Supporting Sara In Her Battle With Cancer

by The Editors on January 7, 2015

2838089 1418757550.8759In December of 2013 The Skateboard Mag co-founder Mike Mihaly’s wife Sara (mother of their three daughters) was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. After her first rounds of treatment the cancer has returned and is now in Stage IV. A friend of the family, Kate Patterson Baldwin, has set up a site on gofundme.com to help the family with their mounting medical expenses. Here’s what Kate says about Sara:

Somehow, even in the face of such giant obstacles, Sara manages to keep it all together with a positive and courageous attitude. She has summoned an undeniable strength that is exemplary and inspiring on all accounts; and, not only is she providing a beautiful example of strength and perseverance for her three little girls, she is, without a doubt, doing the same for me. I strongly believe that if we had more people in the word who could face challenge with the same grace and poise that Sara does, the world might be a gentler and kinder place.

What The Hell Is A BeachGrit?

by The Editors on January 5, 2015

Breachgriddle

Stab magazine founder Derek Rielly and Welcome To Paradise Now Go To Hell author Chas Smith believe that some surfers are still interested in viewing clever, well written groupings of words and photos related to surfing. And for all 11 of you who are interested yet have grown tired of the incessantly sincere sniveling of The Inertia they have created BeachGrit. Here’s how they see it:

BeachGrit is as fearless as it is fun. It does what no other space in surf does because it has seen it all and knows that surfing is light, loose and libertine. Every day is a new day and there is much to explore. Surfing is, after all, the most anti-depressive thing ever!

See? Doesn’t that snappy bit of prose lift your loins like a sandy crack selfie? Apparently, Anastasia Ashley’s literary rump wasn’t driving as many clicks as it used to so BeachGrit has enlisted Ruth Bader Ginsberg (above) as their new “it girl.” Follow the jump for the official word from Rielly & Smith or just click the link and see it for yourself. Surfer Called By God To Fight ISIS

by The Editors on January 2, 2015

Deanparker

While teaching surfing in Costa Rica 49-year-old Dean Parker reportedly “heard God’s call” to fight ISIS, according to a story in the Daily Mail.

An American grandfather has joined the Kurds in the fight against ISIS in Syria after abandoning his idyllic life as a surf instructor in Costa Rica, to wield an AK-47 against the jihadists. . . In an interview with MailOnline, Dean Parker, who has no previous military experience, said he ‘heard God’s call’ to take up arms after watching a heartbreaking TV report about the plight of the Yazidi people trapped on Mount Sinjar by Islamic State fighters.

Parker says he’s going to surf the Black Sea just as soon as they can defeat ISIS. For the rest of the story, click the link.

Medina Wins His First & Last ASP World Title

by The Editors on December 22, 2014

E933Dd3D-1Eaa-45Cc-Befc-A420F4F020A3

On December 19, 2014 on the North Shore of Oahu Gabriel Medina became the first Brazilian surfer to ever win an ASP World Title, he also became the last. Kelly Slater has capped his ASP world title wins at 11. Neither surfer will ever win another ASP world title, because come 2015 the Association of Surfing Professionals will no longer exist. From here on in it’s the World Surf League. But that fact shouldn’t detract from the amazing season Gabriel Medina turned in in 2014.

Medina commenced his historic 2014 season run with an impressive win on Australia’s Gold Coast before posting respectable results in Margaret River and at Bells Beach. Despite a slight stumble at home with a 13th in Rio, Medina rebounding with an emphatic win in Fiji. Medina’s South Pacific form was not limited to Fiji, as the young Brazilian scored a sensational win in deadly conditions at Tahiti’s Teahupo’o over rival Kelly Slater (USA).

But it’s wasn’t until Pipeline that Medina wrapped it all up.

Posting a solid win over lethal wildcard Dusty Payne (HAW) in Round 3 of the Billabong Pipe Masters this morning, Medina successfully eliminated Slater from title contention. Fanning’s elimination in Round 5 by compatriot Alejo Muniz (BRA) sealed Medina’s fate and the capacity crowd at the beach erupted for the young Brazilian.

Congrats, Gabriel. Next year you (and the rest of the top 34) can go after your first WSL World Title. [click to continue…]
