Girl Joins The Altamont Capital Gang

by The Editors on February 19, 2015

Girlfounders

The minds behind Girl Skateboards (Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Megan Baltimore, and Spike Jonze) have decided that now is a good time to do a little work with other people’s money. In this case private equity firm Altamont Capital’s money, according to a Kailee Bradstreet story on Transworld Business.

“Our conversation with Altamont began last year,” Girl Co-founder Megan Baltimore says. “We weren’t actively looking for investors when we first met them, but everything they were working on was very interesting and relevant to us. Partnering with them helps us accelerate what we want to do with our brands and what we want to do for skateboarding.”

Girl (and their brands) are joining Fox, Mervin, HUF, Dakine, and Brixton in Altamont’s growing action sporting mall portfolio. Congrats to them. We hope they enjoy the money and use some of it to keep fighting the good fight.

Alto’s Adventure: Snowboarding on iPad

by The Editors on February 19, 2015

Next time we borrow grandma’s iPad it seems we’ll have something to do with it — Alto’s Adventure snowboarding game. The Verge calls this “chill snowboarding adventure” the “next great iPad game.”

But what really sets it apart from other similar games is its style. Alto takes place on an achingly beautiful mountain, one filled with crumbling ruins, dark forests, and icy slopes. The weather and time of day change regularly, and you’ll find yourself chasing (and being chased) by llamas and village elders. It feels like an art game fused with a fun little time waster; like Sword & Sworcery meets Tiny Wings. “We wanted it to be a beautiful experience,” says Ryan Cash, from developer Snowman, “but the gameplay and fun factor matters just as much to us.”

The game is available in the iTunes store for $1.99 and has no in app purchases (thankfully). For a more in depth review, click the link.

Well, this will make you feel like an old industry salt: The Surf Industry Manufacturers’ Association & Board Retailers’ Association is hosting their 18th Annual Surf Summit at the Barcelo Grand Faro in San Jose Del Cabo, BCS, Mexico May 13-16, 2015. Eighteenth? Seriously? Well, if you work in the surf industry mark it on your calendars and please, please, please don’t read too much into the fact that the Surf Summit 18 logo features a skeleton in surf trunks. It’s only a cool graphic. Seriously.

Ancell + Slater = Blackfish Boards

by The Editors on February 17, 2015

Slater Ancell

Kelly Slater and RVCA ANP artist Kevin Ancell got together on a project called #ThePod, which pays homage to the movie Blackfish and friends who have passed.

“After watching the movie Blackfish, I was so moved and perturbed with the wild captures and captive breeding of the Orcas that I felt compelled to paint my boards to mimic their markings,” Slater says. “Kevin and I had been thinking about something we could do together for a couple of years and we happened to be on a trip together just as the idea occurred. So the first board we did was painted in Kevin’s word art to say “Blackfish.” Kevin initially saw it as my project, but asked if he could start adding some of his color into the messaging and the second board was painted in the DFW tag.”

They exhibited at Pow! Wow! Hawaii last Friday, February 13, 2015 in a show that was curated by RVCA Founder, PM Tenore. And we missed it.

Nixon Opens Hong Kong & Sydney Stores

by The Editors on February 13, 2015

Nixon Retail

Nixon is continuing its global retail expansion with stores in Hong Kong and Sydney.

Located in the popular shopping district of LCX on the 3rd floor of Ocean Terminal in Hong Kong and a newly opened Westfield in Sydney’s southside, both new storefronts feature Nixon’s recently introduced Horizon marketing concept. As seen in the newly opened Nixon Paris and Nixon Carnaby locations, the horizon line is a subtle nod to the diverse environments of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding found within the Nixon landscape. This own able design language is more than a literal interpretation of a horizon line. Rather, it becomes the canvas for the Nixon story, allowing us to showcase our perspective and products in a bold, distinct way.

And that’s what time it is. For the official word from Nixon, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

The Flow Darwin ABT Looks Rad

by The Editors on February 11, 2015

Darwin Flow

Just looking at this new Flow Darwin ABT makes us want to go ride some powder, but they say it works just as well on the groomed stuff.

The Darwin ABT snowboard is the quiver filling powder board of choice for Mike Basich, Shin Biyajima and all the Flow team athletes looking to float the powder. . . This quiver filler was designed in collaboration between Dale Rehberg and Basich, Not just a powder hungry bandit, it actually works incredibly well on hard pack as well. The directional shape with its swallowtail and 2 piece ABT was designed around the camber and side-cut to give us “The sickest snowboard ever made.”

Flow is reportedly giving one of these away on February 28, 2015. Click here and you might just get lucky.
