Despite higher sales for four consecutive quarters Quiksilver still has not been able to turn a Q1 profit, according to a story on Marketwatch.com.
For the quarter ended Jan. 31, Quiksilver reported a loss of $22.6 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $16.3 million, or 10 cents a share. Excluding restructuring impacts and year-ago interest charges, the adjusted per-share loss from continuing operations widened to 13 cents from a loss of 5 cents.
The company’s stock was trading down on the news, obviously. For a transcript of the entire March 8, 2012 Quiksilver analysts call (including Bob McKnight’s take on the quarter) click here.

Competitors got an early start today (March 8, 2012) in the Burton US Open of Snowboarding Halfpipe Semi-Finals and it’s a good thing they did because by the end of the day’s event the pipe was getting pretty warm and slushy. Lucky for Greg Bretz (above) he put down his frontside melon, backside inverted 900 mute, frontside 1080 tail grab, Cab 720 mute and a frontside double cork 1080 indy run right away and got to watch everyone try to beat it. No one did. Danny Davis and Louie Vito came the closest. The 13 qualifiers from the semi-finals will join former event winners Danny Kass, Kazuhiro Kokubo, and reportedly Shaun White (though he has a history of bailing on the US Open at the last moment) in the finals.
In the women’s comp Elena Hight continued her dominating ways and threw her “banger backside method, frontside 720 melon grab, Cab 720 mute grab, frontside indy grab, backside 900 no grab and an alley pop backside rodeo indy grab. Elena, Arielle Gold, Gretchen Bleiler and and four other qualifiers will join Kelly Clark in the halfpipe finals on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

Skateboarding in the great outdoors. Breathe it in. Yes, the surprise is how good it looks. Clothing by people who skateboard. We like it and we’re not even fishermen.
From the number of dead opossums we see by the side of the road, we would expect more of them are into skateboarding, but this one apparently loves the snow at Liberty Mountain, Pennsylvania. We apologize in advance.

Would you be surprised if we were to tell you that Sebatien Toutant and Jamie Anderson were the top slope style qualifiers in the 2012 Burton US Open of Snowboarding? No? Well don’t be because Seb busted out a Cab hard way 270, Cab double under flip mute grab, backside double cork 1080 mute grab, frontside on to wall ride 360 out, 50-50 to backside rodeo melon grab out on his first run and no one even came close even though they had two more tries. Maxence Parrot and Janne Korpi qualified in second and third.
For the women Jamie Anderson locked down a second run that included a board slide 270 out, backside 540 mute grab, switch backside 540 mute grab, backside tail slide and 50-50 to tail grab. Kjersti Østgaard Buaas qualified in second and Spencer O’Brien nabbed the third spot.

“. . . an interview with “northwest legend Temple Cummins, a trifecta of Norwegian perspectives—including an interview with Danny Larsen, a photo essay from the hidden valley of Tamok and split board survival in the Lyngen Alps—pura niece in Spain, and lurker life at Mt. Hood’s Government Camp.”

Signal Snowboards had a great urban snowboarding idea. Rent a house in Minnesota and use it for filming base. Sadly, the winter never really hit all that hard, but the low snow content didn’t stop the Signal video cameras from rolling, apparently. More videos are on the way, so yeah, we guess we’re feeling Minnesota, too.
