Burton Makes Bagging It Easy

by The Editors on June 15, 2011

If Burton Snowboards only made travel bags (and dropped the whole snowboard hard and softgoods thing), they would still be one of the best brands in the world for one reason: their bags are bulletproof. For people who travel all the time in all different modes, Burton has some of the most intelligently designed bags, backpacks, and camera bags in the world. If that wasn’t enough, Burton has just released 90 new bag and luggage styles into the mix.

Burton’s new bags are designed to carry everything from laptops and skateboards to snowboards and a month’s worth of clothes. Road tested by Burton’s team of pro riders who travel year-round, every new travel bag, snow pack, photo pack, transit bag or ‘BYO’ bag can weather months of planes, trains and on-the-move adventures.

And while we’re not sure anyone needs all that much help deciding which bag to buy, Burton has been nice enough to create a website to help everyone pick the right bag. It’s called Bag Check. Check it out if you’re looking for new bags. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]

Drunk PR Guy Kills Skateboarder

by The Editors on June 15, 2011

Bilde-22Pat Doyle, 53, an allegedly drunk PR representative for the city of Brick Township, New Jersey (and former hockey coach), is now being charged with “with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, making an unsafe lane change and driving an unregistered vehicle” after mowing down and killing 19-year-old skateboarder Anthony Briffa (pictured right) on May 10, 2011 in a head-on collision, according to a story in Asbury Park Press.

Doyle was headed southbound on Jordan Road and attempting to pass another vehicle and entered the northbound lane, where authorities believe the teen was in the lane of travel, near the shoulder, when he was struck, investigators said at the time of the incident.

What, no vehicular manslaughter? Our thoughts are with Briffa’s family and friends. And we hope Doyle gets a proper punishment if he indeed is guilty.

Girl’s 3-D Unbeleafable In Downtown LA

by The Editors on June 13, 2011

3D Girls

Last night (June 12, 2011) Girl Skateboards in association with the Levi’s Film Workshop premiered their new Ty Evans directed short 3-D skateboard film Unbeleafable along with a retrospective of Girl films from the past at Los Angeles, California’s Downtown Independent Theater.

Afterwards, director Ty Evans and various members of the crew took to the stage to answer questions from the audience. The panel included Vincent Alvarez, one of the film’s skaters; Ian Spohr, the film’s stereographer; Marc Ritzema, the Director of Photography; Roham Rahmanian, 3D Producer; and Federico Vitetta, the film’s producer. The team discussed how the concept of the film came to fruition, the custom-created score from M83 and how they were able to pull off an incredible project in a short amount of time.

Following the Q&A everyone went to the roof top for a small, chill after party. Follow the jump for more of Mikey Tnasuttimonkol’s photos from the evening. [click to continue…]

Andy Wright’s Picture Basement

by The Editors on June 13, 2011

The crew at Videograss has created a “Open Shutter” video profile of snow photographer Andy Wright. In part one, Andy takes us into his basement to flip through old slides and prints from snowboarding’s analog era. And what a journey it is.

As a photographer Andy has always had an artist’s eye and a workman’s ethic. This seemingly rare combination has made him one of the most successful photographers working in snowboarding today. We’re not sure how Andy keeps himself entertained, but every time we see one of his photos we’re glad he’s figured out a way to keep it going.

A Skateboard Chair For Your Lazy Ass

by The Editors on June 13, 2011

31966979Japan-based weird skateboard products company RollingFoot is apparently selling a chair that is a skateboard, according to a post on Crunchgear.

The Isukebo [JP] of course, as manufactured by Japan-based RollingFoot. It’s essentially more of a chair with wheels that you can navigate like riding on a skateboard, foot brake included. . . Just push against the floor with your feet in order to move forward or shift your body weight to the left or right if you want to change direction. . . And no, the Isukebo is no gag product or design prototype. You can order it (if you live in Japan) for $650, but allow 2 weeks for delivery (it’s made to order).

Finally, a devices that allows us to get out and skateboard without getting up off our asses.

Glen E. Friedman Wins Vs. Mr. Brainwash

by The Editors on June 13, 2011

Friedmanvsbrain

Legendary skateboard and music photographer Glen E. Friedman won a summary judgement last week in his copyright infringement lawsuit against Mr. Brainwash a.k.a. Thierry Guetta (star of the Banksy film Exit Through The Gift Shop), according to a story on The Hollywood Reporter. Friedman had sued Guetta because the “street artist” used Friedman’s iconic photo of Run D.M.C., (seen above in original and Mr. Brainwash version via Boing Boing) without permission. The judge seemed pretty logical on this one:

“To permit one artist the right to use without consequence the original creative and copyrighted work of another artist simply because that artist wished to create an alternative work would eviscerate any protection by the Copyright Act,” concludes Judge Pregerson. “Without such protection, artists would lack the ability to control the reproduction and public display of their work and, by extension, to justly benefit from their original creative work.”

Word. Now, all that is reportedly left is for the courts to decide how much Glen can recoup in damages. We’re guessing it will be quite a lot.
