Stevie Caballero Is Poetry In Motion

by The Editors on June 1, 2012

Not really much more to say about this Stevie Caballero clip than that. But we won’t stop Cab from explaining:

This little video was all filmed within a few hours one Sunday afternoon in the skull bowl at Lake Cunningham skatepark in San Jose, Ca. by my good friend Jason Haley after discussing with him about making this art piece for sometime now. We finally found a day we could shoot it, then we spent a few more hours a couple of days later editing it at my house on his computer and put this cool Metallica cover i found on a compilation rock cd for kids and it fit so well with this piece.

Yep. Black and white really captures the moment. . .

Quiksilver Has No Agenda On The Road

by The Editors on June 1, 2012

Quiksilver certainly is attempting to downplay some of their previous over-the-top luxury helis-and-yachts surf films with No Agenda. Here’s what they’re saying about the film:

No Agenda is not about selling boardshorts. It’s not about the latest marketing advertisements and campaigns. It’s not about champagne, leather couches and expensive boat trips. It’s all about beach traffic, bottom turns, sun burns, cold beer, ding repair, dirty wax, flat spells, f#!king kooks, getting burned, local legends, lost luggage, magic boards, nut rash, lofty punts, onshore wind, perfect barrels, sandy hair and sharing waves. It’s good, it’s bad, it’s surfing. This movie has No Agenda.

Well, except for that whole “promoting the brand” thing, of course. But then again, it looks good. Click the link for film tour dates beginning June 15, 2012 in Miami.

Nike Dumping Umbro & Cole Haan

by The Editors on June 1, 2012

Nike-LogoDon’t think that Nike is afraid to dump brands that don’t fit in with its current growth plans. According to a story on Zacks.com, the owner of Hurley and Converse is planning to “divest” soccer brand Umbro and its dress shoe label Cole Haan. And they hope to get it done by May of 2012.

We believe the reason behind the divestiture is that Cole Haan and Umbro’s performance does not match with the performance of Nike’s other brands. . . We believe the company’s decision to divest its two underperforming brands will boost its bottom line. Meanwhile,in an attempt to expand its global reach and market share, Nike is capitalizing on growth opportunities in emerging markets, especially China.

Maybe this will allow Nike to spend even more on action sports global domination.

Robert “Sticky” Shaw At AR4T

by The Editors on June 1, 2012

519

Laguna Beach, California’s AR4T is kicking off Robert “Sticky” Shaw’s first solo art exhibition Love Kills this Saturday night (June 2, 2012).

“Love Kills” is a window into the past, present and future. The story starts in a time when Sticky was an adolescent and he suffered from a disorder called “Cutting” The “Cutting” came about from the loss of a dear family friend who took his own life. Sticky also at this time was a heavy drinker and was experimenting with prescription drugs and marijuana. He fell in love with Punk music and as tradition has it, he fell madly in love with a girl. They dated for a short period, and as a young adult it seemed like years. Then one day she moved to New York to follow her dreams and was gone. Suffering her loss, in his room – a comfort zone surrounded with images of punk rock heroes – Sticky cut himself to release his anger and frustration.

The opening reception starts at 6 PM on June 2, 2012. AR4T is located at 210 North Pacific Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, California. [click to continue…]

Volcom Pro Fiji Draw Is Out

by The Editors on May 31, 2012

Round 1 of the Volcom Pro Fiji is going kick off with a bang as Jordy Smith, Brett Simpson, and Freddy P face off in Heat 1. And things are reportedly looking good for a swell.

“We’ve got a ton of swell lining up for the first week of the Volcom Fiji Pro,” Kevin Wallis, Surfline forecaster, said. “The event will get off to a quick start on Sunday the 3rd with a solid southwest swell at Cloudbreak along with favorable easterly wind. Wind will remain favorable for the first half of the following week as the swell tapers down. Long range charts point to a larger southwest swell for the 8th – 10th, if forecast models prove to be correct.”

This should be good. For those of us on the west coast the live broadcast will begin around 1 PM PT on Saturday, June 2, 2012 (don’t let the dateline fool you). Follow the jump for the official word from the ASP including the complete Round 1 Draw. [click to continue…]

Drunk Driving Skateboarder Killing Dr. Gets Off

by The Editors on May 31, 2012

Alix+Rice+1Remember Dr. James Corasanti, the prominent New York physician who drove drunk, hit and killed a 18-year-old skateboarder Alix Rice (pictured right), and then drove straight home leaving her dead on the side of the road, deleted text messages from his phone, and allegedly wiped evidence off his car back in July of 2011?

Well, the amazing legal system in Buffalo, New York worked its wonders for the well-connected doctor when, after 13 days of trial the jury “acquitted Corasanti on all felony charges related to the death of the 18-year-old longboard skater,” according to a story in the Buffalo News.

Jurors acquitted Corasanti of second-degree manslaughter, the most serious charge he faced, and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. The jury also acquitted him of two evidence-tampering charges: deleting text messages from his mobile telephone and removing the victim’s blood and body tissue from his car. . . He also was acquitted of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, resulting in death.

What is insane about this entire story is that everyone agrees that the doctor was driving drunk, texting, and that he hit and killed Rice and continued driving home, but the jury apparently believes that Corasanti didn’t know he had hit a person. Apparently, that makes a difference in legal terms. All Corasanti was found guilty of was misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

Rice’s family was obviously blown away by the injustice. All Rice’s mom could say after the verdicts were read was “What the fuck?” The mom’s boyfriend was escorted from the court room for “yelling expletives” at the jury.

Buffalo News columnist Donn Esmonde, who wrote a column titled Justice Blindsided by Outcome, was equally appalled.:

But the ultimate tragedy, to my mind, is the way this morality play ended: with no justice done. Sedita said he has never, in 24 years as a prosecutor, been as “astonished” by a verdict. . . .”We tried the case as best we could,” said the district attorney. “I am sorry, on behalf of Alix, that she did not get justice.”

Alix Rice’s family is pursuing a civil case against Corasanti, however, all that will do is get insurance money. No story we have linked to has caused us more pain than this. Our thoughts are with Rice’s family and friends and we hope they can eventually find some kind of justice in this completely broken system.
