The largest great white shark caught on the Gold Coast in more than seven years was taken “on a drum line” 300 meters off Greenmount Beach” on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 several hours after the Roxy Pro Gold Coast had concluded, according to a story in the Courier Mail.
Eight female surfers including Stephanie Gilmore competed in the Roxy Pro at Snapper Point just hours before the shark was caught. . . Shark Control Program manager Jeff Krause said board riders were in a potentially dangerous situation on Wednesday being in the vicinity of a great white shark. . The competition finished at 9:15am and the shark was first reported about 2pm.“The successful removal of this dangerous shark from a popular swimming beach was particularly important given the Quiksilver Pro surfing competition currently underway at nearby Snapper Rocks.”
Nice of them to clear things out before the contest gets rolling again, huh? Then again, it is the ocean. (Sidenote: Love it that Australia’s Today Show comes in off the break to Queens of the Stone Age.

Don’t know if there was any information in this clip or not. . . wait, guess the news is that Street League Skateboarding has gone form ESPN 2 to Fox Sports 1. So that’s like moving up a number and dropping a little on the viewers. No worries. We like Fox Sports 1 better anyway. And so should you.

A 21-year-old snowboarder from Pennsylvania died yesterday (Wednesday, March 5, 2014) after hitting at tree at Ellicotville, New York’s Holiday Valley Resort, according to a story in the Buffalownews.com.
“The individual apparently lost control while snowboarding, went off the trail and collided with a tree,” said Jane Eshbaugh, director of marketing at Holiday Valley. “He was transported by ambulance to Olean General Hospital. It is our understanding he passed away at the hospital, and we have no other details.”
Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends.

Yes, the Burton US Open of Snowboarding is still at Vail, Colorado. And yesterday (Wednesday, March 5, 2014) the 32nd running of the big even kicked off with all kinds of action. Jake Burton made one kid’s wish come true, and in the slopestyle qualifiers Jamie Anderson and Stale Sandbech qualified in the top spots. No surprise.
“Today was a really good day for me,” said Sandbech. “The weather was great and it just makes you warm and loose. It’s easier to try big tricks when it’s not icy.”
Mark McMorris qualified 9th. Today? Halfpipe qualifiers going down live. For the rest of the results and the official word from Burton, please follow the jump.

Big mountain dominator Jeremy Jones has added another logo to his helmet in the form of former Japanese electronics giant Sony. Yes, they still exist and are apparently making products. Remember the Walkman? Same company. Guess they even make some kind of video game playing device for people who don’t have iPhones.
What Jones will be promoting is a small POV camera that is apparently the company’s glacially slow response to the GoPro. Footage looks pretty good, too.

ActiveReplay, the action tracking company behind the Trace. Has reportedly landed $2.1 million in seed funding, according to a story on SoCalTech.com.
Details on the funding have not yet been announced. According to the filing, part of the funding came from Allegro Venture Partners, and also included a number of other investors. Active Replay’s CEO is Dr. Anatole Lokshin, a pioneer in developing GPS devices, who was the CTO of Magellan Navigation.
Sounds like perfect timing as they’ve been promising to release the Trace in March 2014. $2.1 million should get a few devices out into the wild, and it would be nice to see one of these “Strava for action sports” devices make it past the vaporware phase.
