Cute little bouncy blonde, and American’s best hope for gold in women’s gymnastics this summer, 16-year-old Shawn Johnson has one other dream before heading off to Beijing: she’d like to meet Shaun White.
“I remember watching him in the Winter Olympics and he seemed like a really cool guy, everything he’s been a part of and done, he just seems like a really nice guy that enjoys what he does.”
In what looks to be one of the dullest shows ever to play The Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA four members of Surfline.com’s “forecast team” will appear live from 1-4 pm on July 12, 2008 to show people how to use the website’s forecast tools. What?
For a $10 cover charge, people will get 3 hours packed with surf forecasting info and chances to win lots of cool surf gear from South Coast Surf Shop, Kommunity, Dakine, FCS, and Bulky Boy. The afternoon will include a presentation, plus open Q & A sessions throughout the rest of the day. Each forecaster will have a laptop so they can show people the most efficient ways to navigate the site based on their forecasting needs.
Each forecaster will have a laptop? Someone, please tell us this is a joke?
The Riverside Art Museum is hosting a the Skullphone History Museum featuring work by “underground street artist known as Skullphone.”
Skullphone’s work is displayed in installations depicting a gas pump, a bathroom and a parking meter, as well as throughout the building. Tusman says it’s an attempt to capture the seek-and-find nature of street art — to reflect the fact that, in the wild, Skullphone’s works go up overnight on the backs of billboards, in alleyways and on electrical boxes.
According to The Age, “former tennis star Mark Philippoussis was lucky to escape with his life after he paddled into wild seas off Victoria’s surf coast today.”
Philippoussis was dragged into an area known as the Valley and pummelled by waves until his board snapped. . . He managed to reach a cave, where he spent about two hours, apparently to wait until the tide dropped, while onlookers alerted his girlfriend who was in a nearby carpark.
Locals apparently warned the Australian champ that he probably shouldn’t paddle out at Winkipop Beach, but he went anyway.
If you care about Canadian Olympic snowboarding (and who knows, maybe someone does) then check out Michel “I write advenrture stories for big kids” Beaudry’s column from Whistler’s Pique News Magazine on the Canadian Snowboard Federation’s new “high performance program” director Christian Hrab and the former wrestling coach that went before him.
Us, we couldn’t care less, truthfully. We just feel slight pangs of altruism every once in a while. Oh Canada!
Not much we can say other than that Andy Blumberg sure is on the blogging program. He’s kicking our collectable asses. We hate getting scooped on precious Shaun White footage like this from Nylon Magazine.
Which reminds us: Marvin Jarrett has come a long way since Raygun, Stick, and Bikini, huh?
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 14 years since Kevin Lyman mentioned to Fran Richards that he would like to name his rock tour something similar to one of the magazines Fran was selling ads in (Warp). The magazine is long, long forgotten, but the tour continues to rock the nation of kids that are about as old as it is.
Many people account for the tour’s success to the founder and director, Kevin Lyman, who has an uncanny ability to select a mix of up-and-coming bands, along with older bands re-instating their careers, which continue to draw a youthful audience. In a live interview on site at Pomona, Kevin explained to Label Networks TV that there are several new things to expect from the new crop of up-and-coming bands and tour this summer. “It’s the first day so there are things to work out, but it’s great to see 2,000 kids run over to see Oreska band play, then Beat Union. I think the Aggrolites are going to be interesting to watch this summer, among many others. Once we hit Phoenix, I should have more time to be out in the crowd and check out more bands.”
Check it out, because reading Kathleen’s story is much more comfortable than standing all day under the hot sun in a parking lot full of sweaty teen consumers. Trust us. We know.
Two things we’ve always liked: Vans shoes and O.G. Freedom of Choice video skater Steve Olson. Don’t know why. It’s just the way it is. Somethings will never change.
Now, we’ve got two more reasons to like them both: the Vans Syndicate x Steve Olson low and high top. They look a little Chuck Taylory, but that snakeskin puts them right over the line.
According to The Daily Dish, former pro skateboarder and actor Jason Lee is marrying his pregnant girlfriend Ceren Alkac.
Two months after announcing the model is expecting a baby girl later this year, Lee and Alkac were snapped waiting in line at a Norwalk, Calif., courthouse on Monday.
This kind of coverage should be listed as just one more downside to fame.
Surfer Frank Lourda, 61, a Santa Barbara area contractor was found “floating in the sea off San Augustine’s Beach at Hollister Ranch on Monday, June 30, 2008 according to a story in the Santa Barbara Independent.
Although the official cause of death has not yet been determined, Louda’s apparent drowning comes as a shock for many Santa Barbara architects and surfers as well as to his friends at Hollister Ranch, where he was partial owner of a parcel. He was an avid surfer and appeared to be in excellent health. “He was really very much an alive guy,” said friend and author Nora Gallagher. “People can’t figure it out.”
It’s a total cliche, but if you have to go, there are few spots more beautiful for a surfer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
