Did you miss us? Our Internet service provider had some trouble providing Internet service today and our site ended up down all day.
We send out a hearty “thanks guy” to Covad Communications Group. It only took their crack team of technicians seven hours to get their network back up. Amazing work.

To launch their new “alternative sports” title Shaun White Snowboarding French Game-maker Ubisoft will spend $10 million in what Mediaweek is calling “nontraditional media buys” in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 16 game launch.
Anyone watching South Park’s first two episodes will find the game nearly impossible to miss. For the series premiere Oct. 8, Ubisoft bought out all of the ad inventory and will run three separate two-minute spots for its flagship Shaun White Snowboarding, Prince of Persia and Farcry 2 titles. The second episode will feature only ads for Shaun White Snowboarding.
They also have a string of appearances on ESPN’s shows all day on November 16 because what’s good for Shaun White is good for the X Games. Let just say this: we think Ubisoft is being tragically optimistic about how many copies of this game they’re going to sell.

Whenever we hear about things like someone skateboarding around the world, or across the country we always have the same question: who would actually do something like that?
Then we see picture of the guy and usually it all makes sense.
Take New Zealander Rob Thomson for example. He has “skateboarded” 12,000 kilometers across three continents in the past 462 days and from his photo he looks like just the kind of guy who would do something like that. Doesn’t he? Wooo hoooo! Yeeeooow! Uuuh Huuh! That’s right!
Asked why he had undertaken the journey, Thomson said: “I struggle with that question sometimes as well.”. . . But the main reason was that he had wanted to push himself. “I took a couple of years of my life to put myself outside of my comfort zone,” he told National Radio. “I’ll take something away from that in my life to come to just keep trying to learn, to keep making sure I push myself past my comfort zone and continue to learn.”
That fact that he wasn’t doing it to raise money for charity makes it a little better, but come on.

It’s difficult to take this kind of event seriously in light of the new Bill Maher film Religulous, however, we know surfing is a religion so why shouldn’t a bunch of priests wear robes down to the beach in Huntington and hold a ceremony in surf dude speak?
The occasion was the Blessing of the Waves, a spiritual — but at the same time decidedly lighthearted — event organized by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. . . . One of the event’s organizers, Father Christian Mondor, helped kick off the proceedings by thanking God (or “The Big Kahuna,” as he also addressed him) for righteous waves and a killer ride for all the surfer babes and dudes assembled before him.
It’s always kind of sad when religion panders for popularity, isn’t it?

These are the kinds of stories we don’t really think about all that much as we don’t obsessively follow pro ball sports like most industry marketing and sales dudes (they need something to talk about while sniffing each others asses).
Leo Maxam of the San Jose Mercury News wonders: with Kelly Slater’s 9th world title is he now officially in the running as the “most dominant athlete” in the world?
The “most dominant athlete” debate is a regular item on the agenda inside sports bars and on ESPN. The discussion invariably includes a small handful of usual suspects like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong and now Michael Phelps.
Truthfully, we couldn’t care less. If you do, click the link.

Surfer Dave Carr, 40, had the pleasure of landing Volusia County Florida’s world record breaking shark attack as he was hit by a three foot shark while surfing at Bethune Beach on Sunday, October 5, 2008.
David Logan, a 44-year-old surfer from Jupiter, was initially thought to have been on the receiving end of the bite that broke the 2001 record of 22 bites in a single year. Since Logan was bitten shortly after noon Sunday, a good hour after Carr was bitten, he’s the latest victim.
Phew, would hate to have that honor go to the wrong guy. The bar is now raised to 24 and we still have three months to go.

We rolled by the Etnies Skateboard Park in Lake Forest, CA on Saturday afternoon to check out the festivities. Early on it looked like the weather was going to shut the entire 2008 Etnies GVR contest as rain totally slicked out the park only moments before the official start. The crowd ran for cover, but they didn’t leave.
After some deft squeegee and leaf blowers work the skatepark crew got the entire street course dried up and back in action.
It was a great Saturday in the park. Bad Religion brought back all kinds of memories while Hyper Crush made us think back to the future.
