Kassia Meador coming up for air while plunging Lindsay Lohan into another Roxy wave at Malibu. We’re kind of glad there is no audio on this photo because that “Oh, my gawd” look on Lindsay’s face would be painful to hear, we’re sure.

Nixon’s Heaviest Teahupoo Wave Watch

by The Editors on August 16, 2011

Wta Tahiti Large Web

Seems like these Nixon WTA watches are getting better and better. For intance, this Teahupoo Magnacon SS watch that goes to the surfer who catches the heaviest wave during the Billabong Pro Teahupoo is worth a reported $10,000 and it features the following:

. . . a custom engraved caseback, a Swiss tide movement, 60 rubies around the bezel, four two-millimeter decorative black diamonds on the dial, and 24 black diamonds on the dial for hour indices.

There are probably people off the street who would paddle out at chopes for a watch like that. And what a great game show that would make. [click to continue…]

Quiksilver Up 3 Percent On Analyst Upgrade

by The Editors on August 16, 2011

Quik Logo10It’s nice to occasionally report good news from the action stock market and yesterday (August 15, 2011), after FBR Capital Markets & Co.’s Eric Tracy said that Quik was making strides with it’s balance sheet, the stock rocketed up three percent, according to a story on Bloomberg.

“Balance sheet improvements are a testament to a management team focused on enhancing its financial flexibility for longer-term growth, and as of the second quarter, forward orders from retail partners in the Americas and Europe, inclusive of price increases, are up year-over-year across brands,” Tracy wrote.

It’s down a little today, but maybe that can be seen as an opportunity. . .

Businessweek Goes Dumpster Diving

by The Editors on August 16, 2011

Pop06 Surf34 01B 600Burton’s surf division (Channel Islands Surfboards) got a write-up in Businessweek thanks to Dane Reynolds best-selling surfboard shape the Dumpster Diver.

What Reynolds really wanted was to take a standard, lance-like shortboard, cut out the midsection, squash the nose and the tail together, and fatten it up. . . He fished a foam scrap out of a trash bin, and the two repaired to the shaping room. As Smith tells it, the whole time the shaper was planing the foam, he was muttering, “Dude, this is ugly. This is really, really ugly.”

For those who may have thought Dane is getting paid a little too well to be dropping out of J-Bay and Teahupo’o, it should be mentioned that according to Businessweek his ugly boards now account for 15 percent of Channel Islands’ total board sales.

Shaun White Moves To Northstar-At-Tahoe

by The Editors on August 16, 2011

Pr Shaun 3We’ve never really understood resort sponsorships. Does actually riding at the resort have something to do with an athlete’s endorsement? For instance, until last week we expected golfer Tiger Woods to actually wear a TAG Heuer. And, until this year, we figured Shaun White actually drank Red Bull occasionally and rode at Park City.

So when we saw that Shaun’s new “home mountain and primary training resort” is now Northstar-at-Tahoe, we wondered if this means he’ll have to ride there. Sounds like he might:

“This feels like a homecoming because I have spent so much time riding at most of Vail Resorts’ mountains,” said White. “With Northstar as my home mountain, I now have the ideal place to train and continue to grow as an athlete and I am looking forward to all the possibilities this partnership brings.”

As part of this deal Vail Resorts (the owner of Northstar-At-Tahoe) will donate $5 of every Epic Season Pass sold to Shaun’s chosen charity St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Follow the jump for more details or click here. [click to continue…]

The Infamous Wicklund Films

by The Editors on August 16, 2011

In this time of fall snowboard movie premieres it’s good to look back and remember where it all came from. This film of Gunnar Burgson and Vern Wicklund reportedly using their new snow sliding invention in the early 1940s proves that the basics of sliding on snow really haven’t changed all that much in the last 70 years.
