We’ve always wondered where all the Quiksilver and Roxy overstock goes. And now we know at least part of the story. Some of it ends up in the California Central Valley town of Visalia, according to a story in the Visalia Times Delta.
Visalia school psychologist Ray Miller has been helping students put clothes on their backs and shoes on their feet for more than a year. . . Miller, who had been going to Southern California to get clothes from Quiksilver’s warehouse at a discounted price, learned recently that the retailer would donate eight pallets full of shirts, shorts, pillows and accessories for students.
It’s nice that $152,000 worth of unwanted clothes could find a good home, no?
Erudite skate blogger Boil The Ocean is proving once again that he has watched (and thought seriously about) way, way too many skateboard videos as he counts down the 40 most skateboarding videos of the past decade. While most skaters would be hard pressed to even name 40 skate videos from the last 10 years Boil The Ocean kicks down otaku level knowledge of these videos in a way that suggests he’s watched them all hundreds of times.
A general disclaimer about the list to follow ought to start with noting that most lists of this sort are pretty much bullshit anyway, designed to ignite pointless debate and sell women’s health magazines or ad spots on VH1, and this one may not be much different really. However, given that this is an internet blog site, and the end of a decade is approaching, fate holds that a list must be made.
Take a walk down memory lane and argue along the way: 40-31, 30-21, 20-11, and 10-1.
We’ve occasionally followed the story of surfing physicist Garrett Lisi and the unification theory he calls The Theory of Everything. Some say it is genius, others claim that it is purely junk science from a surfer who is good at math. We have no idea. . . but it looks pretty cool. Doesn’t it?
An unnamed 18-year-old surfer was hit by a 4-foot shark while surfing near News Journal this afternoon according to a story in the News Journal.
The 18-year-old man, who was not identified by the Volusia County Beach Patrol, suffered only minor injuries, including a bump on the shin where the shark hit him and lacerations to the back of the calf and the front of the shin.
He was one of 300 surfers in the water. This is the eighth shark attack of the year.
I’ve never been a fan of the “b-word” and I’ve openly warred against it ever since the term first crept into the global vocabulary. Yet here I am now, embracing it like a cheap whore. . . I think after the publication of both Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art and The Disposable Skateboard Bible, I’ve exhausted my ability to squeeze books out of this obsessive/compulsive fascination of mine. So this is the next best way for a junkie like me to keep scratching the itch.
The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing will this year award a prize purse of $1 million. But don’t get too excited. It’s not a winner take all. It’s just the total prize money of the six contests (three mens, three womens) all added up, according to a story in the Honolulu Advertiser.
The men’s Triple Crown will feature events at Hale’iwa Ali’i Beach, Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline. The women’s Triple Crown will feature events at Hale’iwa Ali’i Beach, Sunset Beach and Honolua Bay, Maui. . . The six contests will award a total of $875,000 in prize money.
But then Vans threw in another $175,000 to knock it right over the top. Triple Crown organizer Randy Rarick is apparently amazed:
“It really is amazing, considering we don’t have a gate for paid attendance to help bring in money,” Rarick said. “It’s one of the better shows on earth and people get to watch for free. That’s why it’s nice to see the surfers get rewarded like this.”
Maybe someday the winner of Pipeline will take home a cool million all by themselves. We can hope. Stay tuned to Triplecrownofsurfing.com for all the action. It all starts tomorrow with the Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009 from Haleiwa.
Tony Hawk’s personal ramp was set on top of one of the resort’s swimming pools, and a family-centric action-sports carnival filled the surrounding area with games, food, activities, a special musical performance by Rancid, and a Vert Demo with Tony and skaters Andy Macdonald, Bucky Lasek, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins, and Kevin Staab, plus BMX pros Jamie Bestwick, Simon Tabron, and Dennis McCoy. . . Several celebrities attended, including Andre Agassi, Erik Estrada, BMX legend Mat Hoffman, T.J. Lavin, Holly Madison, Sal Masekela, Aubrey O’Day, UFC fighters Chuck Liddell, Frank Mir and Gray Maynard and UFC President Dana White.
