Bonnier Buys A Book Publisher

by The Editors on December 10, 2009

Bonnier Corp Logo-1The dying days of print have been a boon for TransWorld Media’s parent company Bonnier Corp. as they apparently see bargains everywhere.

Most recently the company has purchased Weldon Owen, an Australia publisher of “illustrated reference, lifestyle, and educational books,” according to a story on Foliomag.com.

Bonnier said adding Weldon Owen will allow the company to expand its existing magazine brands and content into book publishing projects. The company said it is considering bookazines, collectible yearbooks and other book products for sale on newsstands and online.

They’re obviously not letting anything get in the way of their quest for print domination.

etnies Holiday Festival 2009

by The Editors on December 9, 2009

120909 4
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove on their way in to the park.

For each of the past six years Sole Technology owner Pierre André Senizergues has made holiday wishes come true for 500 kids from Southern California’s Boys & Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations (seven in total) by inviting them to the etnies Skateboard Park in Lake Forest for a holiday party. At the party each of them will get a free pair of new shoes in a box, wrapped as a present.

When we arrived in the parking lot behind the etnies building two bus loads of kids from Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove were lining up to walk down to the park. They were buzzing with energy, each kid smiling like they were being tickled. It was kind of crazy.

From the upper lot the skatepark looked more like a carnival. A huge bouncy bounce covered the lawn just outside the park. Inside the fence some kids were getting their pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus while others waited at the table to pick up their pair of shoes. Many dropped to the ground after getting their present and ripped into the packages to get their new shoes on as soon as possible. Others carried them out still wrapped perfectly for Christmas.

Getting Deeper With Jeremy Jones

by The Editors on December 9, 2009

Jeremy Jones discusses his idea behind Deeper, a snowboard film two years in the making. And yes, we’re sure seeing Deeper will make us feel a little less macho while making resort laps through the park. Luckily, the movie doesn’t come out until the fall of 2010 so we an entire season to nut up and ride like men.

Schoenfeld Gives Vendors One Hour Massage

by The Editors on December 9, 2009

240 ErgarytifftalkledeYesterday, at the surfy-swank Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach PacSun’s CEO Gary Schoenfeld reportedly filled his suppliers ears with words of “belief and passion for action sports brands” like a drowning man espousing the virtues of life rafts.

Okay, we made that last part up. We weren’t there. But luckily, Shop-eat-surf.com‘s Tiffany Montgomery had a front row seat and was kind enough to post a wonderful slideshow filled with photos of people so desperately hoping to sell more screen-printed T-shirts in America’s malls that they were willing to sit in a small room and listen to Mr. Schoenfeld for an entire hour.

Ring Wraiths Descend on Copper Mountain

by The Editors on December 9, 2009

10 Grandprix GenericTomorrow (December 10, 2009), on the snowy slopes of the recently sold Copper Mountain Resort in the heart of Summit County Colorado, the big show kicks off with women’s halfpipe qualifiers.

As never before snowboarders are well aware (thank you Shaun White) of what the Olympics can mean for fame, fortune, and everything that goes with it. And for United States halfpipe riders there’s only one way to get into the rings: The US Snowboard Grand Prix.

Top halfpipe riders will get five chances to show their skills: one at Copper Mountain this weekend, two at Mammoth January 4-10, 2010, and the final two at Park City January 20-23, 2010 (click resort names for event info). Then the team is chosen and it’s on to Vancouver.

Greg Long Takes The Eddie

by The Editors on December 9, 2009

Greg Win

For most of the day we all thought Kelly Slater was going to walk away with a win on a board he claimed he hadn’t surfed since “Bruce won it” in 2004, the last time The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau was held. Then, in the final heat of the day, San Clemente, California’s Greg Long charged through with all four of his high scoring waves including a perfect 100.

“I’m so happy just to be here, invited into the biggest event of big waves in the world with all my heroes, I’m so excited,” said Long. . . “It’s a dream come true for me. Riding big waves is my passion and I’ve been following The Eddie since I knew exactly what it was, I was probably 12-years-old just getting into surfing. Since then, I’ve had every single poster from Brock Little to Bruce Irons on my wall. I look to those guys for inspiration and to be standing up here with Sunny (Garcia) and Kelly Slater is a dream come true for me. I never would have thought that this is my first year surfing the event and to come away with a victory is really a childhood dream become real.”

Maybe it is good to go last at Waimea. . . follow the jump for the ASP press release.
