Woman Sues Skateboard Co. For Husband’s Death

by The Editors on February 24, 2009

Waialua, Hawaii resident Clinton Patterson fell from his electric skateboard in July 2008 and died five days later from his injuries. Now his wife Jennifer is suing the “California-based motorized skateboard manufacturer and its Hawai’i distributor,” according to a story in the Honolulu Advertiser.

The lawsuit alleges that the wheels of the board came in contact with Patterson’s feet or the board, causing an abrupt change in speed and direction, effectively throwing him off the skateboard. The suit claims that the board was poorly designed and built. . . .The electric skateboards are manufactured and sold by Chase Boards LLC in Orange County, Calif. The lawsuit also named Bionic Wheels LLC, a Honolulu-based distributor of the product, as a defendant.

Sad story all the way around.

Reripping Surfboards Into Concrete

by The Editors on February 23, 2009

Green-Surfers600 T350Meghan Dambacher and Lisa Carpenter of Solana Beach, California wanted to start a business in the surf industry. First they started a website that helped surfers buy, sell, and trade surfboards called Rerip.com: reduce, reuse, reride. But they wanted to do more. Now they have according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The pair partnered with a Los Angeles-based think tank to find a use for unwanted, often toxic, surfboards. Though the research is in the early phases, they have discovered that the boards can be recycled and used to create nonstructural concrete. They’ve been given the green light to use their “Surfcrete” in lightweight capacities, and are starting by using it in landscaping projects. . . . Dambacher and Carpenter have made deals with the city of San Diego to place surfboard recycling bins at city landfills, and the Patagonia Waterman Store in Cardiff by the Sea has agreed to keep a surfboard recycling bin on the premises as well. Other dropoff sites are forthcoming.

See, green marketing really works. Not well enough for Meghan and Lisa to quit their day jobs, but well enough to get a story in the newspaper.

“Gangbangers” Moving In On Park City

by The Editors on February 23, 2009

Look like the pristine, white, mountain town of Park City in Utah’s Summit County in general is noticing an increase in crime thanks to an invasion of gang members, according to as story titled: Gangbangers Aren’t Boy Scouts, on Mountainnews.com.

Despite Park City’s playground image, it may be time to start locking doors and windows. . . An investigative report in the Salt Lake Tribune claims there are now 120 documented gang members from 20 gangs, with ties to Summit County. Another 60 people have been tagged as “persons of interest.” That’s up nine fold from a year ago. Further, 75 percent are predominately Latino, with many coming from California. “Their families move here for employment,” says Burton. . . “Fifty percent of Park City’s gang members live in Salt Lake City and have jobs in Park City or Summit County,” said Burton. “They take construction jobs or resort jobs or have friends up here.” Burton says some gang members work in the tourism industry as hotel shuttle drivers to make drug sales easier.”

Apparently, racism is still alive and well in Utah. At least they’re not blaming this on snowboarding.

Lewis Samuels’ Post Surf Outpost

by The Editors on February 23, 2009

PostsurfSurfline’s Lewis Samuels, popular as the author of Surfline’s ASP Power Rankings launched his own blog a couple months ago. It’s called Postsurf.com. The site culls up out-takes from Samuel’s paying gig at Surfline, original reporting, and goofy think pieces. Here’s what Lewis says about it:

In the grand tradition of morally-ambiguous, surf-lust inspired schemes, I’m launching this site: PostSurf – A place for myself and other Surf Culture iconoclasts to mull over the act, after the act is finished. . . . This site is based on a blind faith that there are many other surfers out there who are dissatisfied with the current state of the surf media. . . . I’m trying to make things better (or much, much worse depending upon your perspective).

Good, honest, insightful, funny writing about surfing is always in short supply and chances are that Postsurf.com will occasionally contain some. That’s why we’ve added the site to our Surf Links and our RSS feeds. Check it out.

Wahoo’s Fish Taco’s Turns 20

by The Editors on February 23, 2009

B78472478Z120090222184111000Gv6Glsvm1 LgUsed to be that it wasn’t a real amateur snow, skate, or surf event if Wing Lam wasn’t there handing out Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, but now he’s handing them out for a 20-year-old business. Hard to believe.

Yesterday, Ryan Sheckler joined the Wahoo’s Fish Tacos crew to celebrate their birthday at the original store in the heart of Orange County’s surf ghetto, according to a story in the OC Register.

Wahoo’s co-founder Wing Lam greeted those who lined up for the event. Lam and his brothers and Wahoo’s co-founders, Eduardo Lee and Mingo Lee, were joined by Steve Karfaridis, their business partner since 1990, at the celebration. . . . “When we started, Wahoo’s was all about bringing our love of surf and food together to create something unique we could share with our family and friends,” said Lam, who first encountered fish tacos while on a surfing trip to Mexico. “We had no idea we’d still be around 20 years later, and we would have the opportunity to support local charities that mean so much to us.”

Happy Birthday, Wahoo’s! Thanks for all those tacos over the years.

Surfer Body-Slammed By Shark

by The Editors on February 23, 2009

0,,6500701,00Glen Lockery was surfing with friends last Wednesday at Shelly Beach Australia when he got slammed by a shark according to The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Lockery was waiting for a wave, watching his mates paddle in, when he was attacked. . . . “I was sitting out the back on my own and just got hit from below,” he said yesterday. It was a massive impact that flipped his surfboard up to hit him in the face. Mr Lockery caught a glimpse of the shark’s girth – about twice as wide as his surfboard. “People have told me that when it comes from the deep it is either a great white or a tiger. It lifted the board and broke the nose,” he said.

And he escaped with only a broken nose on his surfboard.

1982Slidergraphic2

SkateDaily.net just reminded us that Thrasher Magazine has put year two up on their website in it’s entirety. They’re just scans (so they don’t Google well) but every page from every mag is there. The kids can laugh and the old guys can re-live the glory days of 1982.
