Tony Hawk is reportedly joining a project to turn Nick Hornby’s book Slam into a Broadway musical, according to Broadway News, because now days every artistic, branded entertainment vehicle needs to be set to music — thank you Lin-Manuel. If you haven’t read the book (and you should) here’s the jist:
“Slam” follows Sam, a teenager with a troubled home life, as he finds out that his girlfriend Alicia is unexpectedly pregnant. He imagines having conversations with Hawk as a way of finding his way through the situation. Though the novel is set in London, the musical will be resetting the story in the U.S.
Skateboarding’s favorite musician Mark Motherbaugh is writing the music and Kyle Jarrow (of Spongebob Squarepants musical fame) will write “the book.” Tony will reportedly create some “skate choreography” for the project and we’ll all be humming along when it comes out.
It’s going to be a right proper party seeing the freshly engagedPaul Fisher flicking his wrists for the huddled, middle-aged masses in Indio, California as Fisher plays night one of Coachella on April 12, 2019. Ya kidding?
Next week (December 13, 2018) Tony Hawk’s mobile game (created by Maple Media) hits the Apple and Google Play stores. It’s called SkateJam and we don’t really know much aside from what we read on 9 to 5 Mac. Here are a few details:
The action-packed mobile experience, available for pre-order now and free to download worldwide on the App Store® beginning on December 13th, captures the essence of Hawk’s legacy – his unmistakable style, influences, and tricks are prevalent throughout the game. Developed by Maple Media, a Los Angeles-based mobile media, advertising and technology company, Tony Hawk’s Skate Jam will set a new bar for authentic tricks, controls and music in a mobile skate game thanks to Tony himself. When Beastie Boy Adam Yauch got into snowboarding it was a big deal to a lot of people. Not that we needed validation from the cool kids, but where he went the hoards followed. Here, in a clip from their new Beastie Boys Book is a little back story on the boys, MCA, and his obsession with snowboarding among other things. Click play for five minutes of Beastie Boys flavor via Soundcloud.
Tom Wolfe, an innovative journalist and novelist whose technicolor, wildly punctuated prose brought to life the worlds of California surfers, car customizers, astronauts and Manhattan’s moneyed status-seekers in works like “The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby,” “The Right Stuff” and “Bonfire of the Vanities,” died on Monday in a Manhattan hospital. He was 88.
We will miss his wit, eye, and especially his monstrously huge novels that we’ve always loved lugging around.
The biggest news in skateboarding over the weekend of May 12, 2018 was that Tony Hawk had rounded the half century mark. And to prove that he’s not slowing down he did this. . . ouch, yet impressive. Here’s to 50 more, Tony. (Follow the jump for a little behind the scenes 720 pain and proof that T-Hawk is not getting soft.)
In the quest to turn snowboarding athletes into bonafide celebrities who can then cash in on their cross-over fame with massive endorsement deals, Dancing with The Stars has been a favorite. (Louie Vito made it five weeks). This season it was Jamie Anderson’s turn to spin across the stage in the arms of a professional dancer. Well, sadly, before anyone could develop any kind of love for America’s Slopestyle darling, she got bounced right off the show without even making it to week two. But, hey, she did it with a smile on her face that suggested she just might be glad this little stunt is over.
Apparently watching things happen in super slow motion is a very popular thing. What people will watch on Youtube.com never fails to amaze us. But here is Tony Hawk. And he’s in slow mo and on his way to a million views. Ta duh!
Ever wondered just how Shaun White transformed himself from a cute little snowboard kid sessioning the Encinitas YMCA miniramp everyday into a resort-owning, rock and rolling business titan with Olympic and ESPN gold medals swinging from his neck? Well, this fall Mr. White will tell it all in his own words and with his own voice as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt releases his as-yet-untitled memoir on Audible.com. Here’s their pitch:
The memoir will be a radical playbook on how to become a champion. A 3-time Olympian and repeat gold-medalist, and winner of an unprecedented 23 X-Games medals, Shaun White has been a fighter and a pioneer throughout his life, overcoming a congenital heart defect, periodic bouts of depression, and an establishment that didn’t take his sport seriously—until he became a legend and a leader whom everyone had to follow. It will be co-written with Neil Strauss, New York Times bestselling author of The Game.
Why shouldn’t Shaun’s memoir be written by the same guy who wrote the book on pick-up artists and Marilyn Manson’s autobiography, and Jenna Jameson’sHow To Make Love Like a Porn Star). Oh, we’re looking forward to this one. For all the official details, please follow the jump.
