Verizon Has A New Daily Habit

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

Vzw Logo 1024Verizon Wireless has signed on as title sponsor of Fuel TV’s Daily Habit according to a press release.

Aside from “branding in all show graphics, as well as online banners and a unique brand page on the FUEL TV website” the company is also buying lots of coverage for their athletes.

Many of Verizon Wireless’ sponsored athletes will appear on “The Daily Habit,” including surfer, musician, and “Drive Thru” star Donavon Frankenreiter; surfer and “New Pollution” host Matt Beacham; surfer Sterling Spencer; freestyle motocross rider and three-time X Games Gold Medalist Kyle Loza, six-time X Games Medalist Todd Potter; three-time X Games Silver Medalist and 2008 Red Bull X-Fighters Series champion Mat Rebeaud; legendary skateboarder Omar Hassan; two-time X Games Gold Medalist and three-time AST Dew Tour winner BMX pro Daniel Dhers, and others.

We’re having a hard time getting used to the new face of sponsored editorial, but it looks like it’s here to stay.

Are Frends Electric? They Are Now

by The Editors on January 25, 2010

Frends-Lifestyle

Seems like the Frends logo has been everywhere lately. On the snowboards of Mason Aguirre, Luke Mitrani, Danny Davis, Kevin Pearce and on some get well signs we’ve seen at the bottom of the pipe lately. Now, the whole Frends crew is beginning to make sense. Frends today announced the roll out of a line of six styles of electronic accessories that look amazing.

Our products are inspired, designed, engineered, field-tested and built to meet the same parameters we have for each other. Just like our friends, we want our gear to be strong, reliable, original, fun, dependable, and interesting. Frends has taken the time to build our gear from the ground up using our crew as the inspiration. For us attention to detail isn’t just a slogan we saw on one of those inspiration posters with a bald eagle carrying a baby goat in its talons into the sunset—we actually mean it.

The music listening devices will be available this spring and will retail from $33 to $88. Knowing the people behind the business end of Frends we’re guessing this could be pretty huge. Follow the jump for photos of the first three products off the line.

Tonyhawktricks

Tony Hawk: Trick Tips, an iPhone app that we haven’t even checked out yet, is reportedly the number one spot in Top Paid Sports on the iTunes App Store, according to a recent press release.

Hawk has been hailed for his creative online interaction with his fan base and this week reached a Twitter following of over 2 million. . . . “I am thrilled to be able to reach both new riders and loyal fans with these new apps. While I wish I could personally teach everyone who wants to learn. But for now, this is the next best thing,” Hawk said.

Wonder if people think this app will help them play Tony Hawk Ride?

RealSki Augmented Reality Shows The Way

by The Editors on December 31, 2009

Ever been lost at a new resort? Those days could be over with the RealSki augmented reality app for the Apple iPhone. This heads up display shows run names, points of interest, and will hopefully help oblivious skiers stay away from the snowboard parks.

REALSKITM utilizes the camera, compass, GPS, and other 3GS features to overlay ski runs and key points of interest in augmented reality. . . Version 1.1 includes demo maps for five resorts and offers more than 80 mountains in North America from which to choose.

Sounds great for getting around the mountain, not so good for oblivious visitors who already seem to have enough distractions. The app works only on iPhone 3GS and is currently free in the iTunes store.

Boardistan Announces Plans For Tablet Device

by The Editors on December 21, 2009

Bstan Tablet

Boardistan is thrilled to be the first action sports brand to announce its plans for a full compliment of content features built especially for the upcoming Apple tablet device if and when it is finally available to the public.

“When Steve Jobs announces his Jesus Tablet we will be ready,” The Publisher of Boardistan said in a press release. “Our editors have been working with our design team for months testing and analyzing the way users interact with our content. After compiling the data we have chosen to implement an amazing technology called WordPress 2.9. This open-source content management system will allow us to digitally distribute our surf, snow, and skate content on all tablet devices through a revolutionary application called “a web browser.” This, coupled with the tablet’s portability, will allow Boardistan.com users to view our content absolutely free whenever and wherever they choose.”

The all-new Tablet platform will also allow users to interact with the content by adding their own comments to posts, but more importantly, users will be able to search Boardistan’s 10 years of action sports content for their favorite brands, riders, and topics and then share this information through social media apps like Twitter, Facebook, and even email.

“We really do believe this is the future of media and we are just ecstatic to be including our users in our cutting-edge plans for the digital future,” The Publisher said. “Being first isn’t new to us, but it never seems to lose its thrill.”

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we near the Apple Tablet’s pending launch.

Rick Alden: Entrepreneur Of The Year

by The Editors on December 17, 2009

Sia09-118Entrepreneur Magazine has named Skullcandy founder and CEO Rick Alden their Entrepreneur of 2009 based on reader voting online.

Inspiration hit Rick Alden on a chairlift, during a snowboarding trip in 2001. The iPod had just been introduced, but none of the headphones were designed to appeal to the iPod-toting action-sports crowd. It was time to change the game. . . Alden, now 45, is riding high. 2008 revenue topped $86 million, and 2009 was expected to reach $120 million.

It seems like months ago, but we think we voted for Rick. You’re welcome.

Burton Going Crazy On Web Presents

by The Editors on December 17, 2009

Burton Webps

Burton is going all in on their current Web Presents promotion and it’s worth checking out simply for the voyeuristic spectacle of the whole thing. It started on December 15, 2009 but we just got over to check it out.

The whole thing reminds us a little of the old JenniCam Show popular in the late 90s because it proves just how much we all love watching normal people do stuff no matter how boring it is.

Then again $1,000 shopping sprees to the “next person to walk into the NYC Burton store with a orange tank top on and say the words ‘cold room'” can be compelling content.

ThawkrideThe NPD Group, “the leading provider of reliable and comprehensive consumer and retail information” has reported that Tony Hawk: Ride has sold 114,000 copies during the month of November, according to a story on G4TV.com.

The Game sells for $119.99 and was released on November 17, 2009. For those not so good at math, that means $13,678,860 in sales in two weeks. Looks like Tony’s media roadshow paid off quite nicely, even if the critics are getting Tony down.

Tony Hawk: Slide In Rankings

by The Editors on December 2, 2009

500X Tonygamer

Using GameRankings.com scores, Gamespy has listed up the overall reviews of Tony Hawk skateboard video game products since THPS and it doesn’t look pretty. We don’t think a week is enough time to really get a good idea of how Tony Hawk: Ride is checking with players, but a look back doesn’t appear to give it much hope.
