Sorry for all the Volcom news lately, but they’ve had it going on this week. Most recently the fact that CEO Richard “Wooly” Wolcott has been elected chairman of the board of directors. He’ll be replacing his father Renee Wolcott Mr. Wolcott will remain on the board. Wooly will also remain CEO. So, we guess that means he’ll be CEO and Chairman of the board.
In other news, Jason “J-Dog” Steris is now president. Congratulations, Jason. Damn, fine ride so far.

A surfer who was out catching some morning surf in Del Mar, CA stumbled on a stash of more than 70 lbs of marijuana hidden under a tarp on a rocky outcropping. Rather that take the No Country for Old Men route he immediately called the sheriff.
Responding deputies recovered approximately 70 and one-half pounds of marijuana,” he said. “More marijuana was found in a trash can in the (beach) parking area.” . . . The origin of the pot, which was bundled in 1-kilogram packages and two large burlap sacks, was unknown, though several people reported seeing a small boat in the area about 3 a.m., the sergeant said.
The surfer’s friends are apparently no longer speaking with him. Just kidding.

In a strangely sad press release ASR Show Director Andy Tompkins reminds the world that DC Shoes is still attending the fall ASR show (the one Sole Tech, Podium, and C1RCA are skipping).
DC, an industry leader in skateboarding footwear and apparel, plans to attend ASR September with over 5,600sqft of meeting room space. The footwear and apparel manufacturer reports doing a significant amount of business with many of the brand’s 2,000 specialty retail accounts at ASR.
Then DC Senior VP of Sales Mark Miller (the guy who appears to like selling DC in CostCo) jumps in to say how important the “specialty store account base” is. But that’s not enough. Global President Nick Adcock chimes in with: “We are committed to trade shows because they are still a destination for our retailers.”
Yeah, it sounds like trade shows are amazing. So amazing, that they have to send out press releases announcing that one shoe company is attending.

Looks like the Volcom kids have opened a new store in the Big Apple. It’s at 466 Broadway (just sound of Grand). Here’s what they said about it.
On Sunday, June 1st of 2008 the long-awaited and highly anticipated Volcom NYC Store opened its doors to the public. . . . After renovations were complete, The Volcom sales marketing team defined our space with unique memorabilia dating all the way back to our inception in 1991. . . . The boys worked tirelessly wheat-pasting murals, hanging custom framed portraits, posters, decks and other miscellaneous items from our athletes and artists. Let’s just say their work wasn’t done until they saw the sunrise.
This is the brand’s 15th retail location.

Sole Technology, Podium Distribution, and C1RCA have all decided that the fall ASR Show is irrelevant to their businesses and have announced that they will not be showing, according to a story on Transworld Business.
Sole Technology Senior VP of Marketing Don Brown says this is a move his company has been contemplating for quite some time. “We really just wanted to be more proactive in reaching out to our retailers and really engaging them in a way that we can’t at ASR,” Brown says. . . . In lieu of the September show, Sole Tech will be focusing its energy—and its half-a-million-dollar budget—on smaller regional shows, as well as having retailers visit the Sole Tech campus in Lake Forest, California.
In a digital world, buying a bunch of space for your employees to sit around in for three days just doesn’t seem as sexy as it used to.

In a recent email from Burton Anne-Flore Marxer says that because of snowboarding she has friends all over the world.
We have a sneaking suspicion that she would have friends all over the world no matter what. In fact, we’re guessing it’s pretty hard for her to find anyone who wouldn’t want to be her friend, no matter what part of the world they live in.
