Skateboarding Dad Goes Down Hard

by The Editors on June 20, 2011

North Carolina skateboarder Jamie Hargrave, 28, went out for a roll on June 3, 2011, while his 6-year-old son Jamie cruised along beside him on a scooter. No one is really sure what happened, but Hargrave crashed and ended up with serious head injuries, according to a story in the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald.

Hargrave was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Horton said, with injuries to his head. . . “He has bivascular skull fractures, cerebral edema and intercranial hemorrhaging,” Horton said. . . While Hargrave has since regained consciousness, he doesn’t recognize family members, though he has made progress. . . “He can tell you who he is now,” Horton said. “That’s a plus because he couldn’t a week ago.”

Hargrave was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and now his mother Lisa Horton has a message to other mothers:

“If he would have been wearing a helmet, he’d be home today,” Horton said. “Buy your kids helmets. If you’ve got a grown kid who likes to skateboard, get them a helmet.”

Not bad advice.

Grandpa Cofall Learns To Skateboard

by The Editors on June 20, 2011

CofallSeventy-one-year-old Ron Cofall should be an inspiration to anyone thinking they might be getting to old for skateboarding.

According to a Justin Paprocki story in the Island Packet. Cofall began skateboarding last year at 70 years old when his grandson wanted to go to the Bristol Skatepark in Hilton Head, South Carolina. And he hasn’t stopped yet, even though he’s gotten broke off several times.

He’s learned from his mistakes, the only catch being his mistakes happen with a hard fall on the concrete. He’s broken his wrist, knocked his head so hard it damaged a retina, hurt his neck to the point he needed a brace, and done other damage that has required overnight stays in a hospital. . . Getting hurt isn’t a deterrent. It’s just an impediment to doing what he wants. He’s had spills in motocross and wipeouts windsurfing. It hasn’t stopped him before. So this comes as no surprise to his family. . . “We do worry about him getting hurt,” said his daughter-in-law, Jackie. “But he doesn’t want to quit. And we respect that.”

Apparently, 70 is the new 40, not to mention that few pads offer more protection than a full Depends adult diaper.

Jackass Ryan Dunn Dies In Car Crash

by The Editors on June 20, 2011

Dunn2Actor and “stuntman” Ryan Dunn, 34, who was probably our favorite of the guys made famous by MTV’s Jackass TV show and movies died in a car crash around 3 AM this morning (Monday, June 20, 2011) according to a story on the Washington Post.

West Goshen Township police confirmed that the prankster and an unidentified passenger were killed when Dunn’s Porsche went off Route 322 in Pennsylvania and burst into flames around 3 a.m. on Monday. Speed may have been a factor in the crash, according to the Associated Press.

Dunn had reportedly posted a photo earlier in the evening of him drinking with two friends. Dunn most recently was the host of Proving Grounds: Where Trial Meets Error a new series which just premiered on the G4 Network on June 14, 2011 (click here to watch a promo clip). Our thoughts are with Dunn’s family and friends.

Billabong’s Designs On Humanity

by The Editors on June 17, 2011

On Wednesday night (June 15, 2011), while we were lounging poolside in the desert sipping Sofia and watching the moon rise to the muffled backbeat of palm trees rustling in a hot breeze, the rest of the action sports world was crowded in at Hollywood’s Paramount Studios to smoke cigarettes, view art, listen to music, and most importantly, watch mostly naked girls walk the cat at Billabong’s Design For Humanity event. It went a little like this.

Skateboarding The Public Domaine In Paris

by The Editors on June 17, 2011

Tomorrow (June 18, 2011) at La Gaîté lyrique in Paris, France a huge skateboarding culture show titled Public Domaine will be opening.

Public Domaine, with an “e”, is the homage paid to an art form which has chosen a plank and four wheels as its medium of self-expression with which to reclaim the public domain and to reinterpret it with its twists and whorls on the asphalt. Because “skateboarding” is much more than just a sport, an activity, a hobby or a means of transport… Over the years, it has forged itself a rich, evolving aesthetic and transformed itself in the course of its encounters with artists – from designers to musicians – who have taken it as their traveling companion.

The show features art by Neck Face, Yogi Proctor, Adam Wallacavage, Donny Miller, Deanna Templeton, Cleon Peterson, Michael Burnett, Mike O’Meally; music by Dinosaur Jr, Tommy Guerrero, Mix Master Mike, Ray Barbee, McRad, Lords of The Underground, Boys Noize, Antipop Consortium, Busy P, Bad Shit, and The Goat, plus skate demos from a slew of teams. The show runs from June 18 – August 7, 2011. Click the link for more info.

The Fletchers: Surfing Is The Family Business

by The Editors on June 17, 2011

Fathers-Day-Family-Business-Herbie-Christian-Nathan-Greyson-Fletcher.6567355.40Writer Chasen Marshall, the former editor of Longboard Magazine, dropped by the Astrodeck headquarters in San Clemente, California to check in on the “First Family of Surfing” for the OC Weekly and here’s a little of what he had to say about their time with the Fletchers.

Nearly 20 years after its anointment as such in an Esquire cover feature, the First Family of Surfing remains original. It has grown and diversified, but at its core, the Fletchers are still a surfing family: Grandpa Walter was a big-wave pioneer; Herbie, now 58, is a surf legend and still surfs Lowers; and his sons are surfing innovators. They’ll talk about the past—tell you where they’ve been, about the drugs they’ve taken, describe the mistakes they’ve made, all without a hint of reverence or regret.

If you’ve been wondering what Herbie, Dibi, Christian, Nathan, and Greyson have been up to lately, click the link for the rest of the story.

Converse Launches The Kenny Anderson KA-One

by The Editors on June 15, 2011

To promote the launch of his new KA-One shoe from Converse Kenny Anderson kickflipped into a nose manual in LA and didn’t stop until he got to Las Vegas, or at least that’s the hook to the film LA to Vegas.

We can say this: Kenny spent like a year on his front wheels for this one (even ding some skateboard towing behind a bus to show how tough he is). Watch and you’ll see what we mean. . . For more info on how Converse is launching this shoe follow the jump. [click to continue…]

The NSSA’s 2011 Smartest Surfers List

by The Editors on June 15, 2011

Taylorpitz.ChrisgrantwebWithout going into any cranky rantings about how bullshit anything over a 4.0 grade point average is (because we all know honors classes are easier for all kinds of reasons), we do think it’s cool that surfers who get good grades are recognized by the National Scholastic Surfing Association.

So, for 2011 here are the best GPA in the line-up:

Canyon Crest Academy’s Tad McCardell 4.7 GPA
Olive Grove Charter’s Parker Coffin 4.67 GPA
Laguna Beach High’s Taylor Pitz 4.4 GPA (pictured right)

Congrats to all three. It’s great to see surfers being congratulated for doing something with their minds for a change. For all the rest of the NSSA surfers who completed the last school year at or above a 3.5 GPA follow the jump. [click to continue…]
