Billabong Profit Drop Rumors?

by The Editors on May 14, 2009

Billabong-LogBillabong’s stock went into a trading halt soon after the market opened yesterday, according to Australia’s the Age and now analysts are stuck trying to figure out exactly what that means.

You’ve got two choices,” one analyst said. “A capital raising for who-knows-why, or a profit downgrade. Or if you want to be really, really wild, how about an upgrade. There’s enough anecdotal evidence to say it’s not on the upside.” . . .A second analyst agreed, saying: “Most of the market’s expecting their profit to come in below their guidance, but not dramatically so.”

We’re not even going to guess on this one. We’ll all know soon enough. But it doesn’t sound good.

Jesse Ventura: The Silver Surfer

by The Editors on May 14, 2009

Last night, while perusing the most watched YouTube videos of the day on our iPhone we clicked on an interview with former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura on the Larry King Show. We’ll listen to pretty much anything Ventura says for three reasons: one, he a former pro wrestler, two, his Minnesota accent is one of the best on record, and three, he’s insane in a what that makes him seem perfectly sensible.

During the interview Larry asked Governor Ventura if he would “ever want to run for office again.” Ventura replied:

I’m enjoying attempting to become the best surfer that I can be in Baja Mexico. Always remember this. Surfing is a dedication and it’s a life dedication toi do it. If someone were that dedicated to religion would they call him a religious bum?

Larry then pointed out that Ventura is a “very big man” and asked if surfing was difficult?

“It’s harder,” he said. “But I want to get my weight down another 30 pounds, but let’s remember the greatest surfer in the world is Laird Hamilton and he is 6’3″ and a half and weights 230 pounds.”

This is the second time Ventura has mention surfing vs. public office. In July 2008 Ventura said that he “found surfing to be much more honorable than the Senate.”

Watch his latest surf comments for yourself. It starts at about the 8:50 mark.

Kelly Slater In Sports Illustrated

by The Editors on May 13, 2009

Slater Boost08

As we don’t read print magazines all that much it took a while before we were able to check out the recent Sports Illustrated story on Kelly Slater by writer Gary Smith. Here is a piece:

Well, then … why did he ride the ocean? What was his purpose? The more he stared at the question, the more jumbled the answers grew, his whys like old clothes crammed in a drawer. They’d seemed to fit once, but the longer he looked at them now, the more holes and wrinkles he saw, the more whys he didn’t even recognize. Where the hell to begin?

It’s one of those stories where the writer tries a little too hard and ends up getting in the way. But it’s worth reading because it’s long and it’s about Kelly.

Scott Bass’ interview of Gary Smith on Surfer.com is also worth reading, though he obviously seemed to enjoy Smith’s writing stylings a little more than we did.

042309-55-1Rejoice West Coast shreds! There’s no need to head to Mt. Hood just yet. Mammoth Mountain is staying open until at least June 14, 2009, according to a blog post on the LA Times.

And we always love it when Mammoth says, “at least” because we know if they really wanted to they could keep the mountain open until July 4th, no problem.

Stowe Resort Up For Sales

by The Editors on May 13, 2009

StoweAmerican Insurance Group, the company that owns Vermont’s Stowe Mountain Resort announced today that they are putting the resort up for sale according to a story in the Burlington Free Press.

“We’re actually putting Stowe up for sale. So it’s official now,” Peter Tulupman, spokesman for AIG, told The Burlington Free Press this morning. . . Tulupman declined to comment on how much American International Group Inc. — which is mostly owned by the U.S. government after a sequence of federal bailouts in the wake of Wall Street’s collapse last fall— is seeking for the iconic resort which includes the lavish Stowe Mountain Lodge and the mountain’s operations.

As we learned in Hal Clifford’s book Downhill Slide resorts are all about the real estate that surround them and it is a buyers market right now. Anyone?

Illusion Labs takes their iPhone game Touch Grind to a much larger screen. Our question: if you’re going to fingerboard on a table, why not really fingerboard on a table?

Vans Sk8 Pool Service Upgrade

by The Editors on May 13, 2009

Vans Touch

Last night we downloaded an upgrade to the iPhone/iPod Touch game Vans Sk8 Pool Service (which is now only $2.99 for a limited time) and it reminded us that we still haven’t posted our review of what is probably the best skate game for the iPhone? So here it is two months late:

Our copy of Vans SK8 Pool Service arrived from Vans in a box on a brand new 8 gig Apple iPod Touch. How cool is that? We popped that thing open and began playing the game right away.

Follow the jump for a little overview of what we experienced.

0512 Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson 90410X4 Pattinson B Gr 02 Bauer Exc.JpgProduct placement appears to be one of the last standing forms of advertising that works in the mainstream market. Check this report from TMZ.com on how Billabong is getting some play from the vampires:

After Kristen Stewart was snapped smoking wearing this Billabong jacket on the set of “New Moon,” rabid fans quickly feasted on every last one available in stores across the country. Now, some opportunistic peeps are trying to flip the military-esque outerwear on eBay for upwards of $350 — and people are actually buying them!!!!!!!!!!!
