Whistler Discounts IPO Offering Again

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Whistler LogoWhistler Blackcomb Resort’s planned IPO doesn’t seem to be offering up much help lately. Fortress Investment Group LLC cut the offered share price for a second time in one week, according to a story on Bloomberg.

Whistler Blackcomb aims to sell shares for C$12 each, with a dividend yield of 8.12 percent, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The company previously cut its price range from C$14 to C$15 a share down to C$12.50 and C$13 apiece.

Not really sure lowering the price on buying into a debt-ridden resort will make it look any more attractive, but what else can they do?

Chris Cole’s New Sock Stance

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Chriscole Stance

Stance’s Ryan Kingman just let us know that Chris Cole in now official wearing the socks.

Cole’s achievements in skateboarding defy description. Everyone is well aware of what a beast he is on his board and what he’s capable of. With that said, we won’t bother trying to envelop his amazing list of accomplishments here as the sheer volume spoken by Cole’s decision to be part of Stance is best left as it is. Well done is better than well said.

Can’t really argue with that.

Corporate Thoughts From Derek Hynd

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Derek-2Mary Mills interviews Derek Hynd for Liquid Salt Mag and asks the finless innovator who he thinks is “shaping the path for surfing today.” His response:

Can’t say anyone is as individuals. The corporation shapes surfing. The corporation pays for performance. The corporation pushes the message. The corporation wins over those who buy the line. Any one who surfs for themselves, rides boards from their own space, distances themselves from as much bullshit as is possible is doing a beautiful job.

Mr. Hynd is certainly doing it beautifully. Read the rest of the interview.

Sheckler’s Truck Star of Police Shootout

by The Editors on November 1, 2010

ShecklesRyan Sheckler’s truck (but maybe not Ryan) was involved in an “intense midnight” shootout on Friday night, according to TMZ.

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a call about a traffic collision late Friday night involving a possible drunk driver — but when they showed up, we’re told, the driver motored it away from the scene. . . Law enforcement sources tell us … officers chased the driver down and cornered him on a dead end street — the driver panicked, pulled a U-turn, and gunned it in the cops’ direction … at which point, we’re told, sheriff’s deputies drew their weapons and shot at the truck. . . We’re told the driver — who turned out to be an unidentified minor — wasn’t hit … and gave up immediately after the deputies shot their weapons.

TMZ says the truck was later reported stolen by Sheckler. Hmm. . .

At appoximately 1:30PM (November 1, 2010) the following tweet was sent out on Ryan Sheckler’s official Twitter.

“Wanted to let everyone know Ryan is safe. His vehicle was stolen from his house, located in a secured gated community Friday night. Ryan is no way involved in this incident nor has any connection to the suspect. Ryan thanks his friends and fans for the concern.”- Representative of Ryan Sheckler at Wasserman Media Group

That makes a us feel much better.

Globe Actually Turns A Profit

by The Editors on November 1, 2010

Globe LogoFor the first time in four years Globe International (parent of Dwindle Distribution) has turned a profit. And, according to a story in The Australian, it is due to a “balanced approach.”

While in previous years Hill has issued bullish assessments of the outlook only to have them fail to materialise, he’s now playing it safe. He talks only of stabilising revenues and growing through market share expansion. . . “We have some positive signs in the business at the moment but markets are also erratic, so we’re being cautious both on the outlook and how we manage the business,” he tells The Australian.

Looks like the “back-to-basics” plan is working.

Tony Hawk Talks Business Again

by The Editors on November 1, 2010

Tony-Hawk-1Blackbook Magazine interviews Tony Hawk on the business side of skateboarding and discovers that like for most of us hardest part of Tony’s job is managing his time.

Prioritizing my time is definitely the hardest. Just in terms of how much time I need to devote to a project, or traveling, or promoting and trying to maintain a stable family life as well.

We still don’t know how he does it.
