Flow Snowboards Turns Up The Social

by The Editors on January 14, 2015

07B3976A-68F2-467F-95E9-D62C3Bd0E34AIf you play your social game just right you could walk away with a Flow Era Snowboard. It’s the same board that Tim Humphreys, Drayden Gardner, Nathan Jacobson, and Dru Williams rides.

A classic already, the Era is an all-mountain dream board that handles freestyle to pow to groomers. Soft, responsive, agile and just plain fun; the Era is nothing short of perfect. A true twin shape with our I-Rock Hybrid rocker makes pressing a pleasure popping off hits has never been so fun. The sintered base will allow you to hold your speed and the 3-DT sidecut will be your wingman on any run. This is one of Flow’s best boards to date.

All you have to do click around on Flow’s Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ (people still use that?) For the official word from Flow, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Thrasher’s Mike Gilbert On The Cons Project

by The Editors on January 9, 2015

Master skate filmmaker Jon Holland directed this video with Thrasher Magazine digital director Mike Gilbert on the The CONS Project and what Gilbert and the crew hope to communicate to aspiring skateboarding filmers. This is part one of a four edit series.

The four films being rolled out over the next few weeks will show tips on skate filming including editing techniques, follow filming, shot composition, and skating in front of the camera with experts Mike Gilbert, Ewan Bowman, Nick Genova, and Don “Nuge” Nguyen. The video includes footage from a CONS Project Filming Skate Videos workshop Gilbert led last fall.

We could all use a few tips from the pros, right? Truth is, we’d be most interested in hearing some tips from Mr. Holland himself. Maybe next time.

ESM Photographer Joe McGovern Dies

by The Editors on January 8, 2015

B9315791645Z.1 20150108154801 000 Gm39Kdvtm.1-0Joe McGovern, a long-time photographer for Eastern Surf Magazine died almost a week after being pulled unconscious from the ocean at Paradise Beach Park on Sunday, January 4, 2015 according to a story in Florida Today. McGovern was 64.

He died Wednesday [January 7, 2014] at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne surrounded by family and friends. The Providence, Rhode Island native is survived by his wife, three daughters, mother, brother and other family members. . . “It’s a total shock,” said Dick “Mez” Meseroll, the co-owner of the magazine who worked with McGovern to cover surfing and some of the sport’s top events. McGovern was enjoying his annual trip to Brevard to enjoy the warm surf when the accident happened, Meseroll said. . . “He was extremely fit and was once a lifeguard. It sounds like he took a bad fall in the waves. I saw him a few hours before. He came to my house, dropped his bags and the next thing I know I got a call about the accident. I can tell you that a lot of people are shedding tears,” he said.

McGovern never regained consciousness. Our thoughts are with McGoverns friends, family, and the entire ESM family. Click here for ESM’s Joe McGovern memorial page.

Champion San Diego Surfer Dies Of Staph

by The Editors on January 8, 2015

barry_ault

Former US Masters Surfing Champion Barry Ault, 71, died from a staff infection after surfing in San Diego, California the week before Christmas 2014 following rain storms, according to a story on NBC 7 San Diego.

Barry had gone surfing at Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, just two days after a rainstorm. It’s still not clear if that staph infection came from storm runoff into the water that day, as there are several storm drains around Sunset Cliffs that empty into the ocean.

According to other reports, several of his friends also got sick that day, but the others recovered. Sometimes when the waves are that good it’s difficult for all of us to stay out of the water after a storm. Especially when it’s been a place that has so often offered an escape from most everything that troubles. Our thoughts are with Ault’s family and friends.
