always seemed to like that. But in this profile in Entrepreneur Magazine we get the back story how they became one of snowboarding’s biggest little brands and how they reportedly “Shredded The Snowboard Industry With Innovation” while building boards in the USA.

It all started, appropriately enough, in a garage. The brothers, who lived in Fort Collins, launched Swift Snowboards with their friend Scott Rolfs out of their home in 1983, a year after they were introduced to the sport. Tim Canaday, just 14 at the time, and four years Tracey’s junior, built the first snowboard in his wood shop class. “Tracey and Scott were figuring out the business, and I was good at building things, so I gave them advice on how to build a mold that I just learned from my shop teacher,” he says.

Taj Burrow Wins Reef Hawaiian Pro

by The Editors on November 24, 2011

After a terrible start the first jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing the Reef Hawaiian Pro finished off on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 with some overhead waves and a win for Taj Burrow.

“I had a good run, it feels good scoring in the 9-point range and it’s hard to do,” said Taj, world #3. “I just really wanted to win an event here. I am really happy. . . It’s funny I have never really gotten a good shot (at the Vans Triple Crown). I was thinking, maybe I should really have a go at one of these things so I actually have it right in the front of my mind.

It would be great for Burrow to win something, right? He edged Adam Melling, Adriano De Souza, and Nat Young in the final. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]

Reef Hawaiian Pro Finally Begins Today

by The Editors on November 21, 2011

Parko 09-640X360

For better or worse the 2011 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is kicking off today with the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa. Currently, the waves are rolling in at two feet, but the surf is set to build through the day and deliver enough waves to finish the contest in three days. Overall, however, it’s looking like one of the worst years ever.

“In the 29-year history of running the Vans Triple Crown, we’ve never gone this far without running one competitive day,” says Randy Rarick, Executive Director of the Series. “But we knew it was possible, given it’s a La Nina year. We saw a similar pattern last year, but this year La Nina is more strengthened. This is precisely why we have a 12-day window. Without it, the event would not have been able to start.”

Slater vs. Webber In A Wave Pool Duel

by The Editors on November 21, 2011

Kelly Slater may be moving forward with his circular wave pool idea, but the Kelly Slater Wave Company has hit a flat spell when it comes to protecting its intellectual property thanks to an extremely similar patented registered by Greg Webber and Webber Wave Poosl, according to a Stu Nettle story on Swellnet.com.au.

Since applying for a patent in 2008 Kelly Slater and his business partner, Adam Fincham, have twice been rejected because their wave pool infringes upon Greg Webber’s design. In both of their attempts – first in 2008 then again this year – the response from examiners at the US Patent Office has been identical: the design submitted by the Kelly Slater Wave Company is “unpatentable over Webber.” It is too similar to Greg Webber’s design for a patent to be granted.
