From home-brewers to homies, Beer Goggles is set to become one of the largest festivals of its kind in eastern BC, a region known for its “big little beers.” Twelve confirmed breweries include stalwarts Nelson Brewing, Okanagan Spring, Tree, Steamworks, Mt. Begbie, Parallel 49, Stanley Park, Central City Brewing and other craft outfits from all over BC. We expect to serve up more than 50 different beers for the tasting event. . . .”Beer Goggles is not simply a beer festival, but a celebration of the craft beer industry,” explains RED Mountain’s Fran Richards, the man behind the mayhem. “All of the hardcore skiers and snowboarders ’round here know the simple pleasure of a fine brew after a day in the mountains, and we wanted to try and, um, bottle that feeling. Well, least until we can all buy craft beer on Etsy…”

US Olympic Halfpiper Danny Davis hasn’t even begun competing and already he’s going for style points with his view of the Sochi Olympic halfpipe, according to Yahoo Sports.
American Danny Davis, one of the sport’s most respected figures, said the pipe’s flat bottom – the area that serves as a transition between the 22-foot-tall walls on each side – is bumpy and full of sugary snow, causing significant problems for riders. Two other sources confirmed Davis’ concerns, with one calling the halfpipe “unsalvageable.” . . . “It’s the Olympics. It should be flawless,” Davis told Yahoo Sports. “What a lame showcase of snowboarding, and what a lame way to treat the athletes.”
Officials are saying they had similar snow problems in Vancouver and pulled it off so we shouldn’t worry. Aside from the judging, organizers appeared to have pulled off slopestyle, guess we’ll all have to pray they can pull off the halfpipe by tomorrow.

Apparently, at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, protesting against Russia’s “gay laws” can be as simple as flashing a unicorn and rainbow glove at the camera following a run, according to a story on Whitelines. They’ve given the title of “first athlete to make a statement on gay rights at the 2014 Winter Olympics” to Dutch slopestyle snowboarder Cheryl Maas.
As she walked away, resigned to the fact she hadn’t made the finals and would have to try again in the semis on Saturday, she thrust a gloved hand into the camera. The glove in question (or rather mitt) was covered in rainbows and unicorns – leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind as to where Cheryl (a happily married lesbian) stands on Vladimir Putin’s recent anti-gay propaganda bill, which outlaws “non-traditional sexual practices” from being promoted in public.
Hopefully, Maas will get the chance to say even more before these games are over.

We just checked out Volcom and Baker’s new “Match Made in the Gutter” collection in person and you know what? It’s done up nice. The line includes two T-shirts, a button-up, belt, twill pants and a lounging shoe with pom pom toes. Huh?
The designers at Volcom and Baker worked with mutual team rider, Dustin Dollin, to come up with a progressive and eye-popping line that represents both Volcom and Baker’s unique perspective on design and skateboarding. . . Dollin was the perfect choice to help curate this collection as he is known for leading a fearless approach to skating, off board antics and fashion.
And it works. This collab is gonna be like Lego x Star Wars for skateboarders. It’s on sale now at Volcom.com and hits stores in March. For the official word from VeeCo, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Garret McNamara’s car sponsor is apparently Mercedes Benz (not bad), but that was only on the road. Now, according to a story on DesignBoom, the company’s ad agency (BBDO Portugal) wanted to get the Mercedes branding into the water with him. And they did that just last week on February 2, 2014 in Portugal.
For the first time, technicians, engineers and designers at mercedes-benz AMG in stuttgart developed a surfboard with a built in telemetry system capable of measuring surfing performance. the board was created specifically for Garrett McNamara’s trademark riding style and tailored for catching big waves.
Looks like the board worked, but we can’t say it was the best wave we’ve seen from Nazaré. And where’s the “telemetry data”? Guess they’re not sharing it just yet. For more photos of the Benz surfboard, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Billabong has reportedly announced that they are considering selling their e-commerce businesses Swell.com and SurfStich, according to a story on MSN Money.
The embattled maker of board shorts and wet suits, which was saved last year by a refinancing deal from U.S. private equity firms Centerbridge Partners LP and Oaktree Capital Management, is looking at strategic options for its SurfStitch and Swell site. It has appointed investment bank Guggenheim Securities to help with the review.
Yeah, why own online retailers when mall stores are doing so very well?
