Dragon Floats New H20 Eyewear Collection

by The Editors on May 8, 2013

Hard to believe it’s taken until 2013 for an action eyewear company to make sunglasses that don’t sink to the bottom of the ocean the second they get fumbled, but that’s exactly what Dragon’s new H20 line is all about.

“The Floatable sunglasses are super functional for me and my friends,” says Shane Dorian. “For people who spend essentially half their lives around the ocean surfing, fishing, boating, stand up paddling or anything else that’s active, knowing you won’t lose your favorite pair of shades if you drop them into the water is key.”

Yes, it is. With these glasses and his inflatable Billabong wetsuit Mr. Dorian is in danger of drifting right out into space. For the official word from Dragon follow the jump.

Readers over 40 who think dressing up means wearing a Hawaiian print shirt and their “good slippas” will be right at home on Saturday, May 11, 2013. For the official word on the auction and the day’s events, follow the jump.

Burton R&D Legend’s Man Cave

by The Editors on May 8, 2013

doyle1Seven Days Vermont did a story on “man caves” in the Green Mountain State and Burton R&D legend Chris Doyle’s garage fit in quite nicely.

Chris Doyle’s shop is the kind of man-space that would drop a 12-year-old boy’s jaw in a heartbeat. Sure, the radio-controlled airplanes in the loft are pretty cool, as are the 15 vintage motorcycles and dirt bikes in various states of repair.

But they couldn’t decide if they were more  impressed with his 1968 Corvette or his wingless ” vintage 1947 single-engine Luscombe airplane.” Us, we’re just impressed.

Billabong Halts Trading For News On Sale

by The Editors on May 7, 2013

billabong_corp-tm.jpgBillabong has placed a “trading halt” on their stock while the action sports fashion world anxiously awaits news of former US Billabong President Paul Naude’s takeover or kickout.

In a statement Billabong said:

Unless ASX decides otherwise, the securities will remain in Trading Halt Session State until the commencement of normal trading on Thursday, 9 May 2013, or when the announcement is released to the market.

It won’t be long now. We’re guessing the takeover will roll right through the approval process.

How Street Skating Looks To Everyone Else

by The Editors on May 7, 2013

700The Onion has decided to take on “amateur skateboarding” with a story titled, Nation’s Amateur Skateboarders Haven’t Landed Trick In 12 Years and it reminded us of how skateboarding must look to people who don’t care. Here’s what they say US Berkeley researchers discovered.

Having completed a long-term analysis of skateboarding activity at every skate park, public plaza, parking lot, and suburban cul-de-sac in the United States, researchers at the University of California reported this week that not one of the nation’s 19 million amateur skateboarders has successfully landed a single trick since 2001. . . The report confirmed that not a single ollie, nollie, kickturn, heelflip, frontside 180, backside 180, or fakie has been landed in over a decade. In addition, 100 percent of handrail grinds resulted in subjects landing on their shoulders while nearby acquaintances laughed at them.

Yeah, we’ve seen those kids, too, but it sounds like The Onion hasn’t watched Street League Skateboarding lately.

Nielson Expos Sold For $950 Million Cash

by The Editors on May 6, 2013

Nielsen Logo-1Nielsen (owners of the Outdoor Retailer and Interbike tradeshows under their Nielsen Expositions wing) got what appears to be a pretty clean exit from the tradeshow business today when they sold Nielsen Exhibitions to a Canadian private equity fund (Onex Coproration) for $950 million, according to a post on Rapaport.

“This is an exciting development in the history of the Nielsen Expositions business,” said David Loechner, the president of Nielsen Expositions. “Onex’ experience and successful track record in executing similar corporate carve-outs and building those divisions into industry-leading businesses position it as a strong partner. We look forward to working with Onex to execute our strategic plan and to continue to grow the business to better serve the exhibitors and attendees who participate in our events, all the while providing a seamless, business-as-usual transition for our clients and associates.”

Wonder who Onex is going to sell it to next year?

Surfer Gets First Shark Bite Out Of The Way

by The Editors on May 6, 2013

TeensurfersharkbiteMichael Adler, a 15-year-old surfer from Fort Lauderdale, Florida is kind of glad he was bitten by a shark while surfing in Melbourne on Saturday, May 4, 2013, according to Fox News. There were 20 holes in the top of his foot, but that’s not the important part.

Adler says he is eager to surf again, despite the attack. . . “Now I know I’m not gonna get bit again so I’m not scared,” he told WSVN. “I mean, how many people get bitten by a shark, twice?”

You mean aside from Florida surfers who say they’re never going to get bit again, Michael?
