The snowboarder who died at Killington Resort on Thursday, December 24, 2009 was Alex Westphal, 20, a sophomore at Hofstra University, according to a story on WPIX.com.
Just minutes minutes before his death, Westphal took a cell phone picture at 11:54 a.m. of the mountains and sent it to his parents, who were cross-country skiing. . . . He then began his decent down the resort’s expert slope and apparently hit an object like a pole or sign post. . . Vermont State Police Detective Sam Capogrossi says though the student from Cheshire, Conn. was wearing his helmet, he sustained massive internal injuries.
Westphal was an only child. Our heartfelt sympathies are with his parents, Ryan and Ann.
This beach house in the Dominican Republic designed by Spanish architecture firm A-cero appears to have more skateable surfaces that your average skatepark.
. . . stunning housing project in La Romana (Dominican Republic) built entirely with the indigenous stone of Coralline that really prospers with the abundance of sunshine. The two blocks that shoot up like waves are fantastic and provide vertical covering. They also look like something Tony Hawk might dream up for his beach house.
Tagged Great Whites in Australia are now set up to automatically send text messages to lifeguards and emergency personnel, according to a story in The Daily Mail.
As the man-eating predators approach shallower waters, the signal they emit will be picked up by a satellite receiver. Minutes later, a text message or email is sent out to scientists, wildlife officials and lifeguards. . . The tracking system set up around Perth in Western Australia is revolutionary because it will track the sharks in ‘real time’, said Rory McAuley a senior scientist with the West Australian Department of Fisheries.
Hopefully, they’re just remove one link for the communication chain and allow surfers to sign up for the messages themselves.
The Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour is calling the 4Star 8th Red Bull Nanshan Open ” the largest event on Asian soil this season.” We’re not exactly sure what that means, but for snowboarders who aren’t on the hunt for a spot on the US Olympic halfpipe team the $25,000 prize purse and up to 500 Swatch TTR ranking points are probably worth a trip to China on the January 9-10, 2010.
With all the domain mistakes we’ve made over the years we’d be the last ones to poke fun at someone forgetting to renew their domain names. That said, it appears that Bryce Kanights and the crew at Skatedaily.netare apparently havingsome issues with Network Solutions. Here’s what Bryce says:
Yeah, the domain registration had expired without a notice. A bit odd, but, the site should be up and online within the hour. Fingers crossed.
We know the feeling. It’s always funny to see what the domain registrars put up when a site is down. But a skier for Skatedaily.net?
Skateistan, the organization that teaches Afghan young people through skateboarding has open its first skateboard park and school on Tuesday December 29, 2009, according to a story in The National Post.
“Skateistan” started two years ago in a dried-up fountain in the heart of the Afghan capital, when two Australians with three skateboards started teaching a small group of fascinated kids. . . Now dozens of boys and girls from across all social classes can mix in a giant indoor park that looks like a cross between a military hangar and an urban hangout, festooned with the names of fashionable skating brands that have sponsored the park.
It is amazing what can be done with some skateboards and a dream. For more on the story click here.
Aspen still draws the celebrities for Christmas. If it’s not Charlie Sheen getting arrested for allegedly swinging a knife around the house, it’s country singer LeAnn Rimes snowboarding with her boyfriend Eddie Cibrian, according to JustJared.com.
Eddie, 36, and LeAnn, 27, are spending more time together out in public after a divorce settlement was reached with LeAnn’s ex-husband, Dean Sheremet. The divorce will officially occur as of June 19, 2010.
That is so good to hear. . . Snowboarding needs more rich divorcees.
