Air & Style Goes Back To Bergisel

by The Editors on November 4, 2009

Air StyleWe don’t speak German so we really have no business making fun of anyone who is bi-lingual, however, the information on the 2009 Billabong Air & Style scheduled for December 5, 2009 (we think) in Innsbruk, Austria’s Bergisel Stadium was nearly impossible for us to figure out.

Getting a position in the starting field was in great demand but now the 16 pros are confirmed and they will be on parade on 05.12.2009 in Innsbruck. The new setup will challenge the rider a lot: they will start 50 meters above zero; with an inrun of ca. 70 meters and a slope of 45° the rider get on the ground again after 30 meters and an awesome trick. The best jump gives the winner 1.000 points in the Swatch TTR World Tour, the Ring of Glory and the biggest Part of the prize money of € 75.000.

For a list of people who we think are going to be in the contest follow the jump. Thanks to Method Mag for helping us out with the details. [click to continue…]

Grenade CEO Gets A YoBeat Down

by The Editors on November 4, 2009

Joec4Brooke Geery gets right to the questions all of us have about what’s going on at the Kass brother’s glove company in YoBeat’s Hump Day Interview with Grenade CEO Joseph Condorelli.

After all, Joseph is an outsider. A loud-mouthed New Yorker who came from a business background, having never set foot on a snowboard, to run a snowboard company that at the time, was on the brink of disaster. And even though he supposedly didn’t know what a “beanie” was, he’s worked day and night for two solid years to keep the company afloat and thriving. Yeah, it’s not the same Grenade we all hung out at, now it’s a growing company that might actually be around for years to come. Love him or hate him, this is Joseph’s side of the story.

We knew there had to be someone running things behind the camo curtain.

We like Rob Machado and his big, burly, curly locks, but from what we’ve heard we’re going to absolutely love him after we finally see The Drifter with a theater full of civilians. You probably will, too. Then we’ll all buy up an bunch of Hurley product and Nixon watches and feel satisfied and complete.

So just as a reminder: the tour kicks on at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. For for the rest of the dates and places click the link.

Cartache’s New OC Skullcandy Office

by The Editors on November 3, 2009

B78568581Z120091103085736000G8Qkj0Bf2 LgIf you’re going to work for the man there’s nothing better than making the man come to you. Take Mike Carter for example, after years of being the marketing face of Electric Visual, he ducks out to take a global marketing job at the Park City, Utah based consumer electronics company Skullcandy. But does he follow the Angel Maroni’s trumpet and head off to the Holy Land? Not at all. He brings Skullcandy to him and the OC Register writes it up.

“The office in San Clemente will literally be a bridge from the snow to the sand,” said Mike Carter, Skullcandy’s vice president of global marketing. “It’s a compelling story because Park City has the best snow in the world and San Clemente is arguably the best surf spot in America. . . .The new 4,500 square foot office will be housed in a former bank on El Camino Real, but it will be far different from the typical buttoned up setting. A mini skate ramp and “boardroom,” a space for employees to hang their surfboards and wetsuits, are in the works. Showers will also be available.

Yeah. And it’s much closer to where Mike lives and he’s not movin’. But he’s a great marking guy so he left that part out.

Larosiliere Tells The Stoked Mentoring Story

by The Editors on November 3, 2009

Stoked MentoringStoked Mentoring’s Founder and Executive Director Steve Larosilliere tells the story of his organization on the Huffington Post.

In 5 years, we’ve worked with hundreds of youth in New York and L.A. and taught them valuable life skills in the process. Life skills such as goal-setting, networking, trust, patience, and how to overcome obstacles. What we discovered along the way was the need for at-risk youth to have positive role models and quality life experiences that add value and dimension to their lives. They need to develop their own “Story”. One that isn’t the same as the people in their community. One that is uniquely theirs. Instead of being an inner city high school dropout, they can be a snowboarder from the inner city who wants to work in advertising, has a mentor, and is a high school graduate.

Sleeping With The Big Brands

by The Editors on November 3, 2009

110209 11

Ever since the Marc Frank Montoya’s The Block Hotels shut their doors in December of 2008 action sports fans have been missing out on any really good places to sleep with their favorite brands in a themed hotel room. A Laguna Beach hotel is changing that with some help from SoCal’s Riviera Magazine and eight action sports fashion brands.

Through a collaboration between the La Casa del Camino Hotel, Riviera hooked up Roxy, Billabong, Billabong Women, Rip Curl, etnies, Lost, Quiksilver, and L*Space with some of Orange County’s top interior designers to create branded rooms in 10 of the boutique hotel’s 38 rooms. The resulting spaces run the gamut from beautifully modern (complete with Nelson Swag Leg desk and platform bench) to what can only be described as ASR trade show booths with beds and bathrooms.

Our favorite was the etnies eco suite (shown above with etnies vice president of marketing Don Brown). Using a skateboard theme (the only one in the hotel) etines worked with designer Eve Lowey of Studio Chameleon in Newport Beach to come up with a cool, environmentally friendly space. “The inspiration for the etines room was all about taking the skate eco design and bringing it together,” said Don Brown. King Snow Reigns Down In November

by The Editors on November 2, 2009

Kingsnow 1The skilled craftspeople behind King Shit Skateboarding magazine are peddling a new product this month: it’s called King Snow and it was guest art directed by Andrew Pommier. Here’s what they’re saying about it:

Ben Bilocq took our first ever cover, breaking the laws of reality by having two photos of the same trick on one image, thanks to photographer Oli Gagnon. . . Then Natalie Langmann investigated a few members of the Gypsy Mob and got to the bottom of what goes through the minds of these Winnipeg-born rippers. . . Tracey Anderson and Feet Banks terrorized Jess Kimura, Jed Anderson and Alex Cantin with some AMBUSH interviews. Andrew Hardingham told us how to use sick puppy dogs to your advantage when negotiating a contract.

Sounds, right straight to us. The mag will be in shops November 9. And hopefully in our mailbox even sooner than that.

Von Zipper Stabs A Shark Fin

by The Editors on November 2, 2009

Sharkfin

Apparently, for the past two years Australia’s Stab Magazine and Von Zipper have gotten together to throw a “water themed” party. This year’s was yesterday (November 1, 2009) and it was called Shark Fin Soup.

This year, a barge is parked 50 metres offshore from the Sydney harbour beach of Athol Bay, a beach famous for its white sand, blue water and occasional White Pointer sharks. . . Six cigarette boats pull in close to the party and point their snouts at the barge. On one, Vogue photographer Richard Freeman is shooting two girls for a feature in this magazine’s December issue.

As one of the commenters on the Stabmag.com said, “Shallow, vacuous, self-absorbed, self-important, selfish, extravagant, ridiculous, flamboyant, gay, drug-fuelled, over-the-top stupidity. There are children starving in this world because they can’t find one or two dollars to buy some food. I expect an invite next year.”

Follow the link for all the beautiful people photos.
