Oded Shakked: The Surfing Winemaker

by The Editors on October 29, 2008

Guess that’s a better title that “The Surfing Wino,” though some of the greatest surfboard shapers in history may tend to disagree. Oded Shakked is the winemaker behind Healdsburg’s Longboard Vineyards and this is his story. One side note: Oked’s last name is apparently pronounced Sha-KED, and not as we’d hoped: Shacked!

Quiksilver Runs For The Hills

by The Editors on October 29, 2008

Frankie

We’d probably be more embarrassed that anything, but Quiksilver would like everyone to know that several of the stars of MTV’s The Hills enjoy wearing Quiksilver duds on the show.

Doug Reinhart, Brody Jenner and Frankie Delgado are fans of Quiksilver – Fact! . . . Check them rocking Quik on MTV’s hit show “The Hill’s”. Full episodes online here!! . . . Snag your own Quik gear online at Quiksilver.com or stop in a Quiksilver Store near you!

Ah, we’re kind of thinking this might be a great reason not to wear the stuff. Then again if we paid that much money getting our clothing on MTV we’d probably have to pimp it all to hell, too.

The Green Cowboy Teaching College?

by The Editors on October 29, 2008

Ruhter

He’s come a long way since the days of South Shore debauchery, and now Forum staff photographer Ian Ruhter is giving lectures. On Saturday, October 25. 2008 Ian along with photographer Chris Wellhausen and cinematographer Kyle Schwartz spoke to students and snowboard fans at the Lake Tahoe Community College.

The night began with an Artist reception with Fine Art prints on display, and concluded with a visual presentation by each artist on a 20 x 30 foot screen in the Duke Theater. Ian broke down to the audience his philosophies of Art and how he maintains that integrity principle when managing large advertising campaigns.

We’re proud of Ian. Nice work. Almost makes us tear up a little. . .

Mike V x The Anaheim Ducks?

by The Editors on October 28, 2008

081028 Wire-MikevhMike Vallely has apparently partnered with the Anaheim Ducks on a “co-branded apparel line” to be sold at the Anaheim Ducks Team Store, according to a press release on EXPN.com.

In my mind hockey is the original action sport,” said Mike V, a Ducks season ticket holder “Before the fame of action sports, hockey players were generally regarded as the toughest and craziest athletes on the planet. I think they still are. Of all the traditional and action sports, hockey and skateboarding are the only ones that are truly compatible.

Hey, whatever helps him rationalize this one is fine by us (not to say we’re not laughing), but we always thought he kinda disliked jocks.

Billabong Up On Weak Australian Dollar

by The Editors on October 28, 2008

Derek O’Neill, CEO at Billabong, told investors that the falling Australian dollar is great for company profits, according to a story in The Australian.

There has been a dramatic fall in the value of the Australian dollar, in particular against the US dollar and the euro,” Mr O’Neill said. “After so many years of watching the company’s reported profits eroded by an appreciating Australian dollar, there is now the prospect of strong reported gains from a depreciating Australian dollar.” . . . Every 1c movement from these assumed exchange rates meant a 0.6 per cent change in profit for Billabong, Mr O’Neill said.

And that must make Paul Naude very, very happy.

Resorts Say No Burton Love For Employees

by The Editors on October 28, 2008

Burton ProtestSmuggler’s Notch, and Vail Resorts (Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Heavenly) have joined the protest and banned Burton’s Love and Primo boards for use while employees are on duty.

Vail-owned areas prohibit employees from using the Love boards, or any other inappropriate, offensive or suggestive equipment while on duty, said Amy Kemp, senior corporate communications manager for the company.

Guess that’s means no Playboy bunnies in the snowboard school lineup.

Laird Hamilton’s Big, Strong, Handsome Book

by The Editors on October 28, 2008

Hamilton BookIt’s being described as the first book by the best big wave surfer in the world. Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul (And, of Course, Surfing) is Laird Hamilton’s story on everything. It’s a how-to for life:

It’s not about chasing trophies or accolades or cash. It’s about quality over quantity and being true to your physical, mental, and spiritual roots. Not only is it possible to thrive in the modern world without adopting its harmful habits: it’s essential. And not only has Hamilton mastered this balance, he makes a compelling and articulate case that anyone who wants to can do the same.

If he can tell us how to get paid for everything (And, of Course, taking a dump) then we are so in. Click the link to by the book right now!
