According to the horror movie site Dread Central the Norwegian director Roar Uthaug’s snowboard slasher film Cold Prey may be released in North America on DVD soon. Here’s a bit of their review :
Five youngsters go up into the mountains for some snowboarding goodness. When one of their own is injured in a mishap, the group seeks shelter in an abandoned ski resort. Big mistake! As bad luck would have it, there’s serial killer on the loose and he’s determined to turn these unsuspecting kids into his next sport.
Sounds a lot like a “promotional trip” we went on once.

By edging Silvana Lima of Brazil in the final of the 2008 Beachley Classic 14-year-old Australian Tyler Wright became the youngest woman ever to win an event on the Women ASP.
In winning the final 13.64 to 12.84, Wright beat the record of Stephanie Gilmore who won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in 2005 at the age of 17 . . . She emulated Gilmore’s 2006 effort of winning the Beachley Classic after grabbing the wildcard spot in the main draw by winning the trials. . . . “I wanted to win the trials and get into the main event, but when I went to the main event I wanted to go all the way just as Steph did in 2006,” Wright said.
Congrats, Tyler. Way to rock the old crew.

One of the green tickers up in the right hand corner this afternoon was Volcom even though it took what the Orange County Business Journal called “a wild ride” today. They’re saying VeeCo closed this Friday up because of a report by an analyst who said:
Volcom is in a position of strength boasting a balance sheet with no debt, approximately $80 million in cash and clean inventory levels,” Gallacher wrote. “While orders are weak from a shrinking addressable market, Volcom is one brand that continues to gain market share.”
Then again, the only companies in the space to not finish up today were PacSun, Billabong, and Globe. So maybe it had more to do with the market than with what Caris & Co. analyst Claire Gallacher had to say about it.

Wasserman Media Group is ramping up to launch another Sportnet.com site with Snowboarder.com. They apparently picked up former Future Snowboarding web editor James Sullivan and plan to open for business in the next couple weeks.
For a look at exactly what Wasserman is building click the Sportnet.com site and you’ll see that they are not fooling around in the online space. They’ve been busy lately building a pretty deep collection of online properties that are ripe for picking up online ad dollars in the future.

While we know Ken Block as the founder of DC Shoes, more and more people are being fans because of his rally driving (they even ask for autographs). Outside Magazine’s Mark Anders goes for a ride in Ken’s car and then writes about it.
I may screw around a little to show you how good the braking is,” says my driver, Ken Block, over a helmet-to-helmet communication system as we roar down a narrow dirt road. It’s a warm June afternoon in northern Pennsylvania, the day before the state’s Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally. “Other than that,” adds Block, “I’m just going to go flat out.”
Yep, he’s a 100 percent kind of guy, isn’t he?

Whistler’s Ride of Your Life competition to see who will be the first to ride their new Peak 2 Peak gondola has one winner so far: 90-year-old George Huxtable says he “can’t wait to ride the new Peak 2 Peak Gondola” according to a story on Canada.com.
“I haven’t stopped jumping up and down since I heard,” said Huxtable, who rarely misses a day of the skiing season. “I have skied since I was four years old and I have been on every contraption that man has invented to go up the mountains easily and then fall down.”
There is room for 19 more for that first ride into the abyss. For nomination forms and contest rules go to www.whistlerblackcomb.com/gondola. Us, we’re staying on the ground. They say it’s totally safe, but we’re not interested in it being the last ride of our life. George, on the other hand, seems to have no problem with that possibility.

With the markets crashing, what better time for companies to invest in themselves. This appears to be the rationale of the Nike board of directors as they approved a four year plan to buy back $5 billion in Nike common stock.
We are pleased to extend Nike’s track record of returning value to shareholders through sustained share repurchases,” said Mark Parker, NIKE, Inc. President and CEO. “Over the past 10 years, NIKE, Inc. has returned $5.5 billion to shareholders through the repurchase of more than 157 million shares. This new share repurchase program demonstrates our continued confidence in Nike’s long-term growth prospects and financial strength.
