Miss California Tami Farrell was just one of the celebrities to get play at Billabong’s Design For Humanity event at Avalon on June 17, 2009. But the focus was not on surfing or saving the environment. She had words of advice for The Hills’ Stephanie Pratt.
“I think with all of the pressure with her family and the fame and all of the things that are always going on with them and the cameras, [the story is] just a reminder to get outside from all of that, focus on the actual reality, not the scripted reality and see that she’s a beautiful young girl,” said Farrell.
Luckily, we have no idea what she is talking about.

June 21 is Go Skateboarding Day, but we’re thinking it would be a good idea to get a run at it and skateboard everyday until then and be ready:
Skateboarders everywhere will show their love and support for skateboarding by holding fundraisers, contests, protests nad demos. They’ll skate across cities, gather in skateparks, stream into their local skate shop and some will even revel in the solitary act of skateboarding alone at their favorite spot, all bringing together the skateboarding community in the grind heard around the world.
Check out the GoSkateboardDay.org website for the official countdown clock and complete listings of event around the globe (all on an interactive Google Map). Or click here for some GSD trivia with The Skateboard Mag. Or click here to see what the pros are doing (according to Fuel TV).

A group of Florida investors have purchased Active Ride Shop out of bankruptcy for $5.2 million, according to a story in the Press Enterprise.
A limited liability company called Active Sports Lifestyles USA emerged as the winner among five bidders in a Tuesday auction ordered by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Riverside. Attorney Marc Winthrop, who conducted the auction, said the buyers plan to keep all of Active’s operations intact, including its Mira Loma headquarters and warehouse, as well as its 21 Southern California stores.
Zumiez, who had expressed interest in the retail chain, was not even among the final bidders. “The sale is expected to be completed by the end of the month, Winthrop said.”

Great overview of urban skateboarding, cops, and specifically Philly’s Love Park in a great story by Catherine Caperello in the Philadelphia Weekly, titled: Enemies of the Skate.
Ever since skateboarding was banned from public places in Philadelphia back in 2002, the rules of the cat-and-mouse game between cops and skaters has been simple: The cops come and the skaters run. In the past, when skaters were apprehended, officers just removed the bolts from the wheels, preventing the owner from riding. Sometimes cops would break the boards or make a kid do a trick to get their board back. Worst-case scenario, skaters were arrested or ticketed or verbally reprimanded.

Pacific Sunwear today announced that former Vans President Gary Schoenfeld is their new CEO effective June 29, according to a story on the Wall Street Journal.
The leadership change at the teen retailer follows calls earlier this year from a shareholder group for the resignation of former CEO Sally Frame Kasaks, who will also step down as chairman. . . Many teen-apparel chains, once considered fairly resilient during economic downturns, have suffered in the recession as mall traffic has thinned.”We have a lot of work ahead to get our business turned around, yet I am very enthusiastic about our long-term prospects to be a favorite with our customers and create value for our shareholders,” Schoenfeld said.
Maybe Adrenalina was right?

We’ve got to wonder what NBC/Dew Tour has planned with this latest announcement: Adio Footwear founder Chris Miller has just been named Chief Creative Director of Alli’s digital, consumer product, and creative functions according to a Tripp Mickle story in Sports Business Daily.
Chris is the perfect person for the job. We just hope he can survive the realities of dealing with television networks and the people who run them. That is one tough crowd.

Congrats to Marty Thomas for leaving the Action Sports Group and getting back to Hawaii to work with Randy Rarick on The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Seems like a perfect fit.
“We’ve come a long way in 27 years and Marty is the latest testament to that fact,” says Rarick. “The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is pretty much a year-round operation these days, from planning to execution, and Marty will be an important addition to the executive team as we continue to grow the series for future generations of surfers and surf enthusiasts around the world.”
Mr. Thomas will be the Managing Director of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and be responsible for directing ” aspects of the series: pre-promotion, execution of events, and liaison between the North Shore community, contest surfers and ASP staff.”

We used to think there was really no good place for stand up paddlers to practice their art. That was until we saw this story in the Salt Lake City Tribune about SUPing on the Great Salt Lake.
Stone and fellow trainer, Greg Gbrow, offer clinics for $10 from noon to 2 p.m. every Saturday at the Great Salt Lake Marina State Park. Boards can be rented for $20 an hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Private lessons are available for $40 an hour on Saturday and on Sunday. Rentals or lessons for other days are arranged by appointment. The company occasionally holds lessons at Saltair.
Truth is, we can’t think of a better place in the world for all the SUP’ers to go and paddle, aside from maybe The Salton Sea. . .
