Australian Tyler Wright took the Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro over Sally Fitzgibbons today (May 11, 2013) and jumped into the lead of the 2013 ASP World Title race ahead of Carissa Moore. Not a bad day in Brazil for the 19 year old.
“This feels pretty good,” Wright said. “This whole event has been stepping stones for me. I started off a bit shaky and this is my first even where my family is not here with me. Brooke Farris was here looking after me and thanks to everyone for all of their support. After I lost that Round 3 heat I just wanted to catch waves and I stayed busy from then on. It’s just the way it worked out. I just love catching waves. I just kept building and building and I wouldn’t want it any other way. This is just fantastic to come to Rio, I love it.”
For the official word from the ASP follow the jump.

GLM Shows, the parent company of Surf Expo has decided to put the Launch LA project “on hold,” according to a information from the company.
Based on the reviews we received after the first LAUNCH last year, showcasing emerging California lifestyle brands is important. . . We will continue to evaluate the best way to highlight these brands in a venue that maximizes all the resources that GLM brings to the table.
So no July show this summer. Wonder how long this “hold” will last, because we enjoyed the show last year.

Enjoi Skateboards has reportedly pulled a T-shirt design from its website after Ginae Klasek of Phoenix, Arizona started a petition on Change.org claiming the shirt made fun of domestic violence, according to a story in The Guardian.
One of the ads was in the form of a T-shirt titled “The ex-girlfriend”, which depicted a woman with tears and an arm in a sling saying: “He really does love his skateboard more than me.” A different poster showed a male skateboarder with his finger over the mouth of a female mannequin head, as if hushing her, and the slogan: “Where no means yes.”
More than 1,800 people signed the petition and it appears that, after Klasek threatened to march on the company’s headquarters that Enjoi has taken the T-shirt down and enjoyed more mainstream media play than they’ve gotten in a long time. Times are hard, guess they have to take the attention while they can.

This morning (May 9. 2013), while the ASP pros were paddling out at Barra Da Tijuca, Brazil for round one of the Billabong Rio Pro we were stuck trying to figure out the time zone changes and didn’t catch much of round one. But it sounds like it was a pretty challenging day, even for Kelly Slater.
“I saw a bunch of good waves down the beach and just kept that to myself,” Slater said. “You can take off on that foam ball out the back on the reef and get one or two turns and you’ve already got as good a score as you can get on some of the ones on the right side of the scaffolding. Most of the waves this morning have been closeouts, but I figured at some point today it’s going to get good. There were some unbelievable barrels down the beach.”
All of the favorites, except for Taj Burrow, made it through round one and directly into rouund 3. For full results and the round 2 match-ups, follow the jump.

A 36-year-old French surfer who was spending his honeymoon on Reunion Island was attacked and killed by a shark, according to a story on Sky.com.
The 36-year-old French national was in the sea just off the popular beach of Brisants de Saint-Gilles on the west of the island when a shark charged at him twice, prompting a nearby swimmer to raise the alarm when he saw blood on the water, the local prefecture said. . . Lifeguards jumped in the water to fetch the victim, who had lost a lot of blood and was in cardiac and respiratory arrest. They brought him back to the beach but were unable to revive him.
The man’s new bride is reportedly being treated for shock. This is the third person to die from a shark attack on Reunion Island in the last two years. Our thoughts are with the man’s wife, their families and friends.

While we were all awaiting news of the pending Billabong takeover by Paul Naude today (May 9, 2013), the company has requested that their trading halt continue even longer. Here’s what Billabong said in their release:
The securities of Billabong International Limited (the “Company”) will be suspended from quotation immediately, at the request of the Company, pending an announcement with regard to possible transactions affecting the Company, including in connection with the bid process announced on 14 January 2013.
In other words, they’ll let us know when they want to let us know. Until then, there’s no getting out. Oh, and it also looks like VF Corp is back in the buyout mix (Wall Street Jounrnal link via Tiffany) now that Naude’s “exclusivity” period has ended. Wonder how much more time they will need?
