The Passion Of The Gay Surfer

by The Editors on September 19, 2008

361614Newcastle, the latest in what seems like a string of gay surf movies coming out, is premiering in its Australian namesake city on October 29.

The film is a the coming-of-age story about three young surfer brothers growing up in Australia, according to a story in The Hearld.

While rising surf star Jesse chases waves and girls and battles his resentful older brother, a former surfing champion, misfit Fergus develops a crush on one of Jesse’s macho mates.

The film was written and directed by American Dan Castle who says he “wove aspects of his own experiences as a surf-mad teen into his Newcastle script.” In a humorous twist of irony, the film is being distributed by actor Mel Gibson’s company Icon Film Distribution.

A Method To Johan’s Assness?

by The Editors on September 19, 2008

Akday3Tomburt 038

After all these years of thinking that Seattle-based C3 Sales Manager Johan Malkoski was simply a crass, belligerent, caustic, ass-monkey we finally learn there is a method to Johan’s world famous assness. It’s all part of a plan, according to an interview on The World of Snowboarding Through Fembot Eyes.

I have a knack for making rough first impressions, most likely it’s the Masshole in me. Or maybe it’s because I like to start at the bottom and work my way up because if you start at the top there’s no where to go but down. I don’t know, I’m working on the problem though.

That is the best news we’ve heard all day. Read the rest of the interview for more insight into the salesman behind the brands Capita, Coal, Union, and Defcon. And wish him luck as he works through his problems. It will be better for all of us if he can. And we mean that in the nicest, most caring way possible.

OG Z-Boy Art Show

by The Editors on September 18, 2008

Zboys

This show at LA’s Crewest Gallery on October 4, 2008 (opening 2:00 PM to 9:30 PM) is something we’re actually excited about. Then again, the Dogtown cross we hand-markered on the wall of our childhood is still there so we’re obviously partial to the work of Craig Stecyk, Skip Engblom, et. al.

The invite only opening party is the night before (October 3, 2008 at 7 PM).

Bangladesh’s First Surfer

by The Editors on September 17, 2008

While claiming to be the first person to do anything in the world is getting more and more difficult, Jafar Alam, 25, says he’s the first Bangladeshi surfer. And now he is sharing his love with the Cox’s Bazar Surf Club which he founded in 2002..

This month he will hold his fourth annual surfing competition, when a group of 15 American surfers will descend on the beach to compete against locals. . . . He now has 48 students, including 12 girls. Although home to a 125-kilometre (78-mile) stretch of unbroken coast, it was only the occasional intrepid international tourist who would test the waves, he said.

It would probably be an easy contest to win. Better start packing.

Tony Hawk Gets Conde Nasty

by The Editors on September 15, 2008

Portfolio.com checked in with T. Hawk and he says he’s not afraid to “get his hands dirty.”

Tony Hawk is rich and chief executive of his own company, but that doesn’t mean he’s changed all that much from the skateboarding kid with a junk food diet. In fact, it’s something he says makes him a better C.E.O.

SkullCandy’s Metallica Collab Gets Wrecked

by The Editors on September 15, 2008

MetallicaOne of the new collabs that the SkullCandy sales crew was excited about at ASR was their new Metallica headphones. But they probably were hoping on a little better reception than the one gadget site Gizmodo just gave them:

Metallica Headphones Would Have Been Awesome in the ’80s Before We Knew What Dicks Metallica Were . . . Skullcandy and Metallica have teamed up to create these absolutely metal headphones, showing the world just how into a burned out, old-man rock band you are.

Kind of how we were feeling when we heard about it. But hey, think how many more people know what SkullCandy is now?

Zumiez Gets the PJ Downgrade

by The Editors on September 15, 2008

Analysts at Piper Jaffray & Co. downgraded Zumiez today saying that the companies shares have “surpassed our target objective” and are “trading essentially in line with the long-term earnings growth rate” and they’re giving Zumez a “neutral.”

We expect shares to trade in range into the 1H of 2009 and would recommend adding to positions on sector pullbacks – longer-term, ZUMZ offers a superior investment profile. Our 2-3 year outlook remains positive, tied to square footage growth, solid category trends, and the company’s ability to orient its merchandise to evolutions in lifestyle cycles. We’ve re-set our 12-month price target to $18/share based on 20x FTME EPS (FQ4-FQ3), in line with the company’s LT earnings growth rate.

Sure, fine.

Skate Study House LA

by The Editors on September 15, 2008

Astro Small-1We wrote about Gil Le Bon De Lapointe and Pierre Andre Senizergues’ Skate Study House back in February, but the mid-century modern skate project has finally made it to the LA Times.

I’m the artist, and he has the money to do it,” De Lapointe says. “Pierre gives me inspiration, he pushes me to find ideas and concepts, new ways to use the skateboard. The skateboard has given him all his success, so he wants to give that back.”

Seems the Home & Garden section just can’t get enough of Pierre Andre lately.
