On Wednesday, May 2, 2012 the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a “motion aimed at outlawing recess skateboarding or “bombing,”” according to a story in the LA Times.
On a 12 to 0 vote, the council instructed City Atty. Carmen Trutanich to draft an ordinance that would prohibit “unsafe” skateboard activity and limit riders to a speed of 25 mph. . . The proposal was initiated by Councilman Joe Buscaino, who described it as a response to the death of two skateboarders over the last year. Buscaino, the council’s newest member, said he wants to end downhill skateboard “bombing” — the practice of riding at high speeds, sometimes while weaving in and out of traffic — in his harbor district.
Ordinances that specifically single out skateboarding are bad for all kinds of reasons. Rather than create special rules that apply only to skateboarders the LA City Council should simply apply the rules of the road the govern bicycles and cars. Of course, that would be too simple and not nearly as headline grabbing.
Yep. Gabe Medina got up in the air and do those reverses again. Got ’em on lock. Mark Occhilupo won his round of 48 heat and helped send Michel Bourez packing, but he came in second in his no losers round of 24 heat, so he’s still in it (and at his age). Spy just launched a collection of “vintage inspired” sunglasses titled the Crosstown Collection. They’re describing them as “stylish, handmade sunglasses inspired by ’50s and ‘60s fashion, music.”
“We worked with a small crew of athletes and fashion-forward advocates with the intent of reinventing ‘classiness’ with our own point of view,” says Michael Marckx, SPY President. “We cut our design team loose to represent what’s happening within the creative ranks of our universe, to make something that they completely groove on, which led to a really unique handmade approach that you can feel and certainly see in the line.”
Tony Hawk speaks to Entrepreneur Magazine about selling things, selling out, and not being a sellout. On the way he discovered this bit of business wisdom: “People don’t call you a sellout until your stuff finally sells. And it’s finally selling out.”
James Smith, the executive director of The Kona School has a pretty cool idea. Since it seems few school districts have time for anything other than improving test scores, let alone help kids learn the skills they’ll need to work in the world, Smith has come up with a better idea. Build a school at a skatepark. Plans for the first one are underway at Jacksonville, Florida’s Kona Skatepark.
By incorporating the most innovative instructional strategies with progressive technology, a focus on healthy living, and green campus construction, the mission of Kona School is to inspire in each student a desire to learn creatively, think independently, and act responsibly.
Can’t imagine that parents could ask for much more than that. Check it out.
Just a reminder: On May 5, 2012 (yes, it’s Cinco de Mayo) Laguna Beach, California’s AR4T Gallery will host an opening reception for Ben Brough’s new solo show, Lights Out Beach City.
Lights Out Beach City expands on the highly vagrant work imagined by Brough over fourteen years using space, color, cartooning, collage, and painting techniques. Screeching imagery of food, music, coastal living, cinema, sex and landscapes in styles and mediums selected to clash by intention.
On April 28, 2012 Los Angeles’s Known Gallery kicked off a group show presented by The Seventh Letter and Neff and co-curated by Agenda’sAaron Levant. Here is video from the opening night. If you missed it, be bummed. Then you’ll know better next time.
Well, now, according to a story on Yahoo News, Google is promising to spend $200 million more to market those channels in hopes of getting a little more traffic that they can sell to other advertisers.
Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s global head of content, pledged that YouTube will spend more than $200 million to market the channels across Google and its advertising network. After years of relying largely on user-created videos, YouTube has increasingly focused on partnering with premium content providers to lure audiences for longer viewings and attract advertisers with higher quality videos.
If Google is only going to promote the channels on “Google and it’s advertising network” it would appear that what Kyncl use of the word “spend” is a little disingenuous as running ads on its own network technically doesn’t cost Google anything. But it makes a great headline.
Big wave titan Nathan Fletcher has apparently “earned a seat” at the Jagermeister shot slamming table according to this new commercial..
“Jägermeister has always been consumed socially. This product was originally developed for, and dedicated to, hunters that have deep connections to their craft and each other. The “Stronger Bond” campaign triggers stories of this kinship and bonding from the brand’s deep history and highlights that bond amongst this exceptional group of men,” says Michael Volke, Member, Executive Board, Mast-Jägermeister SE.
Because there’s nothing active, hard charging men love more than drinking. Together. As men, man.
