Anyone who’s been watching their Instafeeds lately knows that nearly everyone it skateboarding is on their way to Shanghai, China for the 2017 Vans Park Series World Championships finale which goes down this weekend.
Located in the world-famous Bund waterfront area in central Shanghai, China, the 2017 VPS World Championships will pit skateboarding’s elite pros against select VPS Continental Champions to present the greatest showcase of men’s and women’s park terrain skateboarding talent the world has ever seen in a custom-designed and purpose-built, VPS-certified park terrain competition course. This year’s World Championships park course design highlights a surplus of creative features including a center island extension, a kicker into laid back bank, a round flat bar, big hip into the deep end, huge jump box and more, all of which is built directly next to the mesmerizing backdrop of the Shanghai city skyline.

The Street League Skateboarding (SLS) Nike SB World Tour landed at USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles on Friday September 15, 2017, with Nyjah Huston and Lacey Baker taking the wins. The skate world lost a great human when Preston Maigetter, a staff filmer for Thrasher Magazine, was killed in a single car collision on Vashon Island, Washington the evening of August 30, 2017.
The driver of the car, pro skater Cory Kennedy, 26,was arrested on Thursday morning, August 31, 2017 on suspicion of vehicular homicide, according to a story in the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber. Kennedy was released on Friday pending a charging decision.
An early Thursday morning press release from the King County Sheriff’s office stated that just before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, a homeowner in the area near where Bank Road turns into Thorsen Road, heard a “loud crash” in front of his residence. When sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene, they found a single-vehicle accident where a car had collided with a guardrail and tree — authorities believe Kennedy may have failed to negotiate the sharp curve.
Maigetter leaves behind a wife and two kids. He was 45. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of everyone involved.

As befitting a brand that specialises in discreet, exceptionally expensive subversion, French fashion house Hermès has unveiled a collection of skateboards and longboards. In the same vein as Chanel’s snowboard and Saint Laurent’s stiletto-roller skates (although, admittedly, the latter are just for show), the Hermès skateboard takes an item straight from the street and gives it a luxury makeover.
And it only costs $3,000. Thanks we’d rather roll a Penny.
We didn’t attend Agenda. In fact, we haven’t been to one of the shows for what seems like years now (2014 it seems), but truth up, no one called to say they missed us so guess we’re all good. Luckily, LA Weekly went this year so we got the word on this year’s summer Agenda show from an outside source. Which is a good thing every once in a while.

The layout was such that everyone had to walk through the pop-up shops area first before arriving to either music stage. That’s probably why most of the people arriving to watch the Beat Junkies were dressed in new shirts branded with cartoon characters, or sporting new pairs of limited-edition kicks imported from Japan, or strapped with giant novelty backpacks large enough to carry three average-sized toddlers.
