The Hundreds Loves LA Originals

by The Editors on August 17, 2018

The Hundreds in collaboration with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti have created an LA original collection.

LA Original is a program developed by the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles to cultivate the growing talent and entrepreneurship that calls LA home. With the aim to show that Los Angeles is a place where creativity thrives, LA Original has collaborated with artists and creators from Jen Stark to Anwar Carrots and Geoff McFetridge. All proceeds from the project received by the Fund supports the Downtown Women’s Center’s “Made by DWC” program, which teaches job training and maker skills to LA women transitioning out of homelessness.

The Hundreds capsule collection includes a T-shirt and pullover hoodie with a hand-drawn design by Bobby Hundreds himself. The collection drops on August 20, 2018 at at The Hundreds Los Angeles, LA Original’s MOCA pop-up, laoriginal.com, and thehundreds.com. For more info follow the jump.

Unlike many in the snowboard industry we didn’t get much time with Gerhard before his diagnosis, but we will forever cherish every minute we spent with him, his wife Kris, and their son Gerhard Gross IV.  Our thoughts are with Kris, little G, and Gerhard’s entire family. So Long, Yobeat.com It Was Good

by The Editors on August 2, 2018

Admittedly, we haven’t been paying much attention to anything that doesn’t fall pre-packaged into our email boxes, but we did want to take a moment to remember all the good times we’ve had with Yobeat.com over the past 21 years. There are far too many to mention, but let’s just say that we were there at the beginning, we’re thankful for everything the site helped create, and we’re glad to still be here waving goodbye to the last great independent snowboarding website.

Here’s what Yobeat’s founder Brooke Geery had to say about the site’s demise:

Dear Dedicated Readership,

Twenty-one years. When I began this website on my AOL account, I never imagined it would last this long or take me to the places it has. But they say all good things must come to an end, and my friends, that day is today. The website you love to hate will not see any futher updates. It will remain online for the time being, but may be deleted at any time. I recommend you print out your favorite articles now or forever live in regret when they are gone.

This was not an easy decision to come to, and it was aided in large part by a legal battle with my former partner. As a result, the name Yobeat no longer belongs to me. For the record, the instagram @yobeat is no longer affiliated with this website and any merchandise you may encounter is not either. The media juggernaut and the T-shirt company have parted ways and I do not want to do anything to inadvertently promote the latter.

Instead, I aim to continue my efforts on a new platform under the name Blower Media. As of right now, it’s just a logo and some stickers, but it could be something amazing some day. Stay tuned.

Brooke Geery
Founder, Editor, Publisher, Yobeat.com.

Torcom To Help Grow Weed Business

by The Editors on July 31, 2018

Longtime snowboard industry head Randy Torcom is the latest (of a growing list) to join the legal weed movement by taking a job at C21 Investments, as Vice President of Marketing. The company is focused on “building and acquiring market leading marijuana brands,” according to a press release.

“Brand integrity and authenticity are critical for success in the cannabis industry,” said Torcom. “C21 Investments is committed to a strong national and international brand strategy that delivers a compelling proposition of high-quality products, with life-style and value delivery that consumers can have a deep and meaningful connection with that will stand the test of time.”

Like, uh? Whoa! Sorry, just spilled our Cheetos. For the official word from . . .  like, wait, what were we just saying? Oh, ha, whatever. (We apologize for resorting to old, cliche stoner jokes in spite of the fact that marijuana is now a respected, mostly legal, and sometimes elegant form of adult relaxation.)

Element Sends 300 Skaters To Camp

by The Editors on July 12, 2018

In 2018 Element Skateboards is passing out 300 skate camp scholarships to deserving skateboarders from around the world. And it all stems from founder Johnny Schillereff’s love of skate camp when he was growing up.

“I moved around a lot and did not have much stability when I was young. That camp and skateboarding were the only constants in my life,” Schillereff says. “Being able to share skateboarding and the outdoors with kids who are in a similar situation that I was is so important to both Element and me personally. We couldn’t be more excited to make this contribution to the skateboarding community. This year, Element will send over 300 kids to skate camps around the world.”

How’s that for giving back to skateboarding by giving back to skateboarding? For the official word from Element, please follow the jump.

RIP: Grindline Founder Mark Hubbard

by The Editors on June 9, 2018

Mark “Monk” Hubbard, the mind and muscle behind Grindline Skateparks and the DIY skatepark movement in general died June 8, 2018 at his home in West Seattle, according to a story on Fox Q 13. His cause of death has not be announced. Hubbard was 47 years old.

For skateboarders across the world, Hubbard was a significant figure. In the early 90’s, he helped build Portland’s Burnside Skatepark, seen by many as the model for modern parks. “This guy invented DIY (Do it Yourself).” Thrasher Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jake Phelps said. “You see kids out there digging ditches for skateboarding, it’s because of Marty.” . . .Hubbard transformed his love of DIY skateboarding into a business. He and his Grindline crews built parks from Orcas Island to Israel with a passion that transcended a mere job.

We will think of him every time we roll the flowing lines of Mammoth’s Brother’s Skatepark. Hubbard is survived by his wife Jenny and three children Kaya, Leona, and Odin. Our thoughts are with them all. If you’d like to send a gift to support the family, please click the link for GoFundMe.
