Croc And Gators In Cocoa Beach Lineup

by The Editors on June 26, 2009

47717877Florida surfers have to put up with a lot. No waves, hurricanes, and sharks, but this week they had even more weirdness lurking in the lineup.

A rare American crocodile was captured at the Cocoa Beach Pier last Friday and there have been at least two separate alligator sightings in the ocean this week. One of the reptiles left its tracks in the sands of Satellite Beach. . . On Saturday, Jeff Scabarozi, the Brevard lifeguard chief, went to the Third Street North beach in Cocoa Beach. Aboard a personal watercraft, he rode within two feet of a swimming gator.

What next? Cougars in the parking lot?

Bad day in Tinsel Town. Michael Jackson has reportedly died of cardiac arrest June 25, 2009 just hours after Farrah Fawcett. Jackson was also photographed on a skateboard, though, honestly, he looks like he was having fun on the roll.

Gomez Sells Sessions And Stays

by The Editors on June 25, 2009

SessionsJoel Gomez has sold the Sessions brand and trademark to a new company that is backed by Samsung America, according to press release on TransWorld Business. The new company will, not surprisingly, be called Sessions, LLC and will continue to do the same thing they’ve been doing only now they’ll be doing it with someone else’s money.

“Even in these difficult times, Cindi and I felt strongly that, with the right business model and team, we could capitalize on over 20 years of experience and brand equity” said Joel Gomez in a statement. “Cindi and I have great confidence in the viability of this brand. We have a strong and experienced team and with Samsung as a partner, we now have the necessary capital to assure a smooth transition and continued success.”

One more reminder that in these economic times there’s nothing better than a big, fat paycheck. Follow the jump for the entire press release.

Dakine Gets The Mobile Web

by The Editors on June 25, 2009

Photo-4While we’re no fans of super flaired Flash websites, if a website owner is going to over-load their regular site with Flash graphics and other wiz-banglia, then the least they can do is build out a little mobile site for those of us who are riding the web with our phones all day. That’s exactly what Dakine has just done and the site works really well.

A newly launched, interactive site gives users access to DAKINE goodies while on the go. Content is broken down into categories including snowboard, ski, surf, skate, bike, windsurf, kiteboard, girls and music. An abbreviated version of DAKINE’s website, the mobile site, www.DAKINE.com/mobile, is compatible with most media rich-enabled cell phones.

In fact, if we were going to bookmark Dakine’s site on our home rig, we’d probably link up to the mobile site because it’s that much easier to use.

Farrah

Farrah Fawcett died this morning at 9:30 AM. She was 62 years old. No one who didn’t skateboard has ever made skateboarding look cooler than she did. . . Thanks for the memories.

Skateboarding 700 Miles For Charity

by The Editors on June 25, 2009

HatwellRaising money for good causes is a wonderful thing. But sometimes we wonder why so many people choose to pointlessly roll around on their skateboard as a way to do it.

The latest example: for the next two months Laura Hatwell will be skateboarding 700 miles through Scotland to raise money for a charity called Help For Heroes.

After seeing what help for heroes does and the difference they make in people’s lives it’s a no brainer for me. I have to help them.

She hopes to raise £500 for the organization that helps Great Britain’s war wounded. Couldn’t she raise more money if she just got at job?

The Surfer On Air France Flight 447

by The Editors on June 24, 2009

Drrommelsurf677According to a story on Surfermag.com one of the passengers of Air France Flight 477 which crashed into the Atlantic ocean on June 1, 2009 was a Brazilian orthodontist who was an avid surfer. His name was Jose “Rommel” Souza.

Souza was accomplished both in and out of the water, as he spoke four languages and had studied in both Brazil and Paris. But his surfing may be remembered most. “Perhaps one of his most memorable rides was at Uluwatu on a huge day,” said Gaunt. The wave quadruple overhead, he caught it right at the peak and rode it for a kilometer and a half. “He rode the wave so far he had to get a motorbike back from Padang beach,” said Gaunt.

Mavericks Window Opens Even Wider

by The Editors on June 24, 2009

Mavericks-Tm1After a year of no Marvericks contest it seems everyone is doing everything they can to make sure the event goes off this year. Yesterday, organizers announced that the contest window would now open on November 1, 2009.

Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling summed up the excitement, saying, “We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s big-wave contest season will begin earlier than ever before. We have long understood the importance of increasing the size of the contest window, but haven’t been able to do so. Last season’s events further highlighted how valuable a November opening date can be. Now, thanks to the support of everyone involved with the contest, we will make the November opening a reality.”

Worst Anti-Skate Ordinance Ever

by The Editors on June 24, 2009

Kennebec, Maine may have the worst anti-skateboarding ordinance ever to be passed by a City Council. Check it:

The current city skateboarding ordinance states: “No person shall course, slide down, across, in and along any street or sidewalk or public parking lot of the city upon any board jumper, skateboard or otherwise, unless such street, way or parking lot has been designated for such purposes by the Police Chief.”

In other words, the Kennebec Police Chief is the king of skateboarding. This ordinance is up for review tomorrow night at the Kennebec City Council meeting and hopefully things are going to change.
