The Newport Beach Film Festival will be hosting the world premiere of Opper Films’ Secrets of Desert Point, a film that documents the discovery, evolution and exploitation of a legendary surf break in remote Indonesia almost 40 years ago. Here’s the pitch:
In the early eighties, while sailing off remote Lombok Island in Indonesia, young California surfer Bill Heick and his friends (dubbed the “Golden Beards”) stumbled across the perfect wave…a pristine barreling left reeling endlessly and empty over a shallow, live-coral reef. As treacherous as it was beautiful, it was later dubbed “Desert Point” for its dry forbidding nature. In the years that followed, a pioneer crew of hardcore surfers set up a makeshift beach outpost and kept their treasure off the surf-media map for almost a decade. Their mission: to surf uncrowded Desert Point at the highest level possible…no matter the cost. . . But Paradise, they quickly found, came at a price.

Mammoth has always wanted to be Aspen. And now, it appears their wish has finally come true. Two days after picking up Intrawest for a reported $1.5 billion, the Denver, Colorado based Aspen Skiing Co./KSL partnership has picked up Mammoth, June, Snow Summit, and Bear Mountain for an undisclosed sum according to a Jason Blevins story in the Denver Post.
Rusty Gregory, the longtime manager and chief executive of Mammoth Resorts, in a statement called the move “the next logical chapter in the story of Mammoth. . . This new platform, built around a collective passion for the mountains and our commitment to the people who visit, work and live there, is exactly what the ski resort business needs.
We’re not sure that having every single resort in the USA owned by two companies is exactly what the ski resort business needs, but we’re pretty certain it won’t change much for the average shred. That Aspen leaf in the logo always did look like two tusks and a trunk to us anyway.

Resort consolidation ratchets up a notch as Aspen Skiing Co. and private equity firm KSL Capital Partners have paid a reported $1.5 billion for Intrawest. In the deal Aspen/KSL picks up Steamboat, Winter Park, Tremblant, Stratton, Snowshoe, Blue Mountain and (through partnership with KSL) Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, according to a story in the Denver Post.
Intrawest once ruled the resort real estate game, but has fallen on hard times recently. Guess, this is as good a deal as they could have hoped for and as far as we can tell it rarely matter who owns the resorts we ride. Mountains are mountains.

The story of Jeremy Fish, his wife Jayde and how they’re ruling the San Francisco art scene is spelled out in the SF Weekly and it’s worth a gander. Check it:
Both Jeremy and Jayde have achieved celebrity status within the fringes of the established art community for some time, and Jeremy has become a cult figure in the skating industry for his tripped-out line work, often depicting tiny, somewhat morbid, pink bunnies. The image originated from the calling card of a skateboarding crew he created in the ’90s: The Silly Pink Bunnies.

These are the stories we hate. On April 7, 2017 at around 7:30 PM 15-year-old Sandro McIlroy of Manhattan Beach, California grabbed onto the side of a moving Jeep while riding a skateboard, according to as story on 6ABC.com. The car was rolling at about 10 MPH and as we’ve learned accidents while skateboard towing rarely ends well.
At some point, the boy lost control of the skateboard, which caused him to hit the outer rear tire of the Jeep. He then fell, hitting his head on the roadway. . . Police and emergency personnel arrived and took the teen to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Our thoughts are with McIlroy’s friends and family.
