Gentemstick: Tamai San’s Snowsurfing Boards

by The Editors on March 11, 2010

Gentemsticks

Youth Culture trend forecasters have been repeatedly pointing us toward Taro Tamai’s Gentemstick snowboards. First it was a two-year-old video on Youtube showing the Gentemstick crew cruising snow bowls in Japan. Now it is a post on the hype blog CoolHunting.com. But what are these retro-future snowboards exactly?

An answer to the homogenization of board shapes that happened as snowboarding gained mainstream appeal, Tamai’s goal is no less than to “perfectly blend into the terrain miraculously made of snow and wind, just as if birds flying in the sky or fish flowing in the stream.” The upshot of his philosophical approach to the sport (he calls it snow-surfing) is a line of boards renowned for their flexible fins, oversized sized fish tails and rideability in almost any snow condition.

So are these boards the “longboard skateboards” of snowboarding? Could be.

Sharks Seen Circling Missing Man’s Body

by The Editors on March 11, 2010

StoryA missing California man, Sam Zhoum, 35 of the San Francisco Bay Area, who rented a surfboard and paddled out at Laniakea on the North Shore of Oahu only to disappear in three to six foot surf was encouraged to take a surf lesson by a surf shop employee but declined, according to a story on KHON 2 TV. Now, the story has gotten even worse.

Around 7:30 Wednesday morning a fire search helicopter made a gruesome discovery about a mile and a half from Laniakea. . . “They saw a body off shore Papailoa Point about a quarter mile off, and they also saw sharks, three large Tiger Sharks exhibiting aggressive behavior and shortly after they were no longer able to see the body,” said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig.

The man, reportedly from the San Francisco Bay area was in his 30s.

[Update 2:25 PM: “This morning, a resident walking on Papailoa Point Beach found a pair of ragged black shorts. Police identified the shorts as belonging to Zhoum.” Hawaii News Now. Sounds like one of those tigers must have coughed them up.

Swami’s Surf Contest Clears First Hurdle

by The Editors on March 11, 2010

082909 23The city council in Encinitas, California has decided that it will open the world famous Swami’s for a potential contest even though the locals are all bitter on the idea, according to story in the San Deigo Union-Tribune.

The council voted 3-2 to allow world-renowned surfer Linda Benson to seek a city permit to hold her four-day women’s longboarding championship at Swami’s in October, as the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended. . . Mayor Dan Dalager, Councilman James Bond and Vice Mayor Maggie Houlihan said the city’s permit process will determine whether Benson’s contest can work at that beach. . . “That’s what the process is about,” Dalager said. “It may not get through the process, or it may.”

Maybe this will finally open the door for a Rip Curl Search event in the future. . .

Snowboarder Dies In Colorado Avalanche

by The Editors on March 11, 2010

A 20-year-old snowboarder who was riding with two friends in an area called Steep Gully #1 west of Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin triggered an avalanche that killed him on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 according to a report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

There is a convex knob in the middle of the starting zone for Steep Gully #1. The first rider triggered the avalanche as he rode over the knob. The avalanche broke to the ground along the convexity. The snowpack was very shallow, and rescuers estimated the average crown depth about 12 inches, and around 24 inches at the deepest. The avalanche was the full width of the gully, but left large areas of hangfire. . . The rider was caught and carried for most of the avalanche’s run. He was stopped by trees in the upper portion of the runout, and partially buried. His partners descended the path and used their snowboards to excavate him before organized rescue arrived. The avalanche broke trees approximately 6 inches in diameter.

The avalanche was reportedly 150 feet wide and it slid 800 feet. None of the snowboarders carried avalanche gear according to the report. The name of the snowboarder has not been released but he was reportedly from Spring Grove, Illinois and had been an employee at Breckenridge Resort since November. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Billabong Logo-1The wife of Balinese surfing legend Wayan Suwenda is continuing her battle against Billabong International over the distribution rights to the Billabong brand in Bali, according to a story in the Australian.
In our last update in December 2009 we mentioned that one person was already in prison and another had been added to Interpol’s most wanted list over this same skirmish. Now Suwenda is reported suing Billabong in Denpasar District Court for $168 million Australian.

In the past few years, the dispute has become very public in Indonesia, with CVBB taking out large advertisements in the local media putting its viewpoint, while Billabong has publicly replied to the allegations.
