Leave it to skateboarders to make the most of a terrible New Zealand Christchurch earthquake situation. Seems skaters are always looking on the bright side of every darkness.

We’ve always loved spring at Mammoth. After the Easter break is over most of Southern California packs away their snowboards and turns to other pursuits leaving an entire mountain of corn and slush empty for the taking. And this year it’s going to be even better as the resort has already committed to remaining open until July 4, 2011.
May in Mammoth is looking pretty, pretty, good. [click to continue…]

San Clemente, California surfer Jim Miller, 54, stopped to check the surf at the Trestles overlook on Sunday, April 3, 2011, and as he was walking back to his car he was hit on the foot by a rattlesnake, according to a story in the OC Register.
“I heard the rattle just as he got me and then again as he was taking off,” said Miller, 54. “I knew it was a rattlesnake right away and called 911 with my cellphone. . . “At the hospital, the nurse asked me twice if my affairs were in order and if I had a will.”
Miller ended up at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and after a short trip home checked back into the hospital on Tuesday. He is reportedly going home on April 7, 2011. Gotta be careful out in the wilderness, we guess.

If everyone got a Jim Phillips graphic as cool as Mob Grip’s new Sales Manager Bud “Mr. Griptape” Smith did when he was hired, we’d be running all kinds of business promotional news bits.
“Mob Grip is first and foremost a great product,” says Bud. “When you add amazing team riders and marketing, consistent quality and an innovative high performance product offering, it truly is a complete package. It’s all backed by a focused skateboard company committed to re-investing in skateboarding. I am very excited to be involved. I have no doubt the future looks bright.”
Sure enough. [click to continue…]

We don’t usually get all into the sneaker thing, but this new collection of Vans Eras from Ludwig Van is pretty dope. If you’re in LA on the evening of April 7, 2011 stop by Conveyor at Fred Segal in Santa Monica for the roll out party, then cruise over to Cheetahs Strip Club and catch Atiba and Ako (a.k.a. The Black Outs) for Altamont Music Night.

Stage 1 of the 4th Annual Ultimate Boarder snow, surf, skate triathlon wrapped up under blue skies at Mammoth Mountain on Saturday, April 2, 2011 with Chas Guldemond edging Mammoth loc and defending snowboard champ Trevor Jacob for the title. Shayne Pospisill finished third.
On his final run, Guldemond connected a 900 and switch double cork 1080 to beat out Jacob by 1.6 points. “At all my events I have entered this year, it keeps coming down to my last run,” said Guldemond smiling over his big win. “Overall it was a great day with spring conditions, and it was really fun to watch surfers and skaters all ride together,” he added.
Former pro snowboader Todd Richards had a rough time in the competition according to his Twitter feed and was not too happy with his 30th place finish. “What a time to have 3 bad slope style runs ! F word,” he Tweeted following the competition.

The photos from the ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior event at the shark bite capital of the world New Smyrna Beach Inlet, Florida have been cracking us up on a daily basis. But they’re also reminding us of two other things: how hard core Florida surfers are and how lucky we are to have waves most of the year.
Seriously, look at this photo again. Either Evan Geiselman has grow 7 feet since we saw him last or that wave he’s on is about 10 inch tall. “Challenging conditions” for sure. [click to continue…]

Snowboarder Danny Ferrari, 42, spent 30 minutes buried after he and a friend triggered an avalanche at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area on Friday, April 1, 2011.
“As it’s all going down, I’m just trying to get back on my board to try and stabilize myself so I don’t get washed into a tree or something and it was just out of my control. [I] tried to fight it the whole time and keep my face covered, and I though it was lights out. I mean, what can I say? I hit like six trees, must have traveled 500 yards, and I was able to get my right up just enough to get enough [space in front of my face] so I could breathe. And then I saw some light,” Ferrari told 9NEWS.
While it must have seemed like a long slide, responders reported that the snowboarder probably slid about 400 feet. Ferrari and his friends are very Lucky.
