A slim swell forecast saw the 2013 Billabong Pro Tahiti blast on all the way to the finish yesterday (August 18, 2013) in barreling four to six-foot surf at Teahupo’o. And with the help of at least one interesting call from the tower Adrian Buchan was able to better Kelly Slater by 1.04 points to win his second ever WCT event.
“I can’t believe it,” Buchan said. “Kelly (Slater) is incredible and I thought he snatched it for me at the end. I couldn’t go right…but I probably should have. I still can’t believe it. It hasn’t sunk in. What an incredible day though. The sun came out during the last five minutes and it’s all just really special right now.”
With his second place finish, Kelly Slater moved back into lead of the ASP World Tour Rankings, you know, where he’s been for most of his seemingly endless career. Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson are now in second and third. For the official word from the ASP, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

University of California at Santa Barbara History professors Peter Neushul and Peter Westwick have taken some course work from their college class on the history of surfing and turned it into an extremely readable book titled The World In The Curl: An unconventional History of Surfing, according to a story on GrindTV.com.
The World in the Curl: An Unconventional History of Surfing focuses on surfing’s progression from a Polynesian past-time to a billion-dollar global industry. Along the way, it shows how the sport was heavily shaped by the U.S. military, aerospace, and technological advances taking place during the same time period—and how without those influences, surfing as we know it would be dead in the water.
Nothing gives a better perspective on the the inside workings of surfing history than a view from the outside. Click here to buy the book for $18.08 in print or $13.99 on Kindle, click the link for the rest of the story.

Bystanders on shore heard the woman scream, put her on a kayak and brought her to land, said Lee Mainaga, fire services chief at the Maui Fire Department. Her right arm was severed below the shoulder, he said. The limb wasn’t recovered. . . The woman was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. The Billabong Pro Tahiti is on at Teahupo’o and the boys got down to business and through four heats of Round 2 before shutting down for the day. Kelly Slater worked his usual magic and slipped directly into Round 3 by patiently waiting until the final 15 seconds of his Round 1 Heat 5 matchup against fellow American’s Ian Walsh and Brett Simpson.
“I was kind of lucky that one even came in the end,” Slater said. “I blew the best wave of the heat and lost my fins. I had the line I wanted and just lost my fins on the foam-ball and was too far behind to catch up. Brett (Simpson) had a few opportunities and paddled too wide. My waves weren’t that great and I was just trying to make things happen.”
The contest resumes today at 10:00 AM PST (7:00 AM Tahiti time). For the official word (including the rest of the Round 2 match -ups) from the ASP, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]
