Electric Pig “the UK’s fastest growing tech news site” has alerted us to the fact that Skullcandy’s Snoop Dogg Skullcrusher headphones come in “gang colours.” Where you from, g?
What’s got us worried though is the blue bandana design: that’s the colour of infamous LA street gang the Crips, who Snoop Dogg was a proud member of in younger years. So much so that he even rapped about it on one song: “I keep a blue flag hanging out my backside/ But only on the left side, yeah that’s the Crip side.” For real. Watch yourself if you wear these Snoop Dogg headphones on the east side, or just buy the black version.
Yeah, you better watch yo’ self at least until the Bloods version comes out, homie.

Kellan Lutz the lead vampire from the crazy popular Twilight film had a little confession to make in the LATimes. Apparently, he likes to snowboard.
Kellan told the Dish Rag that he was going snowboarding this weekend. . . “I love snowboarding, but I can’t tell that to the studio because I’m not supposed to be snowboarding just before shooting.”
This little blurb is for the thousands of bookish, teen girls who frequent our site. You’re welcome.

Yesterday, while strolling the isles of our local Walmart in search of storage bins and Giant Cheetos we noticed some attractive women’s monokinis. They were from some brand called Op and selling for $20.
It got us thinking: what is the difference between a $20 Op bikini and an $78 Roxy suit? Aside from mean girl scorn all we could come up with was marketing. For people who don’t mind wearing a Walmart bikini (and there are millions of them) there is no reason to spend four times as much.
So last night when TransWorld Business and Shop-Eat-Surf were tweeting away about how the La Jolla Group was doing a special Rusty line for J.C. Penney we had to chuckle. Of course they are. And so is Ryan Sheckler and Zoo York. Because if you’re just in the game to get paid there is really is no reason to protect your distribution. If Op is any indicator this could be the biggest sales year ever for all three companies. And what is wrong with that? You know, aside from everything. . .
For the latest on the J.C. Penney action fashion coup follow the jump.

After all Tony Hawk’s recent twittering about going to Ireland and flying with his baby on the plane, and dropping free decks out all over the world, we never figured out what Tony and family were actually doing in Ireland. Not, that is until we were perusing Celebrity Baby Blog. Only then did we learn that Mr. Hawk was in Ireland to accept a prestigious award.
Professional skateboarder Tony Hawk poses with wife Lhotse Merriam Hawk and daughter Kadence Clover, 9 months, on Friday in Ireland. . . In the country to accept the James Joyce Award from the Literary and Historical Society of the University College Dublin, Tony skated with students at the school after receiving the honor.
The award is given to “those who have achieved outstanding success in their given field.” Tony joins Monty Python’s Micahel Palin, Writer Salman Rusdie, UN Weapons Inspector Hans Blix, The Who’s Roger Daltrey, politician Jesse Jackson and Tony’s business partner Will Ferrell (among others) on the list of winners. We don’t believe it possible to come up with a more eclectic bunch. But congratulations, Tony.

As if the Maloof family isn’t doing enough for skateboarding with their annual $450,000 prize purse Maloof Money Cup at the Orange County Fairgrounds, they’ve also a foundation called The Maloof Skateboarding Assistance Foundation which appears to be run by a “foundation management” company based in Las Vegas, Nevada called Coaching Charities.
According CoachingCharities.com The Maloof Skateboarding Assistance Foundation is a “501(C)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to professional skaters who suffer catastrophic injuries arising from skateboarding events.” In a USA Today story Joe Maloof explained the background for the charity.
“There’s tremendous risk in these contests,” he says. “They’re performing tricks that only the world’s top athletes have the ability to complete. We had a duty to take the lead in taking care of our own. . . “These aren’t just kids. There are a few 15- or 16-year-olds, but most are ages 19 to 35, the same age range as NBA players.”
Do people really care about skateboarders? At the Maloof Family of companies they do. And if they can get some tax relief at the same time, even better.

Our bromance with Vans looks to see no soon end as the footwear giant just relaunched their Vans Customs site. This means anyone can start with fresh white pair of Eras, Slip-ons, or Old Skools and then jack them up until their eyes bleed.
After 20 minutes of making all kinds of customs we finally settled on the new Vans x Boardistan Old Skool. We dare you to find a shoe more delicious that this. Seriously. . . impossible.

What does the RS stand for? Real Sucky. Okay, couldn’t pass that one up. Sorry. All serious now. Ryan Sheckler, Inc. has teamed up with Wicked Fashions, Inc. to deliver a line of “graphic t-shirts, hoodies, thermals, woven tops and skate-fit denim for both Young Men and Boys, all of which mirror Sheckler’s signature style.”
“Skateboarding is my life and skating in something comfortable and stylish is a must. Ultimately, my goal is to take the clothes that my friends and I enjoy wearing and make them available to a larger audience at an affordable price,” says Sheckler. Retail prices for the line will range from $15 – $55 for Young Men and $12 – $48 for Boys.
RS By Sheckler (which joins Southpole in the Wicked fashion stable) drops just in time for the fall back-to-school buying season and will be available at major, leading retailers in July. Because major, leading retailers is where the mass market shops and the mass market is where the mass money is. Word. [click to continue…]

In the hunt to find a reason to pay for Surline’s “premium subscription” the wave forecasting site is rolling out a new “HD surf-cam experience” for those who just aren’t getting enough wave detail on the free cams.
Surfline’s founder Sean Collins says, “In March 2009, Surfline introduced the very first live HD Surf Cam from Surfline headquarters in Huntington Beach. Using a 16:9 format and high-resolution detail, the video streaming quality is excellent, and viewing the online camera is as if you are actually on location and watching the waves from our office.”
Sure, eventually all surf cams (and cameras in general) will be high definition, but are we really going to pay to see Newps in HD? Nope. But if we were already paying it would be a nice upgrade.

Surfersvillage and Global Surf News have always bummed us out a little. Their “we post everything and don’t care who we steal it from” mentality made for some great fun in the early days as online editors at certain surf magazines delighted in posting completely bogus stories just to see how quickly the seemingly irony impaired minds behind Global Surf News would pick them up and run with them. Remember the Rip Curl Search at Swami’s story?
But now, with The Surfing Yearbook, Surfer’s Village has done something that we think will become standard for most publications in the action sports media space (if they’re smart). They have collected a year’s worth of posts from their websites, added some great photos, and a bit of commentary and perspective and are releasing it all in a 240-page illustrated coffee table book edited by surf journalist Phil Jarratt. Here’s what he said about it:
“What we’re aiming to do with The Surfing Yearbook is to present a fully-rounded picture of surfing that will appeal to everyone in the sport, culture and industry, from the lowliest grom surfing in his first amateur comp to the high-rolling CEO of the biggest surf corporations. We’re targeting the grom first because we know the CEOs will follow.”
We haven’t seen the $65 book yet (the official launch party is April 9, 2009 at Bells), but the idea seems perfectly timed.
