Fanning Makes It Four At Quiksilver Pro France

by The Editors on October 4, 2013

Fanningwinssmall

Mick Fanning stuck to his speed surfing guns to survive a non-stop aerial assault from Brazilian Gabriel Medina to win his fourth Quiksilver Pro France on Friday, October 4, 2013. Fanning grabbed the first wave and continue to lay down the solid contest surfing while Medina tried all his tricks. Sadly, for the Medina, he had trouble landing his backflip and several other airs that could have made the difference.

Fanning was beside himself. “I’m pretty emotional. Oh my god. I’ve drawn an ace,” Fanning said on the beach. “I never got into rythymn until this morning. for the guys I had to go through in the contest, this is amazing. And Gabi is such an incredible kid. Even with 20 seconds to go I was still wearing brown underwear.”

Both surfers were relentless during the final cranking out 26 scored waves for the judges to mull over. For the official world from the ASP including complete results, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

ESPN Cuts Global X Games

by The Editors on October 3, 2013

X Game LogoThis didn’t take long. Seems like only yesterday we were saying how there was no reason for ESPN to expand their X Games into the global market because there is no global market for what they do. And now, according to a story on SportsBusiness International it appears they have finally agreed.

An ESPN statement read: “We are proud to have run world-class competitions for both the athletes and spectators; however, the overall economics of these events do not provide a sustainable future path. . . The company remains fully committed to the X Games brand and its full-scale competitions in Aspen, Colorado and Austin, Texas – its newest host city – and we will continue to distribute these premier events around the world.”

You don’t say. It was a nice try though, huh?

Oakley Updates Their Airwave To 1.5

by The Editors on October 2, 2013

Image002-10

Today, October 2, 2013, Oakley is launching the latest update to their Bluetooth connected, heads-up display goggle, the Airwave 1.5. The goggle (which is now for sale in Oakley and Apple.com stores) features a Recon heads-up display allowing users view data as if it were on a 14 inch monitor located about five feet away. What data can viewed on that screen? Pretty much everything you’d need to know while riding, including: current temperature, speed, location, and music control. But the Airwave 1.5, has built in GPS so it will also keep track of vertical feet and where your friends are using Buddy Tracking (if they’re using the Oakley app for iPhone of Android). The display can also notify you to incoming phone calls and texts.

We’re still not sure people need this much data distracting them while they’re plowing their way down the hill, but from what we’ve seen, it works pretty well. The downside: the goggle retails for $649. For the official word from Oakley (and more photos), follow the jump. [click to continue…]
