Olympic Swimmer Lies About Skateboarding

by The Editors on October 3, 2011

Australian Olympic swimmer Kenrick Monk who broke his elbow falling from his skateboard apparently lied to police telling them the injury was the result of a bicycling hit-and-run accident, according to a story in the Herald Sun.

But Swimming Australia said on Saturday that Monk had now changed his version of events, admitting he was not involved in a car accident. . . “The 23-year-old actually broke his elbow in two places falling off a skateboard with no other vehicle involved,” it said in a statement. . . The Commonwealth Games relay gold medallist, who also competed at the Beijing Olympics and the recent world championships in Shanghai, was on his way to training when the accident occurred.

It appears that Monk will never be able to “fully straighten his right arm again.” Well, at least he can still skate.

Ishod Wair Wins Maloof South Africa

by The Editors on October 3, 2011

Ishod Win

Ishod Wair rolled through David Bachinsky, Jack Curtin, and slipped by Durban born Tommy Flynn to win the first Maloof Money Cup South Africa and take home $100,000. (PLG won the vert)
It was an amazing event, apparently.

“This was absolutely incredible,” said Joe Maloof, creator of Maloof Money Cup and owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. “I’ve never seen anything like it. The fans were absolutely incredible. And Tomny just did an incredible job and did his country proud. It just upped the level of excitement for the fans, and you couldn’t even here the announcers over the cheering crowd. The people here in South Africa, and Kimberley welcomed us with open arms and we’ve had the time of our lives. This is an incredible country and we are excited for the future of skateboarding here and I’m confident we’ll see a champion from South Africa emerge very soon.”

Baker Skateboards Leaves Blitz For BBD

by The Editors on October 1, 2011

Baker SkateboardsBeginning today (October 1, 2011) Baker Skateboards will be distributed by Andrew Reynolds’ co-owned Baker Boys Distribution company and will no longer be part of Blitz Distribution.

“It’s been a great run over at Blitz Distribution with Per and everyone there,” said Baker CEO Andrew Reynolds. “I want to thank them all for everything they have done for me and Baker over the years and also for helping me bring Baker Home.”

Blitz President Per Welinder is obviously proud of the part his company played in the development of the Baker brand:

“With Baker I’m happy to see that Blitz has once again been a contributor to the worldwide success of a skate brand, and I am certain BBD will do a great job carrying the Baker torch moving forward,” Welinder said. “With Baker departing Blitz will continue in its tradition of incubating and distributing brands and will now focus its efforts on the growth in the Sk8Mafia and JSLV brands in particular.”

It was a homecoming of sorts for Baker Skateboards. The company will join Deathwish Skateboards, Shake Junt, Heroin Skateboards, and Thunder Trucks at Baker Boys Distribution. Seems like the only missing piece to Reynolds’ Baker Boys puzzle is Altamont. . . hmmm?

The Quiksilver Pro France Infographic

by The Editors on September 30, 2011

Quikpro InfoSurfer Magazine has created an amazingly beautiful infographic overview of stats leading into the ASP Dream Tour’s stop in France. Here’s what they’re saying:

With the Quiksilver Pro in France set to kickoff the European leg of the tour on October 4, we took a step back from all of the Ke11y hysteria and examined the rest of the tour’s relationship to the venue. And although Kelly and Owen will surely be contenders, we found that Mick Fanning’s 60 percent event-win ratio over the past five years makes him a major player.

But don’t come expecting a video filled with naked children. No, no, no. This is a snowboard video. Sure, they could have just called their movie Walline, but then we wouldn’t have gotten all this Google search traffic.

Vestal is located at 730 West 17th Street, Costa Mesa, California.
