Forest Bailey’s November trip to Japan turned out pretty well as he took home top honors in the Burton Rail Days in downtown Tokyo on November 17, 2012.
Forest Bailey had this to say about his win, “I couldn’t be more happy. I broke my board in the quals, and the board I borrowed wasn’t my own, but I pulled through and made it all happen. It was a great time.”
Yeah, and he nabbed $15,000 and that’s boss. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]
After several days of watching surfers that only the most hardcore fans have ever heard of, the ASP top seeds paddled out at the 2012 Reef Hawaiian Pro and it was game on as usual. John John Florence (above) may have had the highest scoring air of the day, but it was Kelly Slater who reportedly drew the biggest crowd during his heat against Sunny Garcia, Alex Smith and Jesse Mendes.
Slater’s comments after the heat were classic:
“He’s just as grumpy as ever, I love it,” said Slater, on Sunny. “He has to catch the first wave and paddles right back around you. You’ve got to try to get a score and put a little pressure on him… but you know Sunny, he’s stubborn, he’s got this mentality where you know he’s going to play the heat his way, and you can’t change that. So you have to do your own thing.”
Slater one their exchange, but Garcia took home the $10,000 win in the Clash of the Legends event over Kaipo Jaquias, Mark Occhilupo, and Tom Curren. For the rest of the action from the day including the round of 64 results and the first two heats of the round of 32, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
Almost 86 per cent of votes cast at Globe’s annual general meeting on Wednesday were against the company’s remuneration report for the 2011-12 financial year. . . That follows a 74 per cent vote against Globe’s pay policy at last year’s annual general meeting. . . Under new corporate laws, shareholders of a company receiving two consecutive votes of 25 per cent or more against its remuneration can force the company’s board to face re-election.
Apparently, the shareholders (who only own 8.6 percent of the company) don’t like the fact that CEO Matt Hill made $721,720 in a year when the company only made $100,000 in profits. So, Globe has 90 days to have a “spill meeting.” Wonder how that will go?
Sessions, the OG shred clothing company, opened their newest retail store in Palo Alto, California on Friday, November 16, 2012.
This store in Palo Alto is a valuable opportunity to connect with the local community and increase brand awareness.” said Cindi Ferreira Busenhart, SESSIONS President and Co-Owner explained, “We’ve been local to the South Bay for twenty years and we’re thrilled to be here.” . . . The store is the second of three forecasted to open this month, the first being in Santa Cruz, CA, the third in Truckee, CA. In addition to opening local stores the company looks forward to bringing back its street line in the coming year.
Can’t really imagine an outerwear brand diving into retail, but as we’ve said several times, there’s probably no worse time to do it. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]

O’Neill founder Jack O’Neill had a herd of media people rolling through his front yard yesterday after someone noticed what looks like a whale fossil in his front yard at Pleasure Point, according to a story on KSBW.
On Thursday, O’Neill’s house became even gnarlier when a lower-than-usual low tide revealed a gigantic skeleton just outside his back door and seawall. . . The bones were vertebrae that had been fossilized. . . As word of the skeleton spread on social media websites, several hypotheses and theories arose. . . Many hoped it was a dinosaur. . . Gary Griggs, director of University of California Santa Cruz’s Institute of Marine Sciences, said the skeleton was most likely an extinct Pliocene-era whale.
It would appear that wise water creatures have loved Pleasure Point for eons.
