Northwest Skateboard vs. Gun Showdown

by The Editors on August 29, 2012

Two skateboarders were arrested August 24, 2012 in Everett, Washington for skateboarding where skateboarding is not allowed. The best part of the story is the write-up the event got in the police report, according to a story on Heraldnet.com. Here’s how the overzealous, pistol-waving bicycle cop described the interaction:

The officer grabs his bicycle, and the chase is on. While additional officers converge on the area, the officer catches the boarders. Surprisingly, they refuse to comply with his order to stop and a struggle is on. The officer takes one boarder to the ground, but looks up as the second pulls his board back to use as a bat. The officer transitions to his sidearm, and it is a skateboard versus gun standoff. Supporting officers arrive and immediately assist the second boarder to the ground.

Always be cautious when an officer “transitions to his sidearm.” As for the skaters, they’re “in county lock for investigation of obstruction.”

Quiksilver/Rhone Circling Billabong?

by The Editors on August 29, 2012

Quik Logo10Australia’s Business Spectator is raising the bar on Billabong takeover speculation by suggesting that Rhone Group, the private equity firm that owns 20 percent of Quiksilver, may or could be looking to snatch up Billabong if the price is right.

While it’s not clear whether Quiksilver or Rhone, a New York-based private equity firm, is eyeing the situation, it’s fair to say it’s likely to be Rhone who has the final say on any move given Quiksilver’s history of debt issues and market value of $US513 million — below Billabong’s at about $650m.

Guess using the words “could” and “might be” allow the press to say pretty much anything they want. We can’t really imagine a scenario where Quiksilver’s problems could be solved by adding Billabong’s to their list. We’d like to think Quik learned their lesson with Rossignol.

Hurricane Isaac Claims A Surfer

by The Editors on August 29, 2012

Yesterday, (August 28, 2012) a 50-year-old surfer riding waves created by Hurricane Isaac drowned after getting caught in a rip current near Packery Channel in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to a story in KIIItv.com.

Nearby surfers were able to pull him to shore and start CPR. Paramedics got to the scene minutes later. Unfortunately, the man did later die at the hospital. . . “There is a very strong current out there right now,” said Timothy Netek with the Corpus Christi Fire Department. “As you can tell, even the surfers are taking it very cautiously. Anybody without a lot of experience in this water should avoid it at this time.”

Our thoughts are with the surfer’s family and friends.

The Penny Organic Crop Is Ripe

by The Editors on August 29, 2012

Penny Organic (the boards we saw at Agenda NYC) are going nation wide on September 1, 2012. These plastic fantastic decks, which feature an ingredient that makes them completely biodegradable, will come in a slew of new color ways.

Penny Founder Ben Mackay said, “We’re continually trying to raise the bar with our products and the Penny Organic range is no different. We’ve put a lot of time and energy into making sure the boards ride well, are durable, and of course look good. Every Organic Skateboard comes wrapped in a custom burlap tote bag that perfectly complements the range. The result is a product that really challenges just what truly is possible with plastic skateboards”.

Ray Barbee Goes Crosstown With Spy

by The Editors on August 29, 2012

Raybarbee-Benclark

Spy announced today (August 29, 2012) that they have signed legendary skateboarder and musician Ray Barbee as an ambassador for their Crosstown Collection of handmade acetate sunglasses.

“Very few people possess a truly infectious persona like Ray, and I really appreciate his point of view on life,” says SPY President and CEO Michael Marckx. “Ray’s parts in the Powell Peralta videos, Public Domain and Ban This, allow him to easily carry the weight of the title icon, but it’s his open and innovative approach to everything he does that makes him a standout, whether its behind his camera, in front of his Fender or on his board. Beyond his skate style, I happen to be a really big fan of his music, which makes this such a fun connection for me, and SPY.”

We agree. For the official word from Spy, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

The Street League’s Backward Truck

by The Editors on August 28, 2012

Nyjah-Hustonopps

Nyjah Huston and the other seven Street League Champions skated their asses off during the finals and all that comes to nothing because the truck on the trophy skateboard is backward. Not surprisingly, the independent skateboard media was quick to pick up on this. You Will Soon says:

Considering a trophy is a symbol of a competition’s ultimate achievement, I find it quite fitting that the championship trophy for Street League is one of the biggest, most embarrassing blunders you can make in skateboarding.

Even Skate & Annoy weighed in:

The backwards truck phenomenon happens all the time when marketers attempt to use skateboards without consulting an actual skateboarder. How did it apparently happen to Rob Dyrdek’s Street League Skateboarding, an organization dedicated to presenting “real” skateboarding?

You know as Rob Dyrdek watched Nyjah hold that trophy up all he could see was that truck, backwards. Look at his face. Guess this is just one of the downsides of having “people” that handle things for you.
