NYT Rehashes Slater Tour Story

by The Editors on September 18, 2009

Surfinga600

The New York Times action scribe Matt Higgins has dropped in on the “Slater tour” story with a round up of whatever everyone else is saying (and we’ve all heard) spiced up with some quotes from ESPN’s Chris Stiepock and Vans’ Doug Palidini.

“There’s little doubt in most surfers’ minds that Kelly Slater is the best surfer who’s ever lived,” said Doug Palladini, vice president of marketing for Vans and president of the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association, an industry trade group. “So there’s no doubt he brings massive credibility to anything he wants to be a part of. The fact that he’s allowed his name and his agent to be associated with this has for sure made people sit up and listen more.”

For his part Champions Surf Tour’s Terry Hardy is keeping his lips zipped. In other words, no news here.

This ThirtyTwo/StepChild Premiere Didn’t Suck

by The Editors on September 18, 2009

This Video Sucks’ tripod of homies: Joe Sexton, Simon Chamberlain, and JP Walker.

Last night (Thursday, September 17, 2009) ThirtyTwo invited the shred media up for a big This Video Sucks premiere party. They opened the doors to the Sole Technology company store at 5 PM and let everyone do a little shopping for new snow boots and brand spankin’ new ThirtyTwo outerwear.

After that it was a private skate Session with the ThirtyTwo team, followed by a taco fiesta, and an unlimited stream of PBR’s in the back lot, and an outdoor screening of Defective Films’ ThrityTwo/Step Child joint This Video Sucks featuring JP Walker, Simon Chamberlain, Joe Sexton, Markku Koski, Risto Ruokola, Fredu Sorvio, Stian Solberg, Eman Anderson, and Scotty Vine.

By 9:15 PM all the chairs were full and it was standing room only well over 200 people settled in for some shred film. This Video Sucks is a smooth little rail film with friendly banter/shit-talking between the players and a couple big backcountry hucks thrown in for good measure. Joe Sexton took the most grief for his below par sled and ugly helmet combo which made the audience erupt into laughter several times. But the video is more about friends working together to get the job done. When Sexton describes JP Walker, Simon Chamberlain, and himself as a “tripod of homies” he pretty well sums up the flow of the film.

Zumiez Jumps Right On Up

by The Editors on September 18, 2009

Zumiez-NotaglineThis morning, while surveying the action financial landscape from the comfort of our bed we noticed that Zumiez was up nearly 10 percent on morning trading to $16.87. Aside from making us wish we had purchased it at $7, we wondered what the deal was. According to Forbes it was an back-to-school upgrade from Wedbush analyst Betty Chen.

“We believe Zumiez benefited from solid back-to-school selling during the Labor Day weekend and while there may be some deceleration in the latter half of the month, we believe September sales will once again demonstrate an improvement from year-to-date trends,” Wedbush’s Betty Chen wrote in a client note.

We say this all the time, but this news kind of makes us wish we bought industry stock. . .but we don’t.

Free Lunch With Riley & Tony Hawk

by The Editors on September 16, 2009

Riley Hawk doesn’t say a whole lot in this interview. But watching him interact with his dad is classic. Best thing about having Tony Hawk for a dad? “He understands what I’m talking about.”
