Tomorrow at noon the votes from the Mavericks Surf Contest invitees will apparently decide whether or not the contest will run this Saturday, February 13, 2010, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News.
A poll of voters who have been poring over computer-model data suggests there is little doubt that the seventh big-wave champion will be crowned Saturday on the beach at Pillar Point. Waves measuring 40 feet on the face — considered the threshold for a big Mavericks day — are expected. . . “Ninety-nine percent,” is how longtime contestant Evan Slater described the chances for Saturday, adding, “It’s not going to be picture perfect, but it’s going to be big, real big if the forecast holds.” . . Santa Cruz’s Zach Wormhoudt, another longtime competitor, was just as confident, saying: “Let’s get ready to rumble.”
It appears the organizers’ talks about how important this whole event is to their sponsors are finally paying off. This should be good.
The Sponsorhouse story is an odd one. They started out trying to get kids to pay them money for the possibility of “getting sponsored”. Then in January of 2008 the company decided to change it’s name to Loop’d saying they were going to be the myspace of action sports. When they did, we made fun of them with a post titled Action Sports Gets Loopy.
Now, only two years later, they have changed their name again. This time to Hookit.com. Apparently, they were forced to change it after they “got caught in a Loop (aka Legal battle).” according to their website.
“We are really excited to finally roll out our new brand name and logo, and want to make sure all of our members and brand partners know that we are still the same company, offering the same products and services,” said Scott Tilton, CEO of Hookit.com. “We’ve had tremendous support during the transition and now we can solely focus on innovating new features for our members and partners again.”
We have to agree. The new name does explain exactly what they’re doing. . . Follow the jump for the complete press release. [click to continue…]
For actress AnnaSophia Robb to play Bethany Hamilton post shark attack in the new bio-pic Soul Surfer she had to lose her left arm. In the movies they do that with a little cover up, according to a story on Radaronline.com.
Robb wears a green sleeve over her arm that will be digitally erased for the final product to reflect Hamilton’s disability. . . Robb 16, and Lorraine Nicholson, 19, both clad in bikinis, knocked out sets of crunches in between takes.

Some snowboarders who looked like they had no idea what they were doing started an avalanche in Italy.
A walker who had seen (and filmed) the accident, called police who conducted a four hour search using dogs, heat seeking equipment and a helicopter. While officers were unable to find the snowboarding trio, it is believed they escaped unhurt.
This is a perfect reminder to avoid stopping in slide zones and to be clear before someone drops in above you.
The Goat & The Occasional Others are releasing their new album – The GOAT Speaks. And to celebrate Emerica is throwing a big party at 3 Clubs at 1123 Vine Street in Hollywood, CA. The evening will also commemorate the launch of the new GOAT x Emerica collab shoes hitting skate shops now! Music by The Goat and DJs The Blackouts, Heather Thompson, and Turbotito vs Timmy The Terror.

Fox Cable Networks is in advanced discussions on a deal that would sell its action sports channel Fuel TV to Viacom, according to several sources with direct knowledge of the talks. . . The sale was expected to close late last year, but the parties are still negotiating an agreement. Talks began last year when the companies discussed entering a joint venture around Fuel TV, but subsequent discussions led the parties to negotiations on a complete sale of the channel. Sources say Viacom will pay a sum in the low to mid-nine figures to secure the channel.
Great. If this goes through maybe MTV will finally add Parkour to the Fuel TV mix.
Okay, we’re not going to lie. . . this whole thing is kind of weirding us out. But as Hannah says, “It’s fun to be sexy.” Guess all this sexiness will help Hannah make more money for her village in Africa.
