NYC’s Uptown School of Skate

by The Editors on June 14, 2009

Nyc SkateschoolFor $65 a hour Jennifer Willis and her younger brother David will teach anyone in Manhattan (and New Jersey, too) to skateboard. In fact, David claims he can teach a 40 year old to ollie inside an hour with their Uptown Skate School.

In an instructional video he shows students, David explains: “What you’re going to do is you’re going to bend your knees, kick down on the tail with your back foot, and slide your front up simultaneously as you jump. … When you come down, you bend your knees, so that way you have more balance so you can ride it out.” . . The siblings offer lessons covering the basics of riding to perfecting complicated tricks, and give half-day skateboard tours for $200.

In their first year of business the duo reportedly made $7,500. Sounds like they’re going to have to franchise.

Putnam’s Gets Audi Plowed

by The Editors on June 13, 2009

PutnamsPutnams Ski and Snowboard Shop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire got plowed by an Audi SUV at 2:40 AM today when a teen driver lost control of his car and slammed into the front of the shop.

Police said it appeared the Audi SUV was traveling west on Lang Road at high speed when it failed to stop at the Lafayette Road intersection, and crashed into the ski shop at 2998 Lafayette Road. . . Portsmouth Police Lt. Rodney McQuate said the crash caused “quite extensive” damage, including damage to the building’s cement foundation.

Four teens were in the car and all four were taken to the hospital, two in serious condition. The teens were apparently celebrating their graduation from high school. SeaCoastOnline is reporting that the driver, Mercer Smith, 18, is still in the hospital and:

“. . . was arrested and charged with three felony counts of driving while intoxicated, one count of aggravated DWI and a count of DWI. Lt. Mike Schwartz said Smith was arrested at an undisclosed hospital, posted $1,000 cash bail and was instructed to notify police when he is released so an arraignment can be scheduled.

Porn Stars Present TW Skateboarding Awards

by The Editors on June 12, 2009

Alektrablue MikaylamendezIf you weren’t at the Transworld Skateboarding Awards tonight at The Avalon in Hollywod you missed Wicked Pictures contract superstars Alektra Blue and Mikayla Mendez, according to a story on Adult Industry News.

With this in mind, it’s all the more fitting that these brunette beauties are kicking off their upcoming Erotica L.A. 2009 appearances by presenting trophies tomorrow evening at the 11th Annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards at the Avalon in Hollywood. 2009 AVN nominated director Van Styles – whose longtime association with the skateboarding community led to the company’s involvement – will be in attendance as well.

Pornstars are cool, but we all know that if Morrissey had been the trophy boy there would have been a lot more skaters fainting in the isles.

by The Editors on June 12, 2009

Rob Dyrdek’s movie Street Dreams opens today and the LA Times kicks down the back story that we’ve heard before, plus something we didn’t know: that the film was anti-inspired by one of the Baldwin brothers.

“One of my good friends told me that one of the Baldwin brothers had just sold a movie about skateboarding,” Dyrdek says. “I’m like, ‘This is ridiculous. How can someone make a movie about skateboarding who knows nothing about it?'”

Good point. From what we’ve heard Street Dreams is actually pretty good. For the complete list of theaters click the link.

White Pointer Cruising Pambula

by The Editors on June 11, 2009

A group of teens from “the New South Wales far south coast” are going to keep surfing even though they spotted a big white pointer shark in the surf zone, according to a story on ABC News.

“The young surfers came within a metre of the 5m to 6m shark that has been sighted between Merimbula’s bar and Pambula Beach over the past week,” the story said. . . “As the boys said, if it’d wanted to eat them, they couldn’t have done anything about it”, he said. . . “So it was obvious that the shark saw them and didn’t realise it was dinner time, I suppose, which is obviously a great thing.”

Yeah, damn great logic, we reckon.

As for the Target clothes, they maybe cheap, but they’re made in the same kinds of Chinese factories that make all the major label stuff, so really, what is the difference?
