Anastasia Ashley: Woman At Twerk

by The Editors on August 9, 2013

We don’t know who is really to blame for the global, viral spread of Anastasia Ashley’s butt cheeks Supergirl warm up routine, but we do have questions. Are these just the antics of a serious surfer girl who doesn’t care? Is this the calculated creation of a marketing wizard who knows exactly how to twerk it? Is obese America this hard up for toned ass? Occasionally, there are no answers.

Spy: Sales Up, Losses Down

by The Editors on August 7, 2013

spy_logo-tm.jpgSpy finished off another quarter of increased sales and lower losses as they logged $19 million in sales for the first half of 2013, according to financials released today, August 7, 2013.

“We are really happy to have achieved our 9th consecutive quarter of year over year growth of SPY® brand products, with strong SPY® brand sales growth of 10% in the first half of 2013 over the first half of 2012, and the first half of 2013 was 29% higher than the first half of 2011,” said Michael Marckx, President and CEO. “Moving forward, our Happy Lens Collection is expanding to include a growing list of new styles and will be featured in our Rx, Performance and Goggle Collections, which will further leverage this innovation in many ways. On top of our successful Happy Lens launch, we are even more pleased with the combination of things we accomplished this half: solid sales growth, improved gross margins, lower operating expenses, positive cash flow from operations and income from operations. We believe this solid first half of the year helps to position us well for the balance of 2013.”

Unfortunately, the company is still not out of the red yet. Spy lost $1.3 million in the first half of 2013, down from $4.2 million in the same period of 2012. For the official word from Spy, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

olloclip, makers of our favorite fisheye wide angle lens adapter for the iPhone 4s & 5, announced today that they are moving iPhone photographers 2x closer (and giving them some depth of field) with the release of their new telephoto lens.

The olloclip telephoto lens is especially valuable for the serious photographer seeking to achieve certain effects and more professional results. In addition to getting you twice as close to your subject, the lens provides a more creative depth of field so you can use selective focus to make your subjects stand out distinctly from their backgrounds (especially useful when the background is cluttered or distracting).

The telephoto also comes with a circular polarizing lens to allow for light and color adjustments on the fly. The telephoto lens package sells for $99.99 and is available for pre-order on July 30, 2013. The wide angle costs $69.99. Both are well worth the price. Chart 072913

The Snow Industries of America just released their 2013 Participant Study and as you might have guessed the numbers were down for pretty much everyone but those free heelers. Yeah, we see that bump in “freeski” but come on, that’s just skiing. We all know that.

Ultimately, overall snow sports participation was down 3% to 19.3M participants across all disciplines; alpine ski had a 19% drop in participation but still brought the most to the mountain with 8.2M, followed by snowboard with 7.4M, freeski with 5.4M, snowshoe with 4M, cross country with 3.3 million and telemark with 2.8M participants.

Kids Start “Riot” Following The Vans US Open

by The Editors on July 29, 2013

The streets of downtown Huntington Beach, California got a little out of control Sunday night (July 28, 2013) after the conclusion of the Vans US Open of Surfing. It seems some suburban SoCal kids were upset at a row of porta potties and they released some of their middle class rage by knocking them over.

According to a story in the LA Times eight people were arrested in a “riot” which reportedly started when someone threw a ketchup bottle into the street from an upstairs restaurant.

Eight people were arrested and several officers were injured Sunday night. Police in riot gear used tear gas and nonlethal rounds to disperse the crowd, which tipped over portable toilets and smashed storefront windows.

While “windows” plural is reportedly a bit of a stretch there was some damage to a few newspaper racks, signs, and at least one car window. It’s hard to really “riot” when you’ve got one hand on your cellphone and you’re trying to get it all on instagram.

After a week of marginal surf the 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing wrapped up with Alejo Muniz and Kolohe Andino (two of the lightest guys on tour) battling it out for the title. But Muniz got the upper hand early in the tiny surf and took it 16.23 to Andino’s 14.54.

“I’m so happy, I can’t believe it,” Muniz said. “Today marks the four-year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing and I’d like to dedicate this win to him. This is the biggest win of my career and it’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever surfed in front of. I knew I had to get scores and the waves were dying a little bit with the high tide and the ocean really cooperated with me today.”
