The Rip Curl Pro Search from Peniche, Portugal has kicked off with two straight lay days thanks to no swell and “stormy seas and heavy rain” according to the ASP press office.
“We’re obviously off this morning with victory-at-sea conditions and heavy winds,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “The winds are heavy out of the Southwest at the moment that are projected to go heavy Northwest by 10am so it is onshore all day. This is the supposed to be the worst day for weather so we’ll be back in 8am tomorrow morning to reassess conditions.”

According to Kilwag, one of our favorite skate blogs Skate And Annoy has been hit by a denial of service attack and he’s been wrangling it for a couple days now. Here’s is explanation for the sites current retro WordPress graphics:
My service provider thinks the site has suddenly and instantly become mega popular, thus causing server overload due to the high amount of php in use on the site. I’m more inclined to believe we are experiencing a Denial of Service attack – some individual or parties trying to overload the server and make it unavailable for viewing.
What does this mean for fans of the site? “It means you should get back to work! I’m working on the problem in conjunction with the ISP,” Kilwag says. We wish him luck. . .

A 15-year-old North Carolina surfer died in the Outer Banks on Friday when his leash became tangled in the pilings of the Avon Fishing pier according to a story in the Star-News of Wilmington.
The teenage boy, Craig Marshall (pictured on the left), a student at Topsail High School in Hampstead, was surfing with a group of eight teenagers on Hatteras Island when the current dragged him into Avon Fishing Pier sometime around 11:30 a.m., said Bob Helle, the assistant chief with the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad.
Our thoughts are with Marshall’s family and friends.

Let’s just put it this way: this is the second and last time we’re missing opening day at Mammoth. Thankfully, Ashbury’s Lance Michael Hakker got it all down on the web.
Big Mountain Mike and I roll up around 9:30am and the parking was the craziest I’ve ever seen it on opening day. And we’ve been going to Mammoth’s opener for 10 years or more.
How’s that for a crowd? Just think what free tickets do for on-hill food sales and Mammoth lodging? We think the kids should ride free all the time. Don’t you?
For the rest of the photos click the link. . . or for his real work check Lance’s story on SnowboarderMag.com.

For as much grief as we’ve given print magazines recently there is no arguing with the legacy that is Surfer Magazine.
When John Severson launched his magazine in 1960 (as a program for his movie Surf Fever) he basically created the action sports magazine genre and all of us have been living in his shadow ever since. Shockingly, that was 50 years ago.
To celebrate this historic milestone in surfing and media, the surf world is getting together in Oceanside, California on November 21, 2009 for the Surfer Magazine 50 Year Anniversary Tribune.
The Surfer Magazine 50 Year Anniversary Tribute will bring together generations of Surfer Magazine editors, publishers, photographers, and surf pros presenting its story in a varieity of media showcasing the rich history of the magazine and the sport.
The event begins at 8 PM Saturday, Nov. 21th at the Grace Theater, Oceanside. Tickets are $25 for members $35 for non-members. But the real party will be the exclusive VIP reception at the California Surf Museum starting at 6 PM. Click the link for all the details.

While the talent pool of riders who compete on the US Grand Prix Tour in Olympic off years may not be a deep as many would expect, it is nice to see that there is a tour for those who don’t feel ready for the Grand Prix just yet. It’s called the Revolution Tour and it is in it’s sixth year.
“The Revolution Tour is entering its sixth year and we are absolutely stoked for another great season,” U.S. Snowboarding Program Manager Abbi Nyberg said. “The Tour has grown so much over the past few years it has been great to see athletes progress from the Revolution Tour and have success at the Grand Prix, US Open, other major events.”
The tour begins January 14, 2009 at Mount Snow, Vermont. Follow the jump for all the details.

Normally, we make fun of grown men who wait overnight out front of HUF for some new shoe. But those are Nikes. HUF’s latest is a Vans Old Skool and that’s a completely different story.
The Vans Old Skool by HUF is constructed with a canvas upper and full grain leather heelcup. Featuring a siped outsole, custom printed triangle pattern on the midsole and custom woven labels & embroidery, the Vans Old Skool by HUF is available in black, navy and cardinal red and sells for $85.
Might have to break down and actually buy a pair of these.

Looks like Burnside has claimed one more victim. Looks like the FJ Cruiser locked up on a Smith. Wasn’t the first, won’t be the last.

Opening day for the new shred season doesn’t get any better than this. With 20-30 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours Mammoth Mountain is ready to blow the doors off on the 2009-2010 season with free lift tickets on Friday October 16, 2009 (according to @mammothmountain).
As if we needed any more excuses to charge the 395. Looks like it’s time to call in sick.
