Falling Heroes Trip Up US Open Of Surfing

by The Editors on July 30, 2012

Miguel-Pupo-Day-3

The big boys of the dream tour had a rough go in round one at the Nike US Open of Surfing. For a while it seemed like none of the ASP’s top 16 would make it out alive: Mick Fanning, Taylor Knox, Ace Buchan, Owen Wright, Taj Burrow, CJ and Damien Hobgood, and Matt Wilkinson all fell sputtering in the Huntington Beach surf.

There were, however, some survivors in the four man heats in two foot (maybe) waves: Jordy Smith, Kelly Slater, Freddy P, Gabriel Medina, Adriano de Souza, Michel Bourez, Bede Durbidge, Josh Kerr, and Dane Reynolds (remember him?). Miguel Pupo, (pictured above) who had the highest heat score of the day with a 18.07, was worried after seeing some many great surfers get knocked out.

“There are some crazy heats in the first round and I saw Mick (Fanning) and Owen (Wright) go down, so I was kind of nervous,” Pupo said. “It’s such a difficult wave to surf and in these tough conditions, so I’m happy to make it through.”

Brett Simpson and John John Florence haven’t surfed yet (they surf tomorrow) and hopefully, they’ll survive their heats. For a complete results breakdown, and the official word from the ASP, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Surfer Magazine Launches Salted For Girls

by The Editors on July 30, 2012

Surfer Magazine gives the “for girls” publication genre another go with Salted, “a much-overdue homage to women’s surfing,” according to the release.

“There are so many amazing female surfers right now and so many interesting stories that aren’t being told,” says SURFER Magazine Managing Editor, Janna Irons. “It’s great to finally give them the attention they deserve—and to have a home for all the beautiful images we’ve collected. I’m so excited we were able to create something that celebrates all we’ve been missing out on.”

We’ll say this again: if advertisers want to keep spending money on magazines that their target market will never read, why should publishers get in the way. Take the money, make the profit, and move on. Salted will be on newsstands until October 16, 2012 and as an annual one-off we could see it working. Skate Or Die Doco Needs Kickstart

by The Editors on July 30, 2012

For the past four years New York Times writer Azam Ahmed and Director Ryan Ferguson have been working on a documentary film showing how skateboarding is changing lives in Chicago’s gang infested streets. Here’s what Ahmed has to say about Skate or Die:

We’ve scraped by with almost no money, compiling more than 100 hours of footage that follows the life of one skater who was shot in gang crossfire while sitting on his mother’s porch. Here’s the original story that was an inspiration for the film. . . Now, we need to cut about 100 hours of footage into a movie. To do that, we need a top-notch editor. While we’ve cut costs in every way imaginable, to professionally cut this film will cost about $35,000.

The filmmakers have have $29,940 already pledged on Kickstarter, but the have only 60 hours to reach their goal of $35,000 or they lose it all. If there is anything you can do to help the project, please click the link and make a donation.

Jenkem Gets Brian Wenning On Lockdown

by The Editors on July 30, 2012

Brian-Wenning-4-SmallerWe mentioned this several times, but the great thing about starting a business in 2012 America is that there will never be a worse time to kick one off. Brian Wenning announced over the weekend that he is launching a new skateboard brand called Lockdown. Jenkem Magazine has an interview with Wenning that includes all the details.

Why did Wenning start it?

Because when is this bullshit recession gonna end? And in a recession if you put in 14 hours of work or whatever I don’t think you are gonna waste your money buying a fucking Element board. There’s also good things about a recession, like there are so many good skaters right now that aren’t hooked up.

US Open of Snowboarding Moves To Vail

by The Editors on July 30, 2012

Logo.Burton UsopenOver the weekend a photo got out that allegedly shows a banner for the 2013 US Open Snowboard at Vail, Colorado. It was posted on the AngrySnowboarder.com site, then reposted on Yobeat.com.

Now, Burton has officially released the information. “Burton Snowboards and Vail Mountain officially announced today that the Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships is moving to Vail, Colorado starting in 2013. The 31st edition of the US Open will take place at Vail’s Golden Peak from February 25 – March 2, 2013.”

Here’s what Jake has to say about it:

First off, I just want to thank Stratton Mountain in Vermont where the US Open took place for so long,” said Jake. “Stratton not only hosted the Open for 27 years, but also played a pivotal role in making resort riding a reality. And as we look to the future progression of the US Open, I feel that Vail offers us the ideal venue to host the event. Vail is an incredible mountain and has been my snowboarding home-away-from-home for over 20 years. I have no doubt that the US Open at Vail will only grow in its legacy as the premier rider-driven event in the world.”

Moving the Open to Vail kind of makes it just another contest and rips the whole heritage thing out by the roots, but changes have to be made sometime and it might as well be now. Have to admit we’re not going to miss that cross country flight. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]
