Struggling international resort owner Intrawest has sold two French resorts we’ve never heard of, according to a story on Metronews.ca.
Vancouver-based Intrawest said it has agreed to sell the lodging and commercial operations at Arc 1950 Resort in Savoie and the Flaine Montsoleil Resort in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps. . . The price was not disclosed.
We’re going to go ahead and guess that this won’t be the last asset Intrawest sells in coming months.
On his blog The Adventure Life Steve Casimiro, the former editor of Powder magazine and now West Coast Editor of National Geographic Adventure, has written an essay on how wonderful it is that so many people are out in the line up on $100 Costco surfboards.
Now, for a fraction of what you’d spend sending your kid to a surfing camp, you can have a board on call. Because they’re cheap and ultra-durable, you don’t have to worry about them getting lost, stolen, or damaged (my sister in law lost hers off the roof of her car on the freeway—it didn’t get a scratch). Even for adults, too, the Costco board is a great option for learning–though not a true longboard, it’s plenty long enough to get you in and on a wave. And if you discover surfing isn’t your thing, so what–it’s only a hundred bucks.

The body of a skateboarder Walker Howell Morris, 20, who died of blunt force trauma after hitting a tree while longboarding after midnight on Missoula, Montana’s Sawmill Gulch Road was found by friends on the side of the road two days later, according to a story on Missoulian.com.
The friends last saw Morris at around midnight on Aug. 1, and his father filed a missing person’s report on Saturday when his son never arrived at a wedding he planned to attend. . . The friend told authorities that they had been drinking beers at his house Friday night and decided to go longboarding; before parting ways, Morris told his friends that he intended to skateboard home.
This morning (August 5, 2009) a shark was sighted at Australia’s Bells Beach “chasing another surfer in waters close to shore,” according to a story in the Geelong Advertiser.
Pete, who was surfing at the famous break . . .said many surfers started yelling to clear the water after the shark was sighted. No-one was injured. . . .About 20 minutes after the sighting Pete said some surfers were returning to the water.

After fire crews had the first fire 100 percent contained, another five-hectare fire sparked up in the Ruby Bowl on August 3, 2009.
A 20-person crew has water on-site and is working to establish a guard on the west flank of the fire. . . Throughout the day there may be air support supplied to the ground crew should it be required. . . The Ruby Bowl terrain is very rocky, with minimal alpine vegetation and is isolated from the more commonly accessed portions of Blackcomb Mountain.

Chris Cutri is an assistant professor in the communications department of Brigham Young University. That may seem like a strange place to make surf films, but being a little land-locked hasn’t stopped Cutri from turning out two solid surf films. His latest, Hanging Five, is showing Wednesday August 5, 2009 at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas, California. Chris says:
I find that I’m interested in the peripheral elements of the surf culture. My second surf doc, Hanging Five follows five extremely talented artists and examines their work. It also tries to discover why the surf culture produces and supports the arts. The artists: Andy Davis, Tyler Warren, Julie Goldstein, Wolfgang Bloch, and Alex Knost.
Two snowboarders, one “understood to be Winter Olympics double medallist” and another an Olympic hopeful are scheduled to appear in court next week in Wanaka New Zealand on charges of possessing the weed, according to a story in The Southland Times.
The pair, aged 26 and 21, were arrested in Wanaka on Saturday night after being stopped for random roadside breath testing. . . Sergeant Paul Crosswell, of Wanaka, said the pair were allegedly caught with “not an insignificant amount” of cannabis in their car. . . They will appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.
According to the New Zealand Herald “The maximum penalty for a conviction for possession of marijuana is three months’ jail and/or a NZ$500 fine (US$330),” or about the same fine as running a red light in LA. . . now let’s see. . . who is 26, American, and has two Olympic medals. . .
